It was. fairygate shattered vp, the difference with owlgate (and wottergate, for what matter) is that we had other things to talk about. XY reveal came with a full flagged trailer and 5 brand new relevant pokemon. Even when corocoro showed Sylveon, thus starting the fairygate (mind that the debate ended at E3, so months after) we always had something else to talk about. Ice is a pretty good type for moves, but not a for a pokémon's typing, even if offensive. You're better off just slapping it on a offensive Water mon since every single one get Ice Beam. Luckily their physical moves are less distributed to other types.
Fairy is nowhere near balanced with its only weaknesses being uncommon as fuck as well as having great resists+immunity on top of being great offensively as well. It's easily the best type right now.
Bug is not a good typing. The only ones that are really viable are the ones with the excellent Bug/Steel typing.
