But it's still interesting to think about. I think learning 8 moves is overkill, but allowing Pokemon to know five moves might freshen up the metagame, though it would probably only help make the most OP Pokemon even more broken.

It would be better.

Right now there are 721 pokemon, plus whatever Sun and Moon brings.
A pokemon may have either one or two types. With the current 18 types system, there are 324 possible ways to assign types to pokemon.
Add to that the Special and Physical split, and the combination of 621 Moves there exist, and the answer is obvious.
Adding more moves would not fuck up the game at all. It would only help the game grow, as more options become available. An alternative would be adding more pokemon slots. Either of these would improve the game.

I think that a good improvement to the mega system would be that mega stones are no longer required to mega evolve (so you don't have to find mega stones anymore) and pokemon can use items before mega evolving. However, they do not benefit from their items when mega evolved.

This could open up for interesting plays where a pokemon eats a berry and then mega evolves.

2 extra slots is kind of overkill, allowing for all sorts of crazy shit (like adding Rest+Sleep Talk to any set that allows it). I don't think 5 Moves would have the same effect, though it would still be quite drastic.
