It's stats are actually good. It just doesn't "do" anything. It's just a generic special attacking Fire and Psychic type of which there is no lack of either and as far as I can think of there's no pressing need for the type combination which isnt very great without some sort of niche to back it up. It just has nearly nothing of relevance to distinguish it. It's ability could have if its movepool couldn't but lol

It's not like I hate it, it's just my least favorite starter and a Pokémon I would never consider using, mainly because I don't like it's design. I think ot looks like a fakemon, but not any fakemon, I mean, like one of those fakes people would have drawn back in 2006-2009. I've also readed posts in this board that says it looks fake-tier, so I guess it's not just me. Not that fakemons are all bad, some are really good and would look good as real Pokémon, but when a Pokémon does look like a fakemon it's just not okay.

I think the idea with Greninja is that it's a ninja so it uses Protean to blend in. I also kind of thoughtm aybe it was based on some kind of frog that can camoflage too but I never bothered to find out. It would have suit Delphox mechanically too though. I have no idea why they gave it Magician.

It is likely because of a few reasons

Not what people expected, a lot of fan art depicted Fennekin evolving into something that looks more like Ninetales, a quadrupedal psychic fox that was related to all of those myths about magical foxes or some shit

The in game model is terrible, a lot of people's first impression of it was bad, not to mention its glaring ear hair and odd triangular shape.

It's by far the weakest of the Kalos starters. Greninja gets a broken as fuck ability, Chesnaught gets a decent ability that can shut down a few mons and Delphox gets a horrendous ability that does jackshit and since gamefreak are the geniuses that they are they decided to give a fucking frog a better movepool than a magician, Delphox can't even learn thunderbolt, it's pathetic.

Hopefully they will fix it by giving it a better ability and movepool in gen 7, but considering they didn't fix Meganium after 4 generations I highly doubt it.

All of them have ear hair and unless you can epxlain what makes this one's so egregiously bad compared to the others i'm gonna have to dismiss that

Why is this odd or even inherently bad? Being "triangular shaped" makes sense with what it's depicting. A humanoid fox wearing a robe. Robes already give a triangular silhouette. Braixen already had a triangular silhouette with just its skirt. And being conical isn't somehow an inherently bad trait unless a cone killed your parents or something.

I can't properly explain, its not a problem with the design but the in game model, it looks odd and makes it shape and ear hair stand out, it looks way better in the official art.
