Elm's my favourite Professor and I had hoped he'd get to introduce the Pokémon world himself in HGSS, but alas.

Originally, I take it that they were emphasizing G/S is a continuation, it didn't need it's own identity because it was building on the established framework of the original. All subsequent regions got their own identity since they were all made to be self-contained. Yes, Johto will always be stuck as being an accessory to Kanto.

I wish more came out of the research the Professors focused on.

It sucks that their research really yields jack shit ultimately and has no real results. Imagine Elm continuously gave you new information on Breeding and gave you breeding items, or even taught you about egg groups and moves.

Birch could have introduced new ways of attracting pokemon or tell you tips and tidbits on where pokemon live like "Hey, there's a small aclove where I once found a habitat of Bagon in Meteor Falls."

Rowan's study should have yielded shit like gift evolutionary stones and items or just general info about pokemon who don't conventionally evolve.

Juniper was up and about doing her job talking about lore and stuff

Sycamore was the most involved Professor as the entire game had intense focus on his field which I unfortunately didn't really like all that much.

I wish the gave you more side quests or objectives. Like "Catch this pokemon and see me" or "Check out this location and find this then get back to me." Make the pokedex filling aspect of the game more involving. Or maybe they discovered new cool shit and mechanics to aid you.

This is some sad truth. I commend the villains for actually having something groundbreaking happen when all those professors do is have you do menial labor and take observations. I mean, they're fucking professors who dedicated their lives to their field yet they can't take it upon themselves to study shit for themselves.

To be blunt, no real researcher EVER did research themselves. They ALWAYS had others do the leg work for them. The only thing they really did was come up with a conclusion based on the data compiled. Pokemon professors don't even do that, they just leave all the work to the dex.
