Recommendations:
Most of you know the complete ones, like Glazed, Light Platinum, Flora Sky etc.

Kanto Black is worth playing if you want to replay Kanto. Just has Gen V Pokemon, updated mechanics, and you don't need cut.

Incomplete Hacks:
Obsidian Black/Pewter White (6 Gyms)
Gaia (6 Gyms)
Eclipse (4 Gyms)

Hacks that are only just getting started but worth keeping an eye on:
Firered Rocket Edition
Gary's Mod
Dark Crystal
Pokemon Heiwa
Pokemon LIFE

Continuing from last thread:

>>26502650
FAR easier
sprites are two frames for the back and front in Pt/HGSS

>>26502581
You import one, say the front sprite parts, then toggle on "sync". After that, you can import the other 3 sprites as long as "sync" is toggled on. What "sync" does is take the palette of the first image and point every pixel of the next 3 to the correct color.

Each pokemon has 20 files that are allocated to them indivually. This includes things like gender differences and shiny palettes. In order to replace a sprite, you must edit and replace al 20.
If you want to add an evolution like noivern, find the dex number of the pokemon you want to edit over, multiply by 20, and add one. This is the first file in the uncompressed folder corresponding to that pokemon. Do the same with the pokemon whose sprites you want to use, copy into a new folder, and rename them as the files you want to replace in order. After making sure that you have the file named correctly, replace the old ones with these.

If you want to add a shiny palette, you must recolor the first sprite you imported. I also suggest using a hue shifter to make sure the colors were uniformly changed. To import, toggle on "Shiny" and toggle off "Sync", importing the image over the currently distorted original. It should be the last step you do
>>
Working on the regional Pokedex for my hack. What would be a reasonable number of Pokemon for a fairly large Region with the usual 8 gyms, but a lot of other towns and side areas?
>>
>>26502872
I'd say somewhere in the region of 300, at most. 250 is always a good number though. Don't want to make it too big.

I'll look into doing that then. Thanks.

Alright, I did that, here's what it looks like.
>>
>>26502872
I think somewhere around 200 is a good amount.
>>
>>26502887
Those lines in the front sprite's wing means the color isn't there.
Try using that as the palette base because they tend to have more colors anyway.

Also, you need to erase the woobat from behind noibat and fully replace the other wing frames, because DS games only allow 16 colors in this format.
>>
>>26502919
Bloody hell. Maybe another time.
Is Heart Gold the same concept for extracting and editing?
>>
>>26502991
Lel, now you see why there are no completed sprite hacks. We need a program like Console Tool that can develop its own animations export them as .namr files

There's an easier tool but havent used it since like 2009, so give me a minute to check.

Using essentials, how do I specify which form I want when adding Pokémon with multiple forms, i.e. Shellos east/west, Basculin red/blue, to the list of possible encounters?
>>
Under the script Pokémon_multipleforms you will find this:
(line 477)
MultipleForms.register(:SHELLOS,{
"getFormOnCreation"=>proc{|pokemon|
maps=[2,5,39,41,44,69] # Map IDs for second form
if $game_map && maps.include?($game_map.map_id)
next 1
else
next 0
end
}
})

MultipleForms.copy(:SHELLOS,:GASTRODON)

Add your map id to the MAPS array.
>>
>>26503654
If it's impossible to expand the amount I don't see what's wrong, I mean you aren't going to include all 721 in your hack, and if you attempted it your hack would be a shitty clusterfuck with 20 Pokémon on every route and in every cave.

Anyone think they can tell me why the ability isn't working? In testing, stat boosts (Attack, Defense, etc) are still being counted.

You write an error after # Chip Aware there's the unaware part, add an || after the :UNAWARE)||

Instead of if attacker.hasMoldBreaker || !opponet.hasWorking ability, just add it by adding the ||!opponet.hasWorkingAbility(:HANDOFFATE) after the unaware.

Likewisei in AI write :UNAWARE) || opponet.blablablabla

Sometimes I'm super annoyed by 8-bit limitation. I finally got to looking at attempting to cover a song an anon wanted me to do, and the main melody is easy to understand and the bassline seems like it could be ported easily but then everything else in the song is a huge clusterfuck of moving parts and no single part would fill the song's background enough to hide there only being three total sound channels plus percussion.

I know I had that issue slightly with Ever Grande, with the bells being absent in the first part of the song and an anon noticing that absence, but I feel the song is overall strong despite that, with the rest of the song feeling "full." Here, I don't know what course of action would give the illusion of a big series of moving parts, because there's nothing dominant in the song outside the main melody and to a small extent the bassline.

I'll try to give some WIP when I'm far enough to see if I can salvage it, and I'm really just rambling for the sake of bumping the thread, but I sometimes question my love of 8-bit audio when I come across situations like this. Then again you could argue that a good composition overcoming the limitations of 8-bit audio is part of the appeal, but then again the annoyance of those limitations is exactly why the NES has like half a dozen audio expansion chips, I don't fucking know. Bump.

I think I know what fucks things up. For Bulbasaur, items 6-9 are images and then 10 and 11 are palettes. If I change 10 to one of the images, it gets messed up, if I change 11 to the image, ivysaur gets messed up as well as bulbasaur. Not sure how this works. Anyone around?!

God, it's too early for me, I misread that. Yes, any help is appreciated!
Right now I'm just using a HG hack as a base since it does what I need already, just need the pokemon that I want.
>>
>>26522075
If it's just for personal use, I'm not sure how far you want to go with it, but I know he also figured out how to change the overworlds. It was the first time I had ever seen the overworlds edited for Pokemon in HGSS. The only other time was with the Light Platinum remake, but that was a few years after this first appeared. I wish the guy finished the hack, but I know how that shit goes. Real life gets in the way, more important things take priority, and stuff like this just falls through. I really hope people hack HGSS more in the future, it's my favorite game and there aren't many hacks outside of slight script changes.
>>
>>26522111
I mainly just want to add in 4 or so mons and that's it, it's definitely doable to get all the battle sprites in game in an hour or two. There's a tutorial on YT that explains how to change the overworld sprites, I'm not up to that yet but I'm looking forward to having Tyrunt walking with me.

>>
>>26522030
>The only generation games that can add more Pokemon are the 3rd generation games

Regular Gen 1 has room for 103 Pokémon if you move the ghost and fossil sprites elsewhere, and recently we've cracked that barrier entirely and you can add as many Pokémon as you want. https://hax.iimarck.us/topic/6738/

Gen 2 should hopefully get the same treatment in the future.

It's hard to rate out of context, but overall it's pretty decent. You'd definitely want a sign at the south end telling the player which path goes where, or connect the paths at the north end with a Cut tree or something to make going from east to west and back less cumbersome.

Finally implementing pokébodies.
Pokébodies are inate species-specific secondary abilities that perform additional effects to their other ability.
So far I have:
Levitate- Immunity to most ground type moves
Photosynthesis- Restores 1/16th health in strong sunlight

I'm also thinking of:
Flame Body/Static/Poisonous- Additional 10% chance to inflict their respective status

Ice Body- Photosynthesis clone

Drought/Drizzle/Desolate Land/Primordial Sea- same as now, but persist as long as user is on the field. Once 5-8 turns is up, weather clears when user leaves.

Rock Head/Sturdy/-ditto

What other pokébodies should I include?

Hey, I know I should probably lurk more, but im just going to throw it there.
What im wanting to make is a game with an original map and story using the Gen 5 dex.
Where should I start?
>>
>>26531279
Gen 3 has Pokédex expansion and several premade ROM bases with all of those Pokémon. If you don't care about triple battles or any other special major features of Gen 5 that sounds like your best bet, since Gen 3 is the most commonly used base.

Hacking Gen 5 itself would require a ton of advanced knowledge because we have few tools for it and the ones that do exist are buggy.

There's also Essentials, an RPG Maker base for Pokémon fangames, but I heavily recommend not using it, it's poorly made, though others disagree and will probably urge you to use it so maybe take my opinion with a grain of salt.
>>
>>26531471
This guy just shits on Essentials to troll the thread.

There's (almost) nothing you can do in the ROM that you can't in Essentials. You gain the benefit of not having to cram everything into obscure formats, obey byzantine restrictions, and not learn a low level language nobody but dedicated hardware/compiler people use anymore.

Essentials already has all the Gen 5 pokes and togglable settings from across the series.
>>
>>26531695
>This guy just shits on Essentials to troll the thread.

I'm not trolling the thread, I'm shitting on Essentials because I think Essentials is shit. I even said some people will disagree with me.
>>
>>26526801
Very square, make it seem more natural.
>>
>>26531695
All the pros to essentials are big pros.

What it lacks is polish. You have to put that in yourself, and most people don't bother. rom hacks usually come with polish out of the box, but nothing gets finished.

The problem with rom hacks is there's so much misinformation because of the barrier to entry. If someone gave you the source code to pokemon ruby complete with tools you would probably have just as good a time with it as essentials. Maybe better.

Low level knowledge is valuable because everyone and their brother can write js. But your hobbies should be fun, not work. The issue is that the only difference for a lot of people is fud.

I had an idea for a game that pokemon appear to live in the environments and eat other pokemon, vegeation, passively, and instead of weapons you use pokemon you catch in the overworld. you dont tell them what moves to use you just indicate parts of the environment to interract with, switch using l/r, A means interact offensively B means interact defensively. What the pokemon does depends on the context. If you're in the ocean riding a wailmer and you press B over an enemy your wailmer emits a warning pulse, but if you press A it might charge, or flee if it feels endangered by say a Sharpedo. The point is to emphasise exploration and discovery rather than battle. If you press A on ash-covered trees with charizard they will turn to glass and if you press A again he will smash them. Cool shit like that what do you guys think

>>
>>26537512
I really like the idea of this.
The post-apocalyptic desert is very Orre-esque. Maybe the player's goal outside of defeating team rocket could be restoring the area by completing side quests? Working to bring a more populated region with more Pokémon could open up a whole new set of challenges in the post game while also giving your game a happier ending.

>>26537534
I honestly don't remember.
I think there was a tool that did it for gen 4 overworlds back in the day, but it was really unstable. The overworlds were eventually converted into .btx files, however.
>>

Maybe I can jog your memory because this is driving me up the wall. You use pokeTEX to open the a/0/8/1.nds file, then you find the pokemon you want to edit, save it as a .poke file. Use tile molester to open the file and then not sure. Does that help?
If not, do you know how to edit icons?

You're right, but I want to combine a lot of the effects of similar abilities into one pokebody, e.g. an ability that hatches eggs faster, prevents freezing, and grants immunity to fire type moves.

386 if you optimize it perfectly. Just stick with only 1 regional derp rodent/bug/birb, minimal legends (give them all dungeons similar to genwun), and fill the rest with nice mons. Should be able to get the vast majority of mons from every gen that way.
>>
>>26504838
Expanding the dex has been done in rom hacks. 721 is easily possible to place in a game. The problem is the sound files for cries take up too much space to get the full 721 and a full region.

Not in all games. It's doable in Gen 3 and more recently Gen 1, but currently can't be done in Gen 2 (unless you count the two blank slots you can use), 4, 5, and I assume can't be done in 6.

>>26539524
It's slow, sometimes it falls off.

Essentials has a lower barrier to entry and an easier time changing anything.

Romhacking, with a base of choice, will feel just like a normal game. You'll be able to play it on anything that runs an emulator too. Much steeper initial learning curve.
>>
>>26535482
You're on the right track, but context actions usually make a game less fun. And they're more work for the developer.

What you want is for moves to do stuff with the properties of the environment. Like "rocks have 50 hp" as opposed to "charizard breaks rocks". These kinds of building blocks allow for gameplay the creator hadn't thought of.

I think a system like that could make battles more fun too. And it would let doubles/triples emerge naturally. Other pokemon just walk into the fray.
>>
>>26538620
Well yeah. But it looks like all better tooling does is make hacks more ambitious, not more likely to get finished.
>>
So im playing Crysal Kaizo, and I dont think the mons can learn moves naturally. Can they?
>>
>>26543371
Every Pokémon gets their "competitive" moveset in like their first few levels, that way all opponents can have competitive teams, because you'd have to add a ton of data to give every single random trainer full customized movesets. Only major trainers have customized movesets, and everyone else just uses their last four level-up moves.

Otelpor Route.png
451KB, 1198x1361px
So, what do you guys think of this?

Otelpor Route is meant to be visited a few times, so obviously there are quite a lot of different paths to take. It was my goal to make a route with branching paths, because they're some of my favorites in the games.

To explain a few gimmicks: the big cave entrances don't lead to caves as in dungeons. You just enter them and so you can't see your character anymore. You have to walk around to discover where you're supposed to go, and sometimes you'll get encounters with special Pokémon (as in, Pokémon you can't find on the route otherwise). In this case the three of them are straight paths so nothing crazy, but they're a way for me to add depth to the world even though it's only third gen.

The dirty path south of the map has itemballs buried in it. Sometimes though, the itemballs are actually a Pokémon, the usual Fungus/Voltorb stuff I guess.

Also, the elevated path on the left has a bunch of trainers so even though it appears empty, it isn't in-game.

Anyway, that's it and I'm kind of "proud" of it. It most likely could be better, but I think it's the best map I've done.

Music related is perfect for it I think:

It's working so far. If you're following the actual limits something has to be cut and everyone likes something else.

If you had that little bit at 17 well then no one will complain but assholes.

Anyone here ever play 'Expert Emerald'?

It's a 386 hack that ups the difficulty.
I remember loving it, but it was 2013 when I last played it, so maybe it was actually shit and my memory is bad.

Didn't see it in the pastebin so I was wondering if it had a bad reputation here.

It's a very old hack that makes lots of completely retarded changes (Huge Power Scizor and 600 BST Swellow), and the level curve sucks, so it can be a bit of a grind fest. Over all it's pretty crude and there are probably better 386 hacks by now, but if you don't care about quality it's still pretty fun and fairly difficult.

Ah, it's starting to come back to me now.

I think I just liked how cheesy it was. I believe I even Nuzlocke'd it like a madman before getting blown the fuck out in one of the double battle gyms.

Bumping this question

It's up to how much you're willing to code.

I programed Surge's gym puzzle from scratch with custom functions.

Is there a FireRed hack which exchanges rat/bird pokemon for some gen 4 mons or a hack with all of gen 4 already in it? I remember reading someone cracked the code and can now add more than the 386 limit. If not, I'm fine with some rat/bird mons out.

Yes! I wanted a "great barrier reef" feel, and I also try to include more Pokémon in the overworld, so using Corsola was perfect for me.

Thank you. Which Gen 4 tile are you referring to?

I can't find Wischu's icon editor anywhere. Is it under a new name?
>>
>>26563229
Yeah, it's bundled with his other tools under the name Advanced Series. The Pokecommunity download link is probably broken, but you should be able to find it elsewhere.

Isn't that for gba only though? I was reading about an nds version.

Thanks, it's for an Essential game I'm making that probably won't ever see the light of day.
