I guess Platinum is considered one of the top tier games, but it's not strictly the best by any means. It's got major flaws with fluidity of gameplay, which is really the only thing holding it back.

That's terrible logic, especially for a video game. Sales don't necessarily have much relation to the artistic quality of the game. That's a pretty basic marketing fundamental. For one thing, it's a 3DS adapation, and anyone late to the XY Pokemon resurgence found a perfect reason to snatch ORAS. You also need to consider that parents are the main source of profit; they are the people who more or less spend the money on the games.
