The japanese names got leaked and context clues were used

The original Roothoot post was beforehand, but copyrights revealed the starter names and the most obvious interpretation of "Mokuroh" was a portmanteau of tree and owl

And Poplio was like "Ashimaru" or some shit which was seal and marine or some bull.

Wood Owl is more interesting though, since currently Rowlet looks kinda like a budding dicot seed. Maybe he'll evolve into a big ass tree at some point.
