Green will never be canon or make an appearance because of nostalgia. People who played the Gameboy games remember Red. People who are having their first Pokemon experience in the eShop can only play as Red. Gen III was the first gen to really think about the opposite gender character and give them some kind of role, but they didn't want to mess with the main Red/Blue story so they popped in a female player switch and called it a day. Even the Pokemon Origins anime uses Red.


Kris suffered the same fate, she was in the third game after the hype had died down for the Gameboy games and was replaced with Lyra when the remakes came out. At least she got in the anime.
