Stats mainly, I suppose.
This has been a favorite of mine since red and blue. The speed/crit mechanic back then made it fun to use.

Now it's... there.
I still have my Persion from FRLG that I've brought all the way up to ORAS but it remains a tertiary member of non competitive battles only. I hope, eventually, some of the older pokemon who have fallen victim to powercreep get some kind of boost. I wouldn't mind a Mega Persian but I think that is like using a bandaid to attach a severed limb.

To be fair, non flying models are in game, but unused. Some guy ages ago injected Wodnercards of a lot of flyign type mons and found their unused models, like charizard, skarmory, stoic xatu, etc

inability to commit to pokemon without perfect IVs

I can deal with EV training and to an extent natures because they allow some sort of RPing but the random IV distribution to make pokemon different better or worse without regards for their role(s) triggers the shit out of me.

I'll take a modest tauros over a tauros with less than a 30 in all IVs any day.

I would love to be able to use Marowak, but it has a few things that keep it from being usable.

Base 45 is just not enough. Even if you build a team around it and pass it speed boosts, you still need to pass it +2 at full speed investment to outspeed a base 100s. And at that point, just pass the speed boosts to a Mega Heracross or something.

With Knock Off everywhere, even if you go through all the trouble of setting it up, you will just get hit with that and be left with a Pokémon that can't really do anything.

I think a proper evolution would help Marowak out the most. Give it a good ability and some speed or defenses. Mega would be fine, but I'd like to keep Thick Club. A third option would be to let Bonemerang hit Flying types, and giving it Bulk Up. Then it could do a really good CroCune like set.
