We always discuss Gen VI when it comes to discussing animations,

I think for the most part, they dropped the ball with gen 5 sprites for pokemon introduced in that gen.

If you compare snivy to all of the other grass starter sprites in gen 5, snivy looks like it has the least detail put into it. there's not as much shading and it looks more 2d than the rest, almost like a moving sticker. the other ones have this 2d/3d mesh to them that looks better imo. its ironic because you think theyd put the most effort into making the gen's featured mons look the best

Unova's sprites are simple because they were made with actual animation in mind but then they lazed out and just tweened old sprites for most of the old ones

Emolga has a fantastic sprite and my go to for comparing Gen V and VI animations

And Gen VI has some individual awesome (idle) animations too, like Torchic, ignoring other animations. You really can't pull out one to compare the lot.
