Find out what's legal at your tournament (Is this an official tournament or just a local thing? Are legendaries banned? Are they using Smogon rules?) and use the cheapest, cuntiest shit available according to Smogon's tier lists.
Learn about EVs and IVs if you haven't already. Both of those were made so much more accessible in gen 6, so there's no excuse to ignore them, and they really do matter.
When you come up with an idea for a team, put it together in Showdown and see how it does. Theory is one thing; execution is another.
