The pokeball works because if the design were any more complex it wouldn't pass as something the player could confuse for a pokeball. The eggs (seeds) are fine. If it were designed now they would probably have cutesy eyes with no cracks even drawn on them.

I see your point on electrode. A lot of the newer designs for Pokemon are a lot cooler than the older generations. For example, if you were to ask any kid, which Pokemon is cooler, dragonite or hydreigon? Probably 7 times out of ten people would say hydreigon. A lot of these are a matter of opinion so I can't speak for anyone. Ditto is probably meant to be blank because it can transform into something incredibly detailed, something like a blank canvas or some shizz like that.
