I've always been playing pokemon casually until now but I got bored of that and I want to step it up and start online battling.
I know literally nothing about which pokemon are good and which are bad and have no idea about tactics. Where should I start? Is there a beginner guide written somewhere?

Just build some shitty team for the start and start playing. You'll soon find out which mons are overused, what moves they use, how battlers build their teams. Unless you're inherently shit at the game.
