sometimes i wonder what leads to more unplayed matches: people who are too busy to play/time zone bullshit, or people who just lose interest halfway through.

I think there are extra elements to each of those points. I don't think time zones are that big of an issue, but people tend to be too lazy to send that first email and set up a time.
Losing interest seems to fall on people that lose their first battle. I'm guessing they are assume they might just lose their next battle or don't realise they have another one at all.
It feels like a lot of people don't actually read the rules.

shifting over to a more serious question/suggestion for the upcoming Gym Challenge!

Our regular format was challengers locked in with 6 while gym leaders could use any of the pokemon in their monotypes available. This, however, led to many challengers making a team that was good against a specific gym type they were poorly matched against before, but then possibly getting stopped on ANOTHER gym in the process.
My suggestion is that we make both the challengers AND the gym leaders locked in with a pool of 9 available. This would help both with fresh teambuilding strategies and with stonewalling from champions/gym leaders. Not to mention that once a team has gotten through about the 3rd-4th gym, a general strategy can be deduced and used against a challenger, whereas a team of 9 makes it much more difficult to predict a defense against.

Let me know what you guys think about this, as it's simply a topic of discussion at the moment!
