It was pretty much only flying and normal gems that even saw use. Everything that had Acrobatics was a valid user of flying, especially Flying-types or unburden mons. As far as I remember, only shitters used Normal Gem for Ambipom.

Give Gamefreak some credit.

They did nerf weather and brought in fairies to help fend off dragons.

And no /vp/, even if the Fairy type is strong, it is nowhere near as powerful as Dragon was in Gen 5.
