It's the shitty yellow shell that looks like an insect carapace. Out as place as fuck when compared to Turtwig and Torterra.

Pignite gets the prize though. Disgusting and uninspired. That line will never recover from being the third fire/fighting that also repeats design elements from the second.

Servine is probably the worst starter on merit since it's pretty obvious that it was just an afterthought intermediary after its pre-evo and evo were completed

pignite is easily one of the most decent looking mid stages. it could have been a single stage fire/fighting all on its own. if anything shit like marshtomp, bayleaf, wartortle, and charmeleon fall in among the worst

To me the starters have a pretty essential formula: first stage cute, second awkward, and third cool.

First gen actually doesn't follow this because Charmeleon, Ivysaur and Wartortle all look pretty cool, I blame them for making people hate the awkward looking ones from later gens.

And by "awkward" I mean they look adolescent. Not cute but not quite cool either. Croconaw is a good example.

This is also where I feel lines like Oshawott, Chespin and Chikorita fail-- their final forms still have an awkwardness to them, and in the case of Dewott look LESS cool than their second stage.

I really can't see it though. Dewott is the more serious type because its a warrior in training. Samurott is more intimidating/feral type because it's an armored warrior loaded and ready take on anything. I think they're both cool in their own way, because of the progression of the warrior classes. As a full fledged warrior will appear less dedicated than a trainee as a warrior can effortlessly wreck shit up without looking to focused.

Middle stages are always the worst.

There's a lot more cool mid stage starters than shitty ones. The only really shitty ones are prinplup, pignite, and to some, not including me, quilladin. Marshtomp is the coolest out of all though.
