They pick and chose what is canon. The first movie was tied in to the anime complete with Mewtwo making an appearance set before and after the movie.

I think ash used aura a couple times too.

If you're familiar with any other popular mainstream anime, then you'd know where the movies stand in terms of canon. They're designed to fit in certain time periods in the anime's run (so audiences who keep up with the TV series can make sense of them a little more plot wise) but the actual events are basically non-canon. The shit that goes down in the movies is too big to be ignored, but of course for the show to run smoothly they can't keep acknowledging shit that happened in them, so they're a separate continuity.

That said, they sometimes pull a GT and acknowledge the movies, which only confuses thing even more.

Movie acknowledgement just sounds like a hassle to even put into a series, but I'm just talking about Pokemon in general. I fell they ended up with the idea of 'let's make theses movies for the fuck of it' and that's why I'm watching Rise of Darkrai on tv right now

They don't reference the events? They rarely ever reference any events from the anime.

They don't matter to the plot? Neither do most episodes.

Ash acts like he hasn't seen ___ Pokemon before which he saw in the movie? He has done this in the anime many times before as well.

Some movies have definitely been referenced as well about 6 give or take.

-The episode before the third gym match in DP, Ash and Brock instantly recognise the attack "Aura Sphere" and Lucario even though they have only seen one in movie.
