seriously though while listening to HGSS's OST I realised half of it sounds like a marching band and the other half sounds like classical music

Well, I actually liked that about the game. The up beat tracks like Route 38 made you really hyped for adventure and the calmer tracks like the National Park made you ready to take things slow.

gen 1 and 2 were actually pretty well composed and their remakes kinda ruined them, especially hgss

Nah, there were one or two tracks that I liked more in Crystal, but on a whole I prefered HGSS. Still a bunch I liked equally, like Route 29.

The remake that messed up the tracks were ORAS. The music was still fine, and often better, but the punch from the percussion was consistently absent, making everything feel like it had no punch to it.

unova had such a forgettable ost. I only remember the Driftveil City song

Gen 4 games were hardly a mess musically, the Gen 2 remakes were pretty decent on their own, so was Platinum. Beside this both HGSS and Platinum remain the pinnacle of Pokemon games in general.

Replaying SS while still playing Platinum, the new OST tracks around Ecruteak are amazing.

HGSS was basically marches and folk / spiritual music with few chilled tracks and spooky themes, found it very compy as a marriage with their fourth gen jazz relatives from Sinnoh.
