I can still see them making the two leave each other at the end, but man it'd be pretty awful after all they've done. They keep pushing Ash/Serena down our throats even this late into the series. The snowball scene from this episode was pretty much straight out of dozens of other shounen scenes between the main protagonist and his love interest. I just don't know how they can get rid of Serena without facing outrage by many.

This is basically the best case scenario in my opinion. Let Ash have a league win, maybe keep the endings ambiguous in regards to who's sticking with him as he decides to go do something else for a bit, an "the adventure continues" theme is in there somewhere, and then we fucking move on to another protag for Sun and Moon.

Greninja is not getting boxed or being left somewhere you fuckboys. Greninja's entire purpose and the way events in his life played out binds him directly to Ash. Both of them practically justify each other's existence. Greninja cannot get stronger without Ash, and Ash forgoing Greninja in some manner would be a pure detriment to his own progress. It's called Ash-Greninja for a reason.

This is isn't at all like any of Ash's other Pokémon, none of them can fucking transform through the sheer power of their immaculate bond, none of them have a developed backstory of how literally no trainer was suitable or capable of bringing out their full potential until Ash entered the picture. Olympia flat out says their future together holds great power and love. You don't just abandon all of this shit for the sake of marketing and status quo.

The ultimatum really is if Greninja leaves, then Ash leaves too. They are fucking soulmates and the only way either of them can achieve their life goals is if the two of them continue to work together. You know, to get much, much stronger. Of course the other possible option is Ash just bringing Greninja to the next region, but that's a lot more cumbersome than it sounds. Unless Ash's role in the story is changed, you can't just have him with this super powered Pokémon and expect it to work. They could pull some really contrived bullshit reasoning to depower the thing, but nobody wants to see that.
