Gen 1 has always been held in high esteem, but the ones who refuse to enjoy anything else are faggots
Gen 2 is also held in high esteem, but with the acknowledgment of problems such as the easy difficulty and lack of new pokemon relative to the amount of available pokemon. To my knowledge only genwun babbys shit on gen 2
Gen 3 is probably the most divisive generation. Some hold a special place for it, but it's usually seen as one of the weakest entries despite many huge improvements to the overall system - but muh water trumpets
Gen 4 I think is where you start to see more diverse opinions. Personally I consider it the best generation, minus D/Ps problems such as the slow speed of the game. Other just flat out dislike it. Each to their own.
I haven't kept up with opinion as much since gen 5. At the time people seemed to be pretty keen on it, and yet now people seem a lot more let down. I think the lack of a "grey" version that improved on B/W like Platinum did to D/P as well as the delay of hoenn remakes disappointed a lot of people. I wasn't huge on them, I think the pokemon designs finally hit a wall, but you have to admit that it was nice getting actual sequels rather than a rehashed third version.
