If you do the trainer challenges, you will eventually unlock a few starter theme decks for free, that is about the same level as theme decks you can purchase from the store. If that doesn't sound appealing, Wave Slasher and Dark Hammer are pretty okay theme decks.

In the TCGO, if you play in a tournament and you don't make it to the finals, can you just press 'Quit Tournament' and join another one and still get the rewards? Or do you have to stay in it until it's over in order to get your rewards?

what I've been doing so far is drawing energy with articuno and accelerating with milotic, trying to get greninja and feraligatr up as fast as I can
once they're set up I've been tossing water shurikens for guaranteed 160 damage second strikes which seems to be the only thing that has a good chance against all the EXs that other people run all the time

Fit in a Hoopa EX, it's virtually staple in Mega decks.
A fourth Fairy Garden would be good too, so you can cycle Altaria to heal
Let DCE be your dedicated special energy for M Altaria and run basic Fairy to accelerate with either Xerneas, Mega Turbo, or Max Elixer. Right now, it takes you two turns to set up an Altaria which is too slow for what you're trying to do.

Theme decks for what you listed as well as giving you more choices on what to run in Versus mode and Theme Tournaments.

XY Blue is the best theme deck, so there's no point in buying a theme deck if you just want to grind.
If you want cards to move into Standard, you can get an entire theme deck for a single pack. They're worthless.
Packs are gambling and you'll never pull what you need or enough copies of it.

Use all your tokens on tournaments to get more tickets so you can get packs to trade for what you need.
Save tokens for the weekly bundle since they contain cards you otherwise can never get without paying exorbitantly.

Not intruding on this argument, but this reminded me. I posted a few threads ago that my gf and I picked up this and the other PRC theme deck to play against each other. I'm a competitive player so this was an absolute nightmare.

And of course, somehow, some way, Ocean's Core - the theme deck I chose - is better than the other one because of shit like pic related and alpha growth Whiscash. She got pissy about losing all the time so we scrapped the theme decks to build a Medicham deck and a Whiscash deck out of the remains.

It's a lot less stressful than trying to play with the theme decks, jesus christ.

You're absolutely correct. It's not like this at all in any other TCG. For most other card games, you can buy 3-4 of a starter deck, slap them together and throw in some staples you have sitting around, then go on to win locals.

I haven't played the tcg since like gen 3, but I've got a question. Why is it that all the rarest cards in the modern card game seem to have this hideous CG art on them instead of beautiful hand drawn art. I looked up some of the new cards and it looks like the common cards are all still hand drawn, but the rare cards all look like shit. Well, Player 1 was the one who played it illegally, made Player 2 perform an illegal action, and gained significant advantage off the play.

Generally, Player 2 not calling out Player 1's illegal actions is more of a warning thing at worst, and that's all that Player 2 did. Punishing them both equally would have made even less sense.

Besides, Wonder Energies have the most synergy with the deck. They can be moved by Aromatisse, can't be discarded by Jirachi, and the low number allows max elixir to be the acceleration you need as opposed to DCE.

Haven't seen the card outside of legacy in months.

Xerosic is a threat, but not much of one. I think you overestimate the effect of special energy with Altaria in the first place. It's a 30 damage heal, which isn't very relevant outside of the Trevenant matchup, and a bonus 30 damage, which is becoming less and less relevant as BREAKS take over the meta and get to 140 HP. From my limited experience with the deck, it's important to hit for 130 HP once a game, but often you'd be in the same exact spot doing 100. The ability to move the Wonder Energy makes it getting discarded from a knockout a bit less likely, since just about every threat in this game is telegraphed. Just about everything that one shots Altaria is small enough to be knocked out without the bonus 30 damage as well. It's a shit deck because it's unrefined, sure. But nothing is going to make Altaria into a good card. My take on it is built on speed first with Elixir and then longevity second with Max Potion/Exp Share. I think that's the best way to make it work.

Well, since you're not running DCE and don't care about the secondary effect, then M Altaria is just an objectively worse Xerneas. Xerneas hits for the same amount with the same number of attaches, but has a much more important first attack, isn't an EX, doesn't require a Link and an evolution, can take advantage of FFB, etc.

If you're even going to bother running M Altaria, it's imperative that you take advantage of its strengths. Specifically, the healing; I'd personally play it like a Sylveon EX deck that has the advantage of setting up much faster and can heal the entire bench. M Altaria obviously isn't a good card, but purposely running a gimped version of it when there's potential for more is masochistic.

Altaria has 220 HP. The idea is to withstand a hit and then heal. Your chances to do that with Xerneas are pretty much slim to none. If you want to call Altaria a worse Gardevoir then I would agree with you. Gardevoir hits for more damage given a similar setup and only has 10 less HP.

The healing on Altaria is ONLY good against spread decks, and the only spread deck currently seeing any success is Trevenant. I've only seen two instances of healing something on the bench out of a dozen games, and it wasn't relevant damage in either of them.

If a card comes out that lets you redistribute the damage on your pokemon similar to reuniclus, it will be a good effect. Right now it's shit.

Gardevoir's problem is that you need six energies on board to hit for 180, which is surprisingly a lot. Especially when it means you've wasted X turns with Xerneas getting them on board, then lose 3 every time Gardevoir goes down, etc. M Altaria isn't comparable because you only really need two energies to swing, don't need to fumble with Xerneas, lose nothing extra off a KO, etc.

The healing on Altaria works exactly like the healing in Sylveon. Sylveon only heals for 50 a turn and requires more setup than Altaria, but it works more than well against non-spread decks because being able to retreat for free is huge and very few decks other than NM really hit for more than ~110 a turn. Have you played Sylveon?

Playing it like Sylveon would mean you'd be sitting on 2-3 M Altaria and shuffling between them every turn, meaning each Altaria would heal for 90 before it's time for it to bat again. That's significant. Throw in Fairy Drops, or maybe even just run it with Sylveon, and the healing can keep up with the rest of the game.
