You don't have to go with the cute moves like Baby-Doll Eyes and Charm.
Just use the same reasoning as Growl, Noble Roar, Parting Shot or even Intimidate. The opponent gets so intimidated by how serious and violent you are when you're just "playing".

Play Rough is a counterpart move to Play Nice. It lowers attack for the same reason, the two Pokémon become all buddy-buddy, causing the target to lose some motivation in attacking. The difference is that it also damages the foe unlike the 'nice' version.

Forgetting about the bad things doesn't make them any less real. Even if you couldn't tell why, you'll still react to things that possibly made you block out some very bad memories in the first place, or at least react to feeling such uneasiness on a bodily level.

Basically, even if your mind forgot, your body remembers. Of course in terms of game mechanics, that might provide some temporary relief, although I would have to argue most PTSD-inducing experiencing rely more on physical than mental trauma.
