How to progress in PTCGO, tl;dr edition:
>complete all Trainer Challenges (Cheat Engine's speedhack strongly recommended to speed up AI games)
>play through using Basic decks to unlock them for versus play
>farm Versus Mode theme ladder for Tokens and Tournament Tickets
>Enter Theme format tournaments whenever possible
>enter Standard/Expanded ticket tournaments and accept that you'll lose
>you'll get tradable tournament chests and sometimes tradable packs
>DON'T OPEN THEM
>Instead, trade them for the cards you actually want for a deck you want to build, most cards go for like 1-3 packs each.
>Public trade is like the GTS, if you want proper results, put up your own offers.
>if you don't know what deck you want to build yet, see http://www.pokebeach.com/forums/forum/tcg-competitive-play.156/ or check out tournament results for a list of viable decks

To see what your PTCGO stuff is worth, look on the PTCGO forums in the trading section. For example, Top Cut Trading inc
>http://forums.pokemontcg.com/topic/25163-the-top-cut-trading-inc-2/
provides an approximation.

M Alakazam. It looks like it's going to be another M Mewtwo, but it might end up good thanks to damage spread against NM.

Other than that, I already have 300+ packs put aside to collect the rest of the set. I've been streaming recently, and I'm going to take advantage of the new set to start making videos, especially since abluegolfball quit.

Going to put together M Alakazam/Bats, Genesect/Bronzong/Lucario, Fossils, Zygarde/Carbink, Delphox Break, and Ho-oh Break if it comes over. Maybe some joke decks like Weezing Mill, Wormadams, or Reuniclus.
>>

What deck beats Night March exactly?

How do you have fun with that deck?
>>
>>25825144
>What deck beats Night March exactly?
According to results, nothing.
Your best bet would be Trevenant, Seismitoad, or a Vileplume variant.
Alternatively, just beast through it with Yveltal. Even if it's a poor matchup.
>>
>>25825144
>What deck beats Night March exactly?
Greninja BREAK does pretty well.
Trevenant BREAK, Seismitoad/Giratina, and Vileplume variants have an easier time but it's not guaranteed.

>How do you have fun with that deck?
You play that deck to win, not to have fun.

Was just looking at Fates collide list and was thinking will there be any deck that takes advantage of Umbreon EX's end game, I mean on paper it seems amazing but what are the chances you're opponent will play into it?
>>
>>25827295

I'm going to go out on a limb and say for the most part, no, it won't be played. However there can be a meta game in which it is useful. Yveltal-Ex can Y-Cyclone onto it, softening up the mega and powering up Umbreon. There's an obvious synergy there that gives Umbreon a chance where I don't think there is one otherwise. The math is a tiny bit sketchy. Yveltal will do 110 with a muscle band, 120 if you have Reverse Valley out as well. Then Umbreon will also need a muscle band and the stadium to hit for 100. 220 knocks out all the important megas aside from primal Groudon, but I haven't even looked into whether Umbreon's attack works against primals as it does megas. A big problem is that the most popular mega, Manectric, is going to heal in between those attacks with Rough Seas. So what's left? Mega Fug? It's just way too specific a matchup for a 1 of of an otherwise weak card.

But yea if suddenly megas are really good I would expect to see it. And in that situation I wouldn't worry about people playing around it. Yveltal would power it up and you always have Lysandre to bring it back if it tries to retreat. Not to mention Mega Catcher being introduced to beat the dead horse that is mega evolution.
>>
>>25827420
I agree with everything you said, but Primals are Megas in all game mechanics.

I'm actually liking a lot of cards in this set, I'm not a meta only player though. So I find a lot of cards fun even if they are "bad" but the entire Burmy line looks really fun to use. The new Delphox looks GREAT, I want to try using the fossils too. Lucario looks interesting and as much as I want it to be good Mandibuzz BREAK is straight garbage.

I haven't played the TCG in 2-3 years at this point. I might still have some old cards w/ codes on them, but ta this point would they be any use in-game? What all have I missed, what is different?
>>
>>25828157
I normally set aside half the packs I get from tournaments to open and half to trade.
It's a good balance between my knowledge that trading is the best way to build deck and my addiction to opening packs.
>>
>>25828401
>haven't played the TCG in 2-3 years at this point.
>What all have I missed, what is different?

1) The format is incredibly diverse - probably the most diverse in (at least recent) history. There are so many competitive decks:

>Trevenant
>Greninja
>Night March
>Vespiquen
>M Manectric
>Yveltal
>Seismitoad
>Giratina
>Raichu
>Fighting
>Metal
>M Rayquaza

And those are just the ones I can think of atm.

2) Most of your old cards aren't usable. However, there are some that have been reprinted, like Ultra Ball, Level Ball, Skyla, and in Fates Collide N is getting reprinted. There are probably some others you can use - just ask people at league.

3) Catcher got errata'd to make you flip a coin. Now people rarely use it. Lysandre is the new Catcher.

4) Decks flow now. It used to be very few decks got set up quickly - thus why Tropical Beach was so popular.
Now you can almost deck yourself out turn 1 because of:
>Acro Bike (draw 2, discard 1 and keep the other)
>Trainer's Mail (draw 4, pick a Trainer, shuffle the rest back in)
>Ultra Ball
>Shaymin (draw until you have 6 in hand)
>Battle Compressor (search your deck and discard up to 3)
>VS Seeker (put a Supporter from the discard into your hand)

5) There's a shit-ton of locking. Item locking is the most common with Trevenant and Seismitaod.
Also, Giratina prevents your opponent from using tools, stadiums, and special energy.
And Garbodor got reprinted (you can't use the old ones - different attack), so that, Hex Maniac, Wobbuffet, and Silent Lab shut off abilities.
>>
>>25828532
thanks, that helps a lot! does this mean old card codes are useless anymore?

Also, I've seen some stuck about Break, with gold-plated 'mons. I'm assuming this is like EX, just another stage of card evolution?
>>

>does this mean old card codes are useless

Depends on the set. Expanded was introduced about two seasons ago. Instead of it being XY-on like in Standard, it's BW-on.

So some people might be interested in them, especially Plasma sets because of SR Ultra Ball and Max Potion.
>>
>>25828587
>Also, I've seen some stuff about Breaks, with gold-plated 'mons.
>I'm assuming this is like EX, just another stage of card evolution?

BREAKs are new. They were introduced in BREAKthrough.

They're not like EXes. When you KO an EX, you take two prizes. When you KO a BREAK, you still only take one, which is why Zoroark, Trevenant, and Greninja are busted.
>>
>>25828734

Okay, that's actually funny
>>
>>25828697
If you tell people you're doing a challenge, most of them are considerate enough to finish out the match so you can get knockout/damage req's. just be social
>>
>>25828940
>busted
Hold up there mememaster

No one runs Zoroark BREAK competitively, beyond maybe, MAYBE a one-of tech in one of the many Zoroark based decks (Yveltal, Mewtwo EX, and Vespiquen come to mind).

Trevenant and Greninja's BREAKs are only good because they shit all over Night March which currently sits at Tier 0.5. Otherwise, Trevenant is prone to bricking and deals damage very, very slowly and susceptible to Lysandre and Hex Maniac. Greninja, being stage 2, is unwieldy and suffers from consistency issue, dies to Hex Maniac, and is good against basically nothing else in the format.

So let's pump the brakes before we start calling these BREAKs "busted."

Drop a Break and run 3 BP Greninja, 1 XY
Did you forget to type in Slowking or Slowbro? Whichever one you're running, don't. No business here.
Center Lady and Float Stone don't belong here.
If you're going to run 2 Fisherman and 2 Retrieval, you need more than just 1 Compressor
Evosoda makes no sense here, you already have access to Dive and Ultra Ball
Where's Shaymin?

3 bricks easily, and you have the advantage of running both Dive and Ultra Ball to make 2 consistent.

>Oh and Slowpoke because of the second move. Just in case I get shit hands.
Walk-Off Homer isn't a good move. It's too situational and otherwise dead and, most importantly, you have zero ways of actually fueling it. How do you propose to get three energies set up, especially when you have to keep attaching for Moonlight Slash? You don't even run DCE (and shouldn't).

I really, really don't know what the fuck you are talking about. I'm back into the TCG after 12 years so I am trying to build a deck. I am mostly familiar with Break point cards since I've got more of those.
>>
>>25830279
I shouldn't have to explain this, but don't run Slowpoke.
You already have Dive and Ultra Balls to do exactly what Slowpoke's attack does, and all WITHOUT wasting a turn and two whole energies to do it. This is important because your ability to compete with the meta revolves around getting an early Water Duplication out, and Slowpoke slows that down significantly.
You also don't want to sit on a 70 HP basic that, again, is redundant with items that do the same thing without wasting your turn. And, again, you don't run DCE so there's no realistic way of powering up this slow, weak basic in a reasonable amount of time.

Also, going back over your list, I noticed you have 0 Sycamore and 0 VS Seeker, which is the opposite of what you want.
>>
>>25830211
I had to read it twice but the original anon meant Slowpoke, not Slowbro.

Nope, even IFF it gets reprinted the original will still be hovering between $10~20 due to how almost every deck needs it. Knowing TPCi they will probably do it either this summer or when RSK is near its end in Standard
>>
>>25830472
We already have a good timeline for 2016's product lineup and Shaymin tins aren't on it. However, I imagine that once the XY era comes to a close they'll either release a Legendary Treasures 3 or some tins to keep Shaymin EX in rotation.

>Pokemon isn't much cheaper than most card games
We've had this discussion every single thread for the past dozen threads.
It is cheaper.
Cheaper doesn't mean it's not expensive. A Tier 1 Pokemon deck will cost you $150~$300.
But that's how much fully-built rogues and low-tiers in other card games cost. Yugioh and Magic Standard decks regularly pass well above the $500 mark and sometimes pushes over $1000. And it gets much more expensive for other formats.
>>
>>25830589

I was 12 when it happened, so I remember it very well.
>>
>>25830701
And has someone who has played standard magic for years, the average standard pokemon deck is only 50$ 100$ cheaper than the average standard magic deck

It's cheaper, but it's still ridiculously expensive. And I'd rather spend that money on a magic deck desu because people actually play that game.
>>
>>25830725
>And has someone who has played standard magic for years, the average standard pokemon deck is only 50$ 100$ cheaper than the average standard magic deck
No. A low- or mid-range Magic deck is only $100 cheaper than the MOST EXPENSIVE Pokemon deck. This is the distinction that needs to be made. You're comparing the worst of Magic with the literal best of Pokemon.
I can put together a locals-winning Pokemon deck for well under $100.
>>
>>25830742
And I can put together a locals winning magic deck for 50-100, it's called mono red or anything aggro/burn.

When 90% of standard decks use shaymin-ex, a 55 dollar card, it's not that cheap.
>>
>Max Elixir going for nearly $2 each
I didn't know it was that in demand
>>
>>25830870
It is a night march staple.
>>
Is it worth it to buy an elite trainer box? Breakpoint boxes are going for 30 bucks on ebay, and its got some neat things.
I mean, it beats buying booster packs from target, and it has some extras. It would be a one time thing though.
>>

These things come in the theme decks, yet people are charging almost as much for 4 of these.
>>
>>25830904

Here's the thing though, each theme deck only comes with one of FFB and frankly no one in their right mind would buy a theme deck just for a single copy and have a majority of the remaining cards being useless bulk I also did a tally after I opened a case with a friend and it seems that you get less FFB and Max Elixir compared to other Trainers

We've had this discussion a dozen times. I should probably go back and just copy one of the dozens of answers that deals with your argument.

Ignoring your price hyperbole, Shaymin is
>The MOST EXPENSIVE card in the format.
>A card that you don't need a playset of, ESPECIALLY if you're building budget.
Now compare this to Magic.

The problem here is that your argument conflagarates budget builds with FULL, TIER-1, STATES/NATS/WORLDS-winning decks.
A perfect, 100% complete max-money Pokemon deck that can win any tournament at any skill level shouldn't go for more than $300. Maybe that's a bit of a lowball, but it's a perfectly valid ballpark.

Now, compare this to the same tier Magic deck. Not your locals $50 MTG shitter rogue, a full, Tier 1, 100% build, max-money Magic deck. Is it anywhere near $300, when cards like Jace go for over $70 and you need a playset of them? When your landbase alone will cost you well over $100?

And of course you'll say something like "Well, I don't need to build a Tier 1 Magic deck!" which is not only fucking obvious, but also ignoring the fact that you don't need to build a Tier 1 Pokemon deck either.
>>
>>25830925
You keep thinking I am arguing magics cheaper, which I haven't been.

I am giving you low cost decks that are often tier 1 or at least 2 and very viable. RDW being cheap does not make it's incredibly fast damage not matter. I've won many tournaments with a simple RDW filled with a ton of commons and uncommons and a few rares. What I am saying is that your low cost pokemon decks are as much outliers as low cost magic decks. And though they are cheaper, it's not by much.

Shaymin-ex costs more than any card in standard in magic. I mean shit, look at

Oh boy, a tier-1 Pokemon card deck costs ALMOST as much as a SINGLE retro video game!

Not only is it the cheapest TCG to play competitively
Not only is it the cheats TCG to collect for
It's one of the cheapest nerdy hobbies around.

No matter which way you slice it, it's the cheapest.

My comic book hobby costs me more
My retro games hobby costs me WAY more (a single high-end game starts at $250 and only goes up)
PC enthusiasm costs more
Model building costs more just on paint alone
RC planes blow every TCG the fuck out
Animu figure collecting is more expensive (most expensive figure I own was a Metal Gear REX which was $500 retail)
Magic the Gathering has cost me more in 2 months then Pokemon did in the past 6 months
Cosplay costs more
Attending a single convention costs more

Come the fuck on, dude

Drop Center Lady, Letter, Teammates, Judge, and Ace Trainer.
Center Lady is a bad card, this deck doesn't benefit from Letter, Teammates isn't good in an EX deck, and Judge/Ace Trainer are techs at best. You can keep them in if you want, but if you need room, they would be the first to go.
Regice isn't the best without DCE, but you can make it work if you really want to force it. You can try running Seismitoad EX instead, or just cutting it out altogether.
I would recommend adding in a set of 4 Max Elixer and maybe a third Palkia, since the deck really needs the energy and Manaphy+Golduck lets Elixer hit what's important.
I would also try to fit in 1-3 Shaymin and a set of Ultra Balls. Dive Ball is better, but Ultra Ball cuts down your hand size for Shaymin to draw you more cards. You can also try teching in a Hoopa if you want, but that's preference.

This is surprisingly competent for a new player. Just a heads up, though, Gyarados isn't a good deck. Not that you won't win a bunch with it online.
>>
>>25831744
Not him, but why is Center Lady a bad card?
>>
>>25831689

I mainly play at a shop called Gamers Guild which is technically in Spring Lake but is right there at the edge of Fayetteville. League is officially Sundays from noon until 2ish.
>>
>>25831734
>for laughs
It's not funny.
>>
>>25831802
A few different reasons.
The main problem is that it's a Supporter. Every turn you use a Center Lady is a turn you're not dropping Sycamore/Birch, Lysandre, Skyla, etc, all of which are more important cards that generate more advantage.
Healing 60 also doesn't matter all that much when most Pokemon are hitting for 75-100% of your HP each turn. It's very situational.
And the biggest problem is that a deck like this is already running Max Potion and Rough Seas.

The client can't sort cards for shit. Too often does weird bullshit happen that shouldn't in a card game. It's like shuffling a normal deck of cards and drawing 4 Queens off the top, the odds are way too low for the frequency the game shits out duplicate hands.

When I play Unown, I farewell letter for another Unown in almost 80% of my games. I don't know why it happens so fucking often, but it does. I have used Battle Compressor to find bullshit like 3 copies of a card in a row, only to use another compressor to find those same 3 still in a row. That doesn't even mention how often I see two of the same in a row. I don't fucking know why, but there's something fucked up about the shuffling engine.

it's just a shit game. I started playing it because of renewed poke-fever from the 20th anniversary hype/ mythical distribution/ mythical box & generations. At its core, it works best as a slow game of chance and skill where one opponent either plays safe Basics, or risky but powerful evolutions. However, after more than a decade of its existence, the game has atrophied into a schizophrenic game of chess and checkers fused together in one pain-filled experience.
>>
>>25833748
That isn't it at all, the game is fine if you play physically, the client just shits the bed.

...aaaand that's it.

Cube Draft can be really nice when you build your cube to accompany the quirkiness the TCG brings with it. Evo chains are entirely possible even in draft. Sometimes you might even get ALL the pokémon if you're lucky.
All in all it makes for quite a relaxed game. Even just drafting can be a very satisfying experience - right before you lose all your games because of the coin hating you.

Crazy question but does anybody know how I could get my hands on a 1st edition base set 1 booster box

Not buying online just run across one. Garage sales? Old shops closing?

Also I grew up during base set and I heard something about there being a pre release raichu? I want to say I saw one of those. But i'm guessing i'm probably mistaken. Have a strong memory of seeing one of those in a kids binder but I could be wrong.

How to spot an insecure underage

You gave the guy a compliment, you know that, right?

Calling someone a "genwunner" is the exact same thing as calling someone an OG. You're acknowledging the fact that they've been around longer than you. That they have seniority.

It's not an insult. Nothing about it is an insult.

I've actually been playing with some of those exact cards since I was a kid. Feels good.
All the other cards probably were played by kids as well. It's nice to play with cards that have already been on adventures.

I get away with it by playing with other genwunners. :^) They're all MtG players and that's why we're drafting.

It's called most competitive Pokemon TCG players are most likely 20+ years old. In my area (or just the game in general) the Masters Division is larger than the Juniors and Seniors combined

>Prerelease Raichu: Arguably the rarest card printed by Wizards. Rumored to have been about 6 to 50 made, some of which were retrieved by Wizards themselves. These cards came about during the printing of prerelease Clefable from Jungle, when some Base Set Raichu cards were attached to the side of sheets of Clefable cards. Wizards staff denied their existence for years, but have since confessed to the card's existence.

Normal Attach + Mega Turbo. Turbo even synergizes with the attack.
If you play Unlimited, pair it with Celebi Prime.

With a Muscle Band/Giovanni's, Beedrill will do 180 damage over two turns on top of Paralysis.
