I just restarted OR earlier too. I did a mono-type challenge. You should too. My current team is: Pupitar (from trade), Probopass, Lilleep and Solrock. I have my Latios as the Surf/Fly slave until I get Corsola & Archeops before the Pokemon League.
If you want a challenge, go for a difficult type to handle. :) I guess it can be original in another angle lol

When I played I used Wigglytuff, Luvdisc (it was shiny too!), Magcargo, Zangoose, Sceptile and Dusclops.
I basically chose Pokemon I had interest in (but never used) and tried to avoid early route or gift pokemon.
I would also try not using your starter. That might spice it up a bit, idk.

Dexnav gives decent variety if you use it enough. That's how I got a lot of my team members.
