Yeah, the patches with the little star grass on them do not ever cause encounters. I don't think this was common knowledge until speedrunners figured it out a couple of years ago.

I was totally unaware of that. I just walked everywhere and though the forest had a really low encounter rate.

I don't know if I'd notice on any of them, didn't even recognize Santalune Forrest as Viridian Forrest until someon pointed it out. I am not very observant, I guess, but I also mostly don't find Pokémon games that atmospheric. I could never tell that Hoenn was supposed to be tropical for example, with all those conifers everywhere.
