How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games)
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter Standard/Expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.
>if you don't know what deck you want to build yet, see http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/forum/tcg-competitive-play.156/ or check out tournament results for a list of viable decks http://www.pokemon.com/us/play-pokemon/state-province-championships-2016/decks/week-four/

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. Top Cut & other big trading companies will typically overprice cards, expect to get lower

My top 3 favs are emloleon luxray and arcanine.
Empoleon and luxray have aome cool breaks but neither are very good. Arcanine has had nothing cool in years.

Ability: Steam Up
Once during your turn (before your attack), you may discard 1 Fire Energy card from your hand. If you do, during this turn, the attacks of your Basic Fire Pokemon do 30 more damage to your opponent’s Active Pokemon.

Besides the obvious Torchic abuse, what other basic fire pokemon could make use of this amazing ability?
>>
I was asleep about an hour before the reveals, so I don't know if anyone answered me.

Do the EX cards on the versus reward ladders become usable? I have the Darkrai and Kyurem EX, but when I try to make a deck with them, they won't appear when I try to add them. Is this a bug?
>>
>>26575447
Charizard ex possibly to boost it to 60. Then you grab a discarded energy so it ramps itself, seems cute.
>>
I will never win a legacy tournament.
>>
>>26574684
Maractus unsurprisingly has no good cards. Gardevoir has some pretty cool ones though including the only real heavy hitter in the fairy type.
>>
>>26575447
We talked a shitload about this back when it was revealed, check the archives.

tl;dr it's an extremely good card that's probably going to be tiered, either on its own, alongside the fire-type Yveltal+1, or at the very least teched into Entei/Charizard or Flareon.

But it really depends on what this rotation is going to be.

Hey guys i just got into the tcg about the time the charizard generations box came out and now im getting in to playing a little more seriously. Moved from casual decks with 25 pokemon to decent decks.

So I've made this deck because i really like sylveon and wanted to make a deck featuring her, and I'd like your guys feedback on it.

I know im missing vs seekers and should prolly cut the 2 bands for 2 more belts. And shaymins ofc...
But lemme know
>>
>>26580311
I'm a bit out of the loop with the tcg, but isn't it lacking the Sycamores? Also, last time I checked, 4 Xerneas wasn't enough for 2 Brigettes.

>>26580311
Messy. Your Pokemon lineup isn't focused enough; you should either actually focus on Sylveon EX by maxing it out, or gear it to be more of a Gardevoir deck. Your trainer lineup is weird, too. Brigette doesn't make sense here, Max Potion isn't a good card without Aromatisse, Skyla isn't picking up anything in particular, Teammates is out of place in a primarily-EX deck, you only have one Spirit Link, and there's not a Sycamore or VS Seeker in sight. You also have way, way too many energies.

Pic related is a Sylveon deck that won States, and this was before FC so no Fairy Drop. I've played this deck extensively online and it's really solid. Notice the trainers and the more streamlined Pokemon lineup.
>>
>>26575276
This isn't news or some mind-opening discovery. 99% of the time, FAs are better.
>>
>>26578075
>Is it normal to get 2 EX from a single pack?

It was is Legendary Treasures. I can't accurately say if it is for Generations since TPCI sucks little jap penis and didn't release Generations booster boxes.

Recomendations?
Want to build a speed deck that can take on basic mons before they reach break status (scizor line)
If facing EX, sabotage them and/or wreck them with Zoroark.
I am trading for a full art Scizor and Mega this weekend, and Zoroark Break.
I am too lazy to break my currenr deck right now, but this is my planned list:

Scizor Ex 3 or 4
M Scizor 2
Zoroak Break 3-2-2
Jirachi Doom Desire 1

Steel energy 5
Shield Energy 3
Dark Energy 2
Special Dark Energy 1

Reverse Valley- 2

Pokemon Center Lady- 1
Sycamore- 4
Lysandre- 2
Hex Maniac- 1
Ultra Ball- 3
Teammates- 1
FloatStone- 2
Townmap- 1
Vs Seeker- 4
Head Ringer- 1
Target whistle- 1
Revive-1
Acro Bike- 3
>>
>>26580311
This is awful. But that's not unusual since you're new.

First, that's WAY too many energy. This isn't like Magic where 1/3 of your deck is lands. The most energy I've ever seen in a successful competitive deck is 14. How many energy you run depends on the deck. I'd say most decks run between 4 and 10. Fairies w/ Geomancy Xerneas usually runs 10-12, all basic.

Sylveon is a one-of at best. You need a 3-3 line of Gardevoir, plus 3 spirit links.

Teammates is a good card, but not for this deck. You have too many EXes to be running Teammates. That's really only for Night March and Vespiquen decks.

As you said, you need Seekers and Shaymin. In the meantime, a Hoopa is a decent replacement for Shaymin.

You need 4 Ultra Balls, 4 Trainer's Mail, 2-3 Sycamores, and another Fairy Garden. You also need a 2 (or 3)-2 Aromatisse line.

You don't need Diancie, Fairy Drop, and Brigette at all. You only need 1 Skyla.
>>
>>26581020
>Recomendations?

Don't play Scizor.

Why stop at 70. Here's whole 200 damage riding on a coin flip.
>>
>>26581173
Well, the deck literally won on a States level, which is way more than you can say for whatever pre-FC Fairy build you can post.

And Birch wasn't bad, it's just currently outclassed by N. The fact that a majority of States decks ran 1-3 of it, including some Night March builds, is proof of this.
>>
>>26581143
>I am not autsie enough to spend so much cash on Shaymins and try to go to worlds

Not everyone spent $60 on Shaymin. Back when Roaring Skies first dropped, it was $25-30 for a FA.

Also, you don't have to want to go to Worlds to play competitively. I work 12a-9a and 12a-8a Sat/Sun, but I still go to League and play in League Challanges, Cities, and occasionally States and Regionals when I can.

OK thanks a lot guys!
Sycamore and Trainer's mail slipped right by me and after playing with this deck a bit, Bridgette is pretty awful and I'll take youre recommendation of teammates being bad as well.
The max potions and diancies are filler until i get vs seekers and shaymins so kinda stuck there atm. Also out of gardevoirs too.
For now would taking out diancie for say maybe lugia or mew work?
And i have 2 more belts...i think...should i swap them for the bands?
>>
>>26581261
>it was $25-30 for a FA.
The reason why i play tcg is becasue i have crazy luck on pulls. I got a Maxie full art and a Primal groudon on a blister pack, 2 full arts, kyogre ex and a secret rate on a trainer box. Those scizors i pulled in 2 blister packs and 2 singles.
I feel like its too much to spend over 10 in a card

My league is in my college, so all my friends play. The adjecent league is around 45 minutes away, and its mostly kids with theme decks.
>>
>>26581248
not that anon but I might point out it won a states *Juniors* division. I've payed it a bit online too, it's not bad at all. If you get set up right you just keep healing and wheeling and there is not much anyone can do to stop you.
>>
>>26581355
No Mew. It doesn't serve a purpose in this deck since you don't play D Valley.

Lugia EX would be okay. Deep Hurricane = gucci.

If you want, you could switch to a toolbox version of Fairies (one Pokemon of every important type to ensure you hit for weakness). One Yveltal, one Toad, one Manectric, one Psychic something (I'd go for Gengar), one Trevenant, and one Charizard will deal with almost every deck. Just switch to 8 Fairy and 4 Rainbow.
>>
>>26581522
I don't have a lot of cards anon ,_,
Traded like half my binder for the stuff i needed and had to buy the rest. And i meant the fates collide lugia that does extra damage to EX pokemon.
>>

If you wanna play for fun, they are okay. Can make a deck with Lugia, since Kyurem is too energy heavy. Couple it with winona, the fug, or anything from roaring skies.

You can also sell/trade them.
Dont need to play a meta deck to have fun! (>ω^)

Search your deck for a Basic Pokemon and switch it with 1 of your Basic Pokemon in play. (Any cards attached to that Pokemon, damage counters, Special Conditions, and effects on it are now on the new Pokemon.) Shuffle the first Basic Pokemon into your deck.
You may play only 1 Supporter card per turn (before your attack).

A neat way to get rid of shaymin starts or transfer a set up pokemon's energy if it survives.

Oh thanks god. I was worried I'd have to import one to the border, since the Center doesn't ship outside of the US.

Do we know if it comes with energies? I thought I read it lacked them, because of the special print and to offset the two extra boosters.

>>26583518
Depends on your needs.

If you're new to the game, an ETB is great for bulking up your collection and giving you some rudimentary supplies.

If you'd already planned to grab a half dozen boosters, it might also been worth it to drop an extra 20 to get the fancy box, which last for years and look nice on a shelf.

If you just need a few cards though, probably not the best bet. Roaring Skies and Generations would probably be your best bets, given they each have a good number of useful cards that are sure to last through the next rotation.

>>26588147
This.

The only reason to ever buy a booster box is if you find one for a discounted price, or if you find a long out of print set.

The best bet for buying boosters is always to weigh them.
>>
>>26588201
I see that, just wasn't sure if it had been confirmed in print or not. Guess I'd heard and bought into a good ol' Pokemon playground rumour.
>>
>>26588113

>>

>>
>>26588788
I messed up the wording as in I mistyped that word. It is because he said about buying singles that I had it in my mind when I was typing, but I did mean to type single packs.

Dude, I play mtg since 2001, I know what singles means.
>>
>>26588824
You're really reaching there. That would have to include a full Sky Field bench AND all of them would have to already have damage counters on them. How exactly do you plan on doing that? Swoop Across? And even then, Dusknoir is rotated, so you've basically got 40 damage on 8 benched Pokemon and no real way to move it to get KOs, unless you plan on running 4 Absol and 4 Super Scoop Ups.

You're idea is shit. Kys.

>>
>>26590509
Head Ringer's not that good at all this format, you might have too many energies, D Valley might be a better Stadium if you're running 3x Wobb even with M Mane accel, and Hoopa might not really be necessary.
Since you're investing so much in Wobb and since you're running 4-3 Mane, you might even consider some Muscle Bands or FFBs in there.
>>
>>26590452
The signature "gold" outline that started out as a minimalistic and subtle way to show contrast in the distinct features of a Pokemon (like Darkai or Landorus) unfortunately does not complement Yveltal that well since they decided to outline every single "line" on its body in near-uniform thickness.

If they had scaled back some of this gold outline and limited it to parts of Yveltal's body that actually needed contrast (the black parts of its body overlapping other black parts) or even just lowered the thickness to something more akin to the original Darkrai EX full art, it would be fine.
>>
>>26590587
I agree with you on everything but i wanted to know what your reasoning for head ringer being weaker. Just the lack of ex decks? That was my reasoning as well, i've been considering cutting them for more tools or items that can be useful. The energy count i've found is just perfect as well, the only change to make is maybe dropping a psychic for another lightning but it's running smoothly as is for the most part.
>>
>>26590706
The only EX-based decks in the entire format are Toad and M-Manectric. Sure you could slap it on a Shaymin EX, but you already hit it for weakness.
>>
>>26590706
>I agree with you on everything but i wanted to know what your reasoning for head ringer being weaker. Just the lack of ex decks?
Yes. The best decks of the format consist of NM, Yveltal (which has cut out Yveltal EX), Greninja, Trevenant, and Vespiquen/Vileplume. In terms of EX decks, you only have to worry about Toad, other Mane decks, and M Fug. You literally can't play it on Toad and M Fug is too fast for Head Ringer to matter unless you decide to run Megaphone or Xerosic.

I mean, ymmv since PTCGO's meta is pulled out of someone's ass, so you shouldn't absolutely drop it. At the very least, you can justify it by saying you need it for Mane's damage.

Why do all the full art EXes look so bad
>>
>>26574996
Holy shit this is beautiful. I've been out of the loop since around Phantom Forces and haven't bought many cards since. Just checked this generations expansion, how do you actually get these "radiant" packs? The full arts look so sweet. What else have I missed?
>>
>>26591540
The radiant cards are in the Generation boosters.
>>
>>26591540
Generations is a lot like Legendary Treasures. It's an amalgamation of reprints, new energy design, handful of new EX's and Trainers and Radiant Collection 2. Unfortunately the only way to get Generations packs legitimately is from sealed product. So far the best bang for your buck is the Generations ETB posted in the OP ($50 for ten packs) but it isn't out yet.

Pull rates are extremely generous, meaning the individual cards from Generations that are "valuable" hover around $5, with the exceptions of the Mega Kanto Starters and Charizard EX because of nostalgia and Jolteon EX because of playability.
>>
>>26591612
I just got casual back into it (since being a kiddo with D&P) with Base XY so I don't know about anything B&W.

Yeah that ETB looks pretty swell I have Yveltal and Lucario ones, will pick it up for sure. When is it out? Which other sealed products are worth it?
>>
>>26591721
It comes out July 1st, available online at first and I think after that it will be available at retail stores.

So far the only sealed products are Mythical Collection boxes ($13 for two packs, $6.50 a pack) and the Red and Blue Collection boxes ($25 for four packs, $6.25 a pack). Personally I believe the Red and Blue Collection boxes are more worth their price because at least the promo full art EX you get is worth around $5.
>>
>>26591781
I'm in the UK so prices are a bit different. Why the fuck is the Mew collection double the price of all the others?!
>>
>>26591853
It was the first and had the shortest run (instead of promoting Mew at the beginning of February, it was promoted in the middle of the month, so it only had 2 weeks in the spotlight before Celebi). That would be my guess. And more genwunner nostalgia for Mew.
>>
>>26591882
Damn there is a massive price variance between them. Seems the cute mascot are going for much more, namely Mew, Manaphy, and Jirachi.

Are any of the cards in the Pikachu and Hoopa boxes worth it? They're not generations it seems, is it just breakthrough?
>>
>>26591935
The Legendary Collection boxes only have Primal Clash, Roaring Skies, Ancient Origins and BREAKthrough packs in them, in addition to the promos.
>>
>>26591853
I don't know about the UK, but there was a serious distribution problem in the US with the Mew box. You literally could not find it anywhere. Stores were getting 3-4 boxes TOTAL for the month, so obviously a single person could easily clear a store. Because of this, most hobby stores and online sellers were pricing it at $24-$30 per Mew Box despite the MSRP sitting at $12.
>>
>>26591999
nice trips.

Again I think this had a lot to do with the fact that Mew's spotlight only last 2 weeks instead of an entire month. I had to hunt down a GameStop selling the Mew plush and Great Ball figure because I was worried they weren't going to restock before Celebi stuff started coming in.
>>
>>26588014
This card is ridiculously good. Not only does it let you reuse a Shaymin/Hoopa if it gets started or Lysandred out, it also can let you switch between attacks in decks that run multiple basics. You could Oblivion Wing on one turn and Ninja Boy out to Yveltal EX, Fright Night Yveltal, Darkrai or Toad the next. You could swap Jolteons, Glaceons and Regice without benching another. You could start Wobbuffet, then ninja boy to Phantump and Ascension, or vice versa if you're facing something like Greninja.

This is going to see a lot of play in basic decks.

Oh man can't believe I haven't properly noticed. Some of the last packs I bought (before picking back up with base XY) were Mysterious Treasures, loved my Lucario Lv x and was really confused at first with the way EX's worked now because they were startlingly more simple.

I've got to say though I can see where they were coming from, considering how the game is mostly marketed towards children, so dumbing it down so they can learn to play might make sense, but honestly the game was pretty basic back with the Original series though when I was 10 I had little interest in actually playing, just wanted Dragonite and shit. I know singles are the cheapest way to go, but if I wanted to open boosters, which should I go with? Generations? Breakpoint? Roaring Skies?

Looking to beef up my Trainers, primarily.
>>
>>26603702
Phantom Forces for trainers. Be warned it's likely to rotate out or be reprinted.
>>
>>26603761
Yeah, I've largely avoided PF for that reason. And pic related.

Is it certain they'll be rotated though? Heard some musings about the Kalos Starter set bumping PF out of the first rotation.
>>
>>26603800
And of course, there was no pic related.

Pokemon uses a rotation system, like many other card games including Magic. It's been like this since halfway through Gen I.
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Standard_format_%28TCG%29
There are different formats other than Standard with different card pools, but a majority of them are by no means supported. If you'd want to use your old cards, you'd have to find someone hosting an Unlimited Format tournament, which literally no one does.

So yes, almost all pre-BW cards are illegal to use for the most part. A few cards got reprinted, like pic related, but that's it.

>How is the card quality now?
I'm guessing you mean in terms of competitive viability. The current meta is fairly diverse and the balance isn't bad at all compared to older formats. There's a fairly diverse amount of mechanics in the meta, including discard manipulation, item lock, spread damage and sniping, OHKO turbo, and so on.

If you haven't played since Base Set, the bigger numbers might be scary, but things have just been expanded upon to increase precision. Trainers have actually regressed in power severely since Gen I.

>What's the best way to start now?
Download the client. PTCGO is very consumer-friendly and you can get rolling in no time. If you do end up spending money, $20 should get you a Tier 1 deck and more.

>How old are most people in the competitive scene?
18-24, like most TCGs. A handful are older.
>>
>>26603616
WoTC cards are largely collection fodder.

There's talks of the online "Legacy" format being expanded to physical play, but that only stretches from the HGSS expansion till the end of BW.

>How old are most people in the competitive scene?

Depends on where you go. Some locations have a lot of tots who always want to trade and are a nuisance.

>What's the best way to start now?

If you're not adverse to boosters, grab some Generations packs, they're almost all reprints. They also include fancy Energy cards. Literally designed to get folks back into the TCG.
>>
>>26603822
Play a top-tier Shayminless deck like Greninja or Garchomp.
Or play rogue trash and win tournaments anyways.
Post your deck, I'm willing to bet your problem isn't your lack of Shaymin.

It's safe to assume you won't be able to evolve that turn, since the Pokemon was just put into play.

It has practically identical text to this card, which did allow you to evolve.
>>
>>26606258
Because that sounds horrible?

Ninja Boy will be a 2-of tech for sure but I doubt it'll be the center of any really successful deck strategies.
>>
>>26606312
It says effects transfer, so that might mean "able to evolve" in the same manner as "can't attack."
>>
>>26606258
honestly it seems like an amazing card that will fit into and create tons of new strategies. Or at least old strategies rehashed.
>>
>>26603800
Kalos Starter Set is not going to bump anything. If Phantom Forces doesn't rotate, it's by design, not because of some retarded "oh, we can't rotate this set because it'd violate some fictional maximum set amount to rotate" rule.
>>

>>26604099
I'm playing Bunnelby/Sableye Hammers in Exntended, and Vespiqueen/Vileplume lock in Standard since they seemed like budget options to use for each format. Both would benefit greatly from a single shaymin, being able to ultra ball into more gas without using Jirachi would be fantastic.

The butthurt the decks cause is just gravy on top

>playing Expanded before you even have Shaymin
Vespiquen/Vileplume is absolutely not a budget deck, since its one of the few decks that require 3-4 Shaymin to operate on a fundamental level
>>
>>26608579
That's what I realized after replicating the list without Shaymin, and hence my frustration.

Ultimately, it seems most decks benefit from the raw draw power Shaymin gives you, and ultimately every deck wants these cards. If this were a certain other TCG, the card would be banned in a heartbeat
>>
>>26608563
Why you save untradeable packs?
>>
>>26608633
They're currently up for trade. All of them are tradeable.
>>
>>26608620
Again, there are plenty of decks that don't need Shaymin to operate.

>If this were a certain other TCG, the card would be banned in a heartbeat
Why? Because it's a staple?
Because if that's the case, Shaymin would absolutely not be the first card considered for that reason. Every deck demands 4x Sycamore, VS Seeker, and Ultra Ball, whereas several decks get by with 0-2x Shaymin at most.
>>
>>26608672
There really aren't that many. Greninja and Garchomp are the only ones that come to mind. Although some decks are slow paced enough that Octillery is an acceptable replacement in the mean time.

>>26608620
It would only be banned if the card had no drawbacks. It has several.
>>
>>26604923
>Basic
>Safeguard
>Cool shiny pallet

Shit tastes breh.
>>
>>26608770
Greninja, Garchomp, and Wailord are all on the tier list. That's 3/15 decks that don't run an important staple card.

But the tier list doesn't matter. You're talking about winning tournaments on PTCGO, right? You can do that with any deck. And there are dozens of rogues that do not use Shaymin, that I have personally won several tournaments with.
>>
>>26608803
Care to give a new player some names of rogue lists, or decklists?
>>
Buy a custom deck to start playing offline, it is $90 and almost half of it from 4 vs seeker, wonder how much cost a top tier deck
>>
>>26608949
A top tier deck costs anyway from $150 to $200. Most of it comes from two $40 Shaymins and a playset ($40) of VS Seekers. The rest is usually pretty cheap.

Greninja is probably the cheapest because of not running Shaymin and Rayquaza is probably the most expensive because it runs four.
>>
>>26608822
Pick anything that doesn't need to turbo. Meaning, not Night March, Vileplume, Trevenant, M Ray, or anything that relies on T1 DCE/DDE.

Virtually every EX, Break, Mega, and non-NFE Pokemon outside of the obviously unusable ones is viable online.
>>
>>26608790
>$200
>$70
>$35
>$30

Objectively worst possible secret rare.

Magearna-EX – Metal – HP160
Basic Pokemon
Ability: Mystic Heart
Translation forthcoming.
[M][C][C] Soul Blaster: 120 damage. During your next turn, this Pokemon’s Soul Blaster attack does 60 damage.
When a Pokemon-EX has been Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
Weakness: Fire (x2)
Resistance: Psychic (-20)
Retreat: 1
>>
>>26611583
Ability: Mystic Heart
Prevent all effects of your opponent’s attacks, except damage, done to each of your Pokemon that has any [M] Energy attached to it.

Could they at least make challenges that require knockouts doable against bots? The rate this is going I am going to have to do 40+ games.

And no the solution isn't fucking with the concede function.
