I've been wanting something like this for a while so I'd welcome it.

Each gym now has a battle gimmick.

First gym is obsessed with having maximum coverage moves, almost every pokemon has hidden power.
Another gym has baton pass on almost every pokemon.
Another gym is a stall team.
Entry hazards and phasing.
Hyper offense team.
Another has risky moves like dynamic punch, stone edge, even gift.

Actually this doesn't work that well. It would be great for the elite four though.

This would actually be really cool. It would make gym battles more than just "spam super effective move to win" and provide more challenge. It would also make the gyms more memorable as "the zoo gym" and "The construction site gym" are easier to remember than Electric gym #7.

I think it would be fun. Help many people to know the reason for existence of many Pokemon, or, at least, to give them a meaning. Moreover, the battles maybe more difficult, not only a "Water gun against your three poorly leveled Geodude".

By the way, I'd love to see a ruin maniac leader with archaeological Pokemon. Each has a different typing but would be awesome see all of them in the same team. Not to mention a possible new Tiki Pokemon in SM.

I would prefer a mix, e.g themes like aquatic, where they would have mostly water types but also pokemon like inkay that are sea creatures but don't have a water typing, or volcanic where they have a mix of fire/rock/ground

Gym leaders are supposed to be masters specializing in a certain type. If they're just a person with a specific occupation/theme with a team centred around it, regardless of type, that doesn't really make them any different from the various trainer classes

Gyms base on egg groups. Besides undiscovered and ditto, there are 13 groups, which is just enough for 8 gyms + e4 + champ. Each gym is still thematically consistent, with many being close to monotype, but there is still room for more variety.

I always wanted to be a gym leader, and I've always thought monotype teams are stupid. Where is the challenge? My theme is bears: Ursaring, Beartic, Pangoro and Snorlax if hes allowed since he's not technically a bear.
