Using Essentials instead.

Just move on already.

I thought /vp/ hated that since it's reason why things like Reborn and Rejuvenation even exist, with their field effects.
>>

Continuing on my R1 rework, pic related is where I've landed in regards to nearing completion.
Red denotes trainers; optional and out of the way, 2 or 3 pokemon each, payouts are 100 for 3 and 80 for 2. Haven't worked them out yet, but planning on them having R1-R2 pokemon and starters or basic stage pokemon that have starter potential. I'm customizing trainer classes and their pokemon in an effort at increasing challenge instead of just changing native trainers to have KEWL TEAMZ XD like I was doing in my demo version.
Blue are NPCs; fisherman gives the old rod and the Mart Potion Guy remains.
Green is the NidoRanch. Nidoran poison is instrumental in many products such as repel and antidote; the NPC within will give out a Poison Barb.
Trying to keep the main path maintained a little; in the post-war reformation of Kanto, safe public transportation infrastructure is essential to facilitating trade and diplomacy. Therefore, grass should be at least one tile away on either sides of the road. As Pallet is a hamlet, a three-tile road wasn't deemed appropriate by Pokémon League Public Works department. In fact, the only reason a road was built at all was because of Professor Oak's presence there, as he is an important member of the scientific community (they wanted him closer in Viridian but he refused.)
So after this exposition dump, I'm looking for feedback and criticism. How's it look, /heg/?

>Essentials

It's shit. You sound like a Smash 4 fan, there's no reason to "move on" if there's nothing worth moving to.
>>
>>25744508
A few thoughts (just my opinion):

>keep some/most of the trainers by the roadside (or make them look in all directions so that they spot passing trainers)
>don't have squares of grass, omit a few tiles here and there to make it look less uniform
>have a little less grass - it encourages people to go through it if there's gaps where they won't get encounters
>the fisherman is a pain to get to right now - I'd love a little wooden pier across the water that he could stand on to fish

Love the Nido farm - cool detail to have, I need to hear about more maps and route ideas!
>>
>>25744826
>keep some/most of the trainers by the roadside
See, if you're going through R1 to grab Oak's parcel with maybe 0 potions (because Rival) and you hit every trainer, well... gonna keep going home to mama. HOWEVER, what you've said about the grass leads me to a realization that there should be a viable back path up the route to avoid them.
Your observation about the fisherman is why I post my maps. Totally missed that detail.
The NidoRanch is the shining star of this map. I just did the trainers, and one of them is a Nido Rancher with the male and females, so thinking the NPC inside the house will give out an antidote instead of the barb.
>>
>>25744438
Essentials itself isn't bad, the problem is that they only completed projects so far are handled by edgelords who think good game design is having retarded difficulty curves
>>
>>25744923
True.

Actually, if you made gaps in the ledges on the left-hand side of the map, you could create another way of going through the route that would incorporate the trainer and the fisherman.
>>
Is there an easy way to make a gen 5 hack or an equivalent (like Essentials but for gen 5)?
I've been wanting to make something that would work best in gen 5 but there's barely any info on hacking for gen 5.
>>

You can put gen 5 graphics in Essentials. Won't look very faithful because no 3D though.

I know Z80 assembly so I imagine I could do some pretty great things with it, but I don't want to spend tons of time on this for nothing.

>Ledges exist for a reason. Force the trainer to either go through grass or encounter a trainer. Ledges offer a quick, encounter-free way to backtrack
>Don't omit tiles and whatnot, that just looks ugly. The base games don't do that shit, and neither does real life. Putting one or two tiles of grass all by their lonesome is even worse as they do literally nothing.

I play Gen 2 hacks.

The split is pretty easy to add though, I have almost no knowledge of it and was able to add basic features like the Fairy-type and split without much issue by looking at other people's work.
>>
>>25746393
I play them if they're any good, and usually they're just lame difficulty hacks or poorly done 251s or OC regions with the usual bullshit fanfic tier storytelling and such.
Someone is doing a 251 with rebalanced encounters and p/s split in Gold right now that I'm looking forward to, no telling when it'll be done though.
>>
>>25748142
>251s or OC regions

Is there anything you can do that doesn't fall between "vanilla but enhanced" and original content?
>>
>>25748459
OC isn't bad itself, it's just in my experience the people who are good at figuring out all the necessary scripting aren't as good at making decent, tempered storylines or take too much influence from the latter 3 gens where it's YOU MUST SAVE THE WORLD ISN'T THIS KAWAII? OH AND MEET YOUR 2 RIVALS, ONE LOVES YOU AND THE OTHER ONE GIVES UP ISN'T THIS KAWAII?
It's simple: you're a kid who is off to be the best trainer in the region, and if you encounter legendaries it's a big deal but it shouldn't be a world ending deal. I liked in GSC how sure, the legends have awoken and some interested groups are concerned, but it's not a huge deal to the world at large. Shit went DBZ levels of escalation by Platinum, and it seems like many hackers only know how to do that. Fuck off, I'm trying to fill my dex and beat the Elite Four, I'm not trying to capture god. Should have kept the legendaries legendary instead of turning them into living divine whatevers.
>>
>>25748664
What Gen 2 hacks have you played that fit the description you just gave? Sincerely asking, I've had a pretty good track record with Gen 2 hacks that I've played.
>>
>>25748664
I'd say hackers are even worse about it than the official gens are, really. At least in Gen 4 there's an arc of escalation leading to meeting legendaries, I've played a lot of shitty hacks years ago that'll do things like introduce you to Arceus before you even get your starter.

Pic related is what I've ended up with, trying to incorporate all that feedback. There's a shortcut back down on the left, a direct way up in the middle but with trainers, and a backway up on the right but with forced grass encounters. You have two options going up and a shortcut down. Hell, if you're slick you can probably avoid all those trainers AND the wild encounters, but why even play the game if you're not trying to play the game?
>>
>>25748664
It takes a different kind of person to understand assembly/scripting well enough to do something advanced like ROM hacking.
Not everyone can do that while not trying to fulfill a power fantasy.
>>
>>25745003
I played zeta before and quit for some reason I can't remember. Thinking of starting it again. Wasn't it pretty much just a normal pokemon game that fixed some shit like HMs and IVs?

It had some weird shit like swag memes and Oak saying "shit" but other than that it was a rather normal Pokemon game with neat features. For something that was made by Reddit it could've been a lot worse.

I've considered trying my own Crystal++ attempt (or I guess a Crystal DX attempt since Red&Blue DX is an alright-but-ultimately-not-as-good-as-Red++ hack), but the thing that stops me is that, unlike Red where you can fit all cross-gens in neatly with room to spare, you have a 253 Pokémon limit in GSC and so you can't fit the crossgens in without removing Pokémon, which I wouldn't want to do because every Pokémon is someone's favorite. I'm sure one day someone will expand the dex beyond that number, though, because it's happening with Red right now:

https://hax.iimarck.us/topic/6738/

If something like this gets done with Crystal, I'd certainly help with a 721 hack, and the only thing stopping me from doing so with this Red effort is I haven't gotten it to compile (and if I see Shanty in an IRC I'll ask about it).

Out of curiosity, though, what other features would you want in in a Crystal++ besides the Fairy-type, split, and crossgens?
>>
>>25751526
Gaia is pretty great, it's the only hack I've played that's taken the time to get gimmicks like Burmy 100% accurate. Only complaint I have (didn't finish the beta, played up to the part where Regirock shows up then got distracted) is the region feels kind of zoolike with just how wide the variety of Pokémon is, like there's barely any overlap between route selection and you don't really feel like all these areas are part of the same region. But that's an issue with a lot of ROMhacks with big regional Dexes.

I think Maize has neat music and aesthetics. The entire game is meant to emulate Gen 1 as closely as possible, going as far as making 24x24 backsprites of later-gen Pokémon instead of updating everything to Gen 2 sprites like most Gen 1 hacks do, and using the vanilla Gen 1 audio engine instead of porting the more advanced Gen 2 audio engine (Brown did the same thing as well as a lot of older Gen 1 hacks but that's due to limitation from when it was made, we have the technology to easily port it now). It even has a primitive day-and-night where the music gets slower and comfier at night, I'd say the whole game is comfy.
>>
So on a scale of one to ten, how much should I kill myself?

I am currently working on Juggalokemon, an Insane Clown Posse ROM Hack.

I am slowly making my way through the Pokedex by adding grease paint and clown noses to the Pikamans.

I have replaced the main character with Violent J and Professor Oak is a Juggalo too.

I am not going to lie to you guys. I am having a fucking blast with this stupid shit. It is really relaxing for some reason.

Have any of you guys taken on any less than serious projects?
>>
So if I play Rising Ruby/Sinking Sapphire then switch the save file to vanilla ORAS, will I be able to use the save file online? I know the Pokémon will be illegal but I'd just inject competitive ones, I'm specifically asking about being able to use the save file as if it were a vanilla one without being banned from online for different save flags or whatever.
>>
>>25753260
The save files for gen 6 hacks are identical to the official games. Script editing hasn't been figured out yet, so all the flags are untouched.

00 and FF are used for specific functions in the game and can't be used for Pokémon slots without weird unwanted side effects.

FD is taken up by the Egg.

That means the only open slots are FC and FE, making it 253.

Similarly, in Gen 1 the vanilla limit is 251 (coincidentally) because 00 and FF are similarly taking up a slot, and the Ghost, Kabutops skeleton, and Aerodactyl skeleton all take up a sprite slot, though you can (and people have) move those pointers to something else, like Red&Blue DX has 254 Pokémon, recoding the museum to load the graphics from something else then moving the ghost sprite to FF since you aren't using the actual data of said slot outside its sprite. You'd have to remove all code regarding the Egg and breeding to add a 254th slot to Gen 2, though, and that's too small a gain to remove such a large feature.

Maybe it's because the tools and dearth of hacks out there (regardless of quality), but will patient learning and trial and error I find making a hack relatively easy. Of course, maybe that's because I don't get into the programming behind it and just run off documentations and tutorials with pre-made tools.

>A little update regarding the Pokemon Prism development process. I know you've all been patient and I hope you're not giving up on this project just yet.
>Due to my low amount of free time (especially on weekdays) I am overhauling Prism's development process. Prism for the longest time has been mostly a hex-hack instead of using a repository like many modern gen 1/2 hacks are doing right now. Here's what a Pokemon repository looks like : https://github.com/pret/pokecrystal
>Prism was in development before these repositories were available and for the longest time I tried to avoid them to save me time from converting the game over, when it's actually costing me time. So I'm converting Prism into a repository project in order to later save in development time. I have other developers (With a lot more free time) helping me make the transfer.
>It will be much easier to add new content to the game and get a clear picture where everything in the game stands. Prism in it's current state contains a lot of undocumented (and badly made) assembly I've written throughout the years. Trying to find a function I wrote 5 years ago takes longer to find (and understand) than just having an appropriately named and commented function for me to look at and change. This will greatly reduce the amount of debugging time and help me update my functions to run more efficiently..
>With this transfer, I think Prism will use a base of Crystal instead of Gold. There's some things in Crystal that I'd like to incorporate into Prism.
>I believe doing it this way will ensure that Prism gets out. With the way my current life is going (having little time to work on Prism because of work and travel), it would take way too long to keep working on it with mostly hex by myself.

How do you address concerns that these four types in particular seem redundant considering the existence of flying, grass, and dark? I could possibly see gas working for a few pokemon, but those pokemon are almost all a poison type/second type.

So I perfected Route 1 and made some edits to Viridian to fit in the entrance to this map, what I'm wondering is what I'm missing here. Before you reply, yes I am going to add grass, NPCs, and trainers.
Viridian Lake is a fishing village sort of offshoot of Viridian proper. There will be waters-edge Pokémon here and about three low level trainers. Considering making a starter pokemon a unique encounter in the upper left, or perhaps a water-stone.
Which brings me to another question-in a catch 'em all hack, where do main series starters fit in? I'm waffling constantly with them-in my demo (which this is a whole project reboot of utilizing what I learned and feedback from it as well as a clearer direction) I used Spheal, Mareep, and Larvitar. None of those are particularly equal tier, and picking one assured a loss in the first battle. Now considering Beldum, Dratini, and Larvitar instead-pseudos from each generation present in this hack. Also considering just leaving the starters as normal with the other 2 gen starters as special encounters (I hate giveaway pokemon)
Personally, I'm fairly satisfied with the map and think my skills are improving-it's got points of interest, it's not too extremely big, it's got character and purpose, it doesn't have an empty feeling, it's got something to get and something to take, trainers to challenge (again, to be implemented.)

Gets me every time.

HackMew literally found a .exe of gas (the gnu assembler) one day and named it "HackMew Assembler". Naturally, gas has all sorts of useful directives that he didn't know about and no one bothered to ever look up, since they took his word for it that he just wrote an assembler out of thin air.

http://ftp.gnu.org/old-gnu/Manuals/gas-2.9.1/html_chapter/as_7.html

Macros and constants in particular are really handy. Gas could have easily replaced all the script editors out there. People still put down #raws and stuff in pksv. It's surreal. It's easy to conclude that if not for HackMew people might have caught on to this stuff years earlier. But this type of thing has happened so many times that I feel like people want things to be difficult.
>>
>>25762167
>I feel like people want things to be difficult.
There seems to be some almost clandestine effort among the old guard for newer hackers to figure it out themselves, to guard the secrets of hacking so as not to diminish the craft. It's frustrating as hell too if you're not versed in any programming or scripting terminology at all going in, but thank God some people have seen fit to create tools for things like mapping and trainers at least.
There are tutorials for scripting, sure-but why nobody has ever put together a full manual with tons of known pre-fab scripts? It'd make it super accessible... And maybe then someone would shit out a good hack with a good story.

Working on a game in essentials and have a bit done so far. Looking for ideas and critique. Idea is a game where Pokemon's types are heavily influenced by their environment. There will be a secondary forest, hurricane struck marsh, polluted forest, and so on. I want there to be nearly every type combo in the game, which no more than 2 families of Pokemon with the same typing. There will be about 200 retyped Pokemon, and 100 left unchanged. Retyped Pokemon will be re-sprited accordingly. Let me know any ideas you have, such as the following:

Abilities and Moves
Puzzles and Mapping
Storyline and Characters

So far I have the typings figured out for all the Pokemon. I have the rival and gym leaders plotted out as well

Starters are:
Abra (Fire, Fire/Steel Alakazam)
Lillipup (Grass, Grass/Ground Stoutland)
Goomy (Water, Water/Ice Goodra)

The rival is an old man, who has never traveled and finally wants to begin an adventure. Lifelong companion Pokemon, Persian, is too old for battle (so he must pick a starter), but he wants to take it on the adventure it never received. Regards you with respect and wants to learn from you and cooperate. He is old and wise, and needs a strong team to get him though difficult routes, so his team will prove itself in battle.

Pic is the starting town.
>>

I saw your other thread; it looks neat. Reminds me of delta pokemon from the TCG

>>
>>25763887
I love this idea, and I absolutely love that idea for the rival. Also, with the type-influenced-by-environment idea, I'm expecting some fun with what constitutes "tall grass" in all this- for example, an electric and electric/steel area, or a poison area, near a city with "trash" as tall grass.

That being said, I think I would like to see a few NPCs in this town before I judge it. That, and I'm not exactly pleased with the tall grass, but I'm grasstistic so that's not a surprise. (I much prefer neat, large areas of grass like in the canon games to the much-more-popular-in-hackgames small, more random and "natural-looking" with huge quote marks areas of tall grass, and lone tiles of tall grass like that in the left house's backyard really set off my grasstism.)

Yea, I'm going to make lots of new tilesets. Here's the first route, is the grass acceptable or would you suggest having it more contained?

I have an idea for HMs I'm not entirely sure how to implement. There are only 4 HMs, Floral Raze, Earthly Strength, Wind Glider and Water Strider. Instead of them doing single things, they can do several. For instance, Earthly Stregnth does strength, rock smash/climb, plus new stuff, like climbing into stone temples. Water Strider does dive, surf, waterfall, plus you can use it on water wells to heal team, or on wishing wells to get shiny objects.
>>
>>25763887
I don't like the idea of retyped Pokemon, but I could look past that if the game is good enough. The rival idea is really good. Keep us updated.
>>
>>25762849
I'm re-"typing" trainers-stock images but different names and team pools; so Fisherman would have 1 water mono, two dual type water, and a grass, a member of the Fire Clan trainer (replacing Kindlers) would have a Zubat, a ground and/or rock type, and a fire type-all part of the cave habitat family, all useful for spelunking. On R1 you have a Trainer that carries a starter and two common to the route, a Rancher carrying a male and female Nidoran, and a Young Scholar (replacing schoolboy) carrying I forgot. Nobody should carry a Pokemon that doesn't fit their heritage, background, lifestyle, or home unless they're a badass traveler.
>>
>>25764485
I was in that thread. I remember suggesting that you rearrange the grass so it blocks the trainer's path.

And no, it looks perfect. Then again, it's larger so you have more room to run around in, so it's less of an issue.
>>
Does anyone have the code for Firered which makes the player face the trainer it's currently engaging in battle? The attachments don't work on PC.
>>
>>25764485
Multiuse HMs has a big issue tied to them: relevance in battle.

Say, for instance, Floral Raze is an early get, as I believe it's a standin for Cut as well as other HMs. And say you're halfway through the game. Floral Raze, which you learned near the beginning, is now pretty much irrelevant in battle as MUCH better moves exist.

And then you get badge permission to use Floral Raze to light up caves.

What would be better, in my opinion, is upgradeable HMs. Say you had three HMs, Cut, Ignite, and Immolate.

Cut is self-explanatory destroying trees run of the mill first HM, Ignite adds Flash functionality as well, and Immolate can, say, burn holes in marked walls to reveal secret doors.

All three of them keep previous functionality, and they have the added bonus of being better than each other in battle- for instance, Ignite does more damage and can cause a burn, and Immolate ends up an endgame move.

>>

>>

>>
>>25765199
Replace G3HS's .ini file with the one included in the rom base download, then go to the tab with the types and select fairy from the drop down menu.
>>
>>25764795
How would I go about upgrading them? Would it be coded essentially like a move tutor?
>>
>>25765824
It'd essentially be an entirely different move. However, in my previous example, Cut would ONLY be able to cut trees, while Ignite would be able to "cut" trees as well as light up caves, and Immolate would do all three.

Basically a functional upgrade.

And yes, this is assuming you can forget HMs normally, or at least replace an HM move with an upgraded version.
>>
>>25765999
I'll try doing something like that then. I was actually trying to figure out how to make the cut one viable last game without being op early. The typings of the HMs where going to be bug, fighting, flying, and water respectfully. I also thought of having Pokemon with the ability Explorer, which would boost the power of HM moves. Between the many uses per HM and competitive viability, maybe they'd be a bit less hated.

I want the game to be very focused on exploration. Many overlooked tilesets will have hidden functionality. I birdhouse in a garden can have the wind HM used on it to get EV feathers daily. Big flowers can be cut for medical herbs. I just really want to showcase the "hidden" aspect of HMs and surprise the player with unorthodox puzzles and hidden passages.
>>
>>25766138
Well, multiple moves with the same HM functionality would definitely work for that. The early Cut being weak but later Cut-like moves being more powerful. Things like that.
>>
>>25766240
Sounds good then. Probably silly question, but can you change the direction of tiles? Trying to find upward facing chairs and there's none in the default indoor tileset.

If there's an event in his way, you'll want to throw on 'Through ON' at the start of the move route so he can walk over anything in his path.

If you mean you want to have him move forward when the player hits a certain tile (like he's walking towards the player) then make another event, have it be Player Touch, and make the move route select his event then continue the rest of it.

What game are you referring to in the latter part? There are plenty of ROMhacks that do the same, whether they're good or not is a different question. Though assuming it's an Essentials game it's not much of a question.

I think both ROMs and Essentials has there ups and downs. I glad Essentials exists as it allows for a greater scope of people to make games. The battle screens and the way they display text aren't anything like GS. The overworld actually doesn't bug me because it sticks to 160x144, and while it does use 1x1 tile placement instead of 2x2, you can easily expand the number of tiles in Crystal to 256 and get the same result as long as you don't go full retard in said mapmaking in Essentials. Though it does trigger my autism that the grid is misaligned and you get two halves of a tile on the left and right ends instead of fitting exactly ten tiles without cutoff but that's not enough of a reason to trash the engine compared to other things.

>>25776635
I can't even call that a strawman because you have to craft a strawman. That's just a pile of straw. And nobody dislikes the disassemblies, almost all Gen 1 and Gen 2 hacks are made with them and the only ones that aren't these days are usually in-development hacks that have been in development for a long time.

Though when the Gen 3 disassembly becomes useable I could see people clinging to traditional hacking just because they're likely too used to the really simple hacking tools and don't want to move to something new.

And before you go "just like hackfags don't want to move to Essentials :^)))" it's different because Essentials is shit as previously stated.

>>
>>25776866
Nobody said Brown doesn't have edgy moments like >>25759115

You can have games that break the conventions of the series without being edgy.

It just happens to be that a lot of fangames, traditionally structured or not, are edgy.
>>
>>25776866
Edgy isn't synonymous with bad
Edgy is just very often bad
Most fan games don't significantly change gameplay, so the main difference where they are judged is their writing and story progression, which is very often mediocre and indeed "edgy", including things like excessive swearing, "grimdark" plots, and angsty/brooding/cookie-cutter "badass" characters.
>>
All right, this memetastic essentials VS hacking debate has gone on long enough, let's toss around some other discussion. Like, say, ideas for a game?

One of the ideas I had was Fallout+Pokemon. Say, one of the evil teams on some remote region succeeded in killing a whole lot of rather important-for-the-balance-of-the-planet Legendaries, causing the world to go into complete chaos as plants dried up, oceans rose and fell in flux, storms ravaged the skies, and eventually, deadly radiation from spatial rifts killed a whole lot of people. Many ended up in underground vaults, most situated inside gym or lab buildings.

You are ______, a 10 year old boy that a researcher, a descendant of Gary Oak himself, sends on a fateful mission outside. You complete your mission, but he doesn't let you back in for fear of radiation contamination. And then you find something that might bring back the world as we know it...

...the Fossil Reviver Machine on Cinnabar Peninsula, which used to be Cinnabar Island many, many, many years ago.

Thoughts?
>>
>>25776905
>random NPC nonsense = edgy moments
You have no idea what edgy means, do you?

Edgy doesn't objectively mean spewing around talk of death and darkness. By simply not being a traditionally structured game, the fangame can already be considered edgy. Adding a zillion new types is edgy.

>>25776946
I know that. I just find it ridiculous how people use "edgy" to describe any game that they don't like. To the point where anything violent, no matter how appropriate it is seen as edgy.

>>25776976
Here's a better idea: Let's stop talking about potentially cool ideas, and just fucking make them. Who cares if it's dumb or not? Make a short, two hour minor-game and see how people react. If they don't like it, better luck next time.
>>
>>25777009
>Edgy doesn't objectively mean spewing around talk of death and darkness.

Yes it does.

>By simply not being a traditionally structured game, the fangame can already be considered edgy. Adding a zillion new types is edgy.

>>
>>25776976
Your idea isn't beyond salvaging, but...
>you're a 10 year old boy... you gotta beat the evil team... references to canon games
Fuck all that noise. Every fangame is about a damn 10 year old on an adventure. Bring something new to the table.

What if you're a young adult who wants to make a huge breakthrough in a world where everybody lives just to survive.
Or maybe you're an ex-con who was caught and exalted to the wastelands.

Goodness, did somebody learn a new word?

Pokemon Brown introduced several types. Off the top of my head there was Sound, Tri, and I think Cyber. I think there's more, but I haven't touched Pokemon Brown since 2012 so maybe he took them out, maybe he added more. I wouldn't know. It's not the same as praising Satan's name, but it's edgy nonetheless.

>Edgy doesn't objectively mean spewing around talk of death and darkness.

You're pretending to sound like an idiot to make the side you disagree with sound like idiots, that's strawmanning.

Just like "oh people only like ROMhacking because it's obtuse!" is making strawmen of people who don't care about your Essentials fangame.

Though I'm sure you'll pull out a dictionary definition that disagrees.

That doesn't make a lick of sense. Or are you accusing me of being a ROMfag posing as a butthurt Essentialsfag?

Because in all honesty, I'm neither. I'd rather just make a fangame from scratch. RPG Maker is just more versatile than ROMhacking. At least with RPG Maker you can legally sell your product. Although I doubt an Essentials fangame would be sell-able no matter how much you change.

RPG Maker has a ton of great potential. You guys are missing out if all you're using is Essentials and XP.

I recommend everyone buy/pirate VX whenever they get the chance and study ruby script.

And yes. I get it, anon. You know what a strawman is. I know what a strawman is. Everyone who graduated highschool knows what a strawman is.

The "Dark-Type Gym masquerading as a Fighting-Type Gym" idea from a few weeks ago is my favorite
>>
Hey, I'm getting back into ROMhacking after being away for quite a while, and I remember using the following tools:
>what I think might have been pksv-ui as I remember bits and pieces of the scripting language such as "lock, faceplayer", but I don't remember a UI, just using notepad and compiling from files
>Advancemap
>unlz-gba
>Advancetext when I wanted to simply edit the text from, say, the beginning of the game
>advancestarter
>YAPE
>Advance Trainer
>Overworld Editor-Rebirth Edition
And a bunch of other tools I can't think of right now. Unfortunately, I've lost the folder with all my hacktools in it to the sands of time (read: it's on an old, abandoned PC I don't have in the house anymore), so I can't actually go back and check.

First off, how much better is XSE compared to that old version of pksv, or the new version? And how good is that new version?

Second, are there better versions of tools like unlz-gba, YAPE, and OE-RE out there now? Because they're nowhere in the pastebin.

And third... the pastebin probably needs updating anyways. The link to get XSE doesn't work and AdvanceMap is already in a higher version than what's in the pastebin.

Currently looking into ways to either prohibit certain types of moves/items being used in gyms, or putting timers on battles to make them more challenging.

So far only have one real idea for an Electric-type Gym leader who's a security guard, his gym will either involve trying to avoid all his gym apprentices to get to his room at the end, or trying to find keys scattered around his gym to open up his room with several of the items you can find being disguised Voltorb.
>>
>>25777337
What wide, radical statements have I said regarding ROMhacking as a whole? That ROMhacks are just as edgy as Essentials games?

Boo fucking hoo.

Newsflash: They are. And that isn't a bad thing just because the word has negative connotations on /vp/.

If you can point to the strawmen I've apparently set up, that would help too. Because I don't remember making any sort of post that would imply that ROMfags like hacking because it's obtuse. I may have said Essentials is more versatile, but I don't recall downtalking ROMhacking in any of my posts. I'm looking at our argument tree and for the life of me I cannot find anything that can be construed as a strawman towards ROMhacking. Unless you actually thought the stuff I mentioned about Pokemon Brown were towards all ROMhacks. But surely you can't be that stupid.

Also I'm not an Essentialsfag. I'm not even working on a fangame. I don't know where you got that assumption from. There are more than two programs to make a game with, if you didn't know.
>>
>>25777434

>>
>>25777385
Sounds like you've missed a lot, I'd suggest taking a look through Pokecommunity's research and development forum at some point. As for those tools:
>pksv
XSE is old and has a few outdated features, but it's still better than pksv and perfectly usable.
>Advance Map
Use 1.92 for now, 1.95 is a buggy mess that will never be fixed. There's a new map editor in the works that looks much better: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=366130
>Yape
Only good if you don't want new Pokemon, moves, or abilities. There are lots of new options for Pokemon editing, with the best ones being PGE, G3HS, and G3T. Same goes for A-Trainer, use Hopeless Trainer Editor instead.
OW-RE is still fine, but you can use NSE as a more recent alternative. As for A-Text and A-Starter, don't bother; XSE and a hex editor can do everything they do better.

So I decided to do some filler work regarding my Crystal hack, just changing some Pokémon distribution to add some Pokémon that appear in Gold and/or Silver but not Crystal, and I want some feedback on how exactly to implement dealing with conflicting exclusives.

To give an example, Growlithe appears in Gold and Crystal while Vulpix appears in Silver. Should I have both Growlithe and Vulpix appear on the same routes, or should I have one appear on some routes and the other on different routes (e.g. Growlithe appears on Route 36 but Vulpix appears on Route 37)?
>>
>>25779188
Different routes, definitely. More variation between routes is better than cramming every mon into every route, and will make catching 'em all, EV training and Nuzlocking more fun.

>What if you're a young adult who wants to make a huge breakthrough in a world where everybody lives just to survive.
Not that Anon, but that's literally my idea in the works right now.
I was thinking of a world where an entire region has gone dry somehow, and you and a few other people are brave enough to stand up to Team Rocket, who has the region in control with Mewtwo.
Team Rocket has the only reliable water source as well.
The problem I'm having is mapping. Deserts, upon deserts, although I have ideas for a few areas and one area has already been mapped (TR's mountain base, in the middle of the region).
A few special areas I've come up with are:
Oasis where you can catch more than just rock/ground types.
Ice Cave where you can catch ice types.
And some more I haven't come up with yet.

There will be some shady people selling Pokemon for (insert survival item here) and it's up to you if you want to trust them or not.
These people will be all around the region.

cont.

The game starts you off in a house, where your character lives. There's not much to it, only a well outside the house.
Why your character has lived here, and how long is not explained.

You decide yourself whether you want to go on an adventure or not. There's noone else here except a few Pokemon.
Oh, did I mention you already have a Pokemon upon start? Which one, I'll keep secret for now.
Going down to the first Route, not anything special here. Just wild Rock/ground types as stated previously.
Once you get through the Route, you're met with the first Town in the region. This Town is just a small hideout for a few people, and has not yet been occupied by Team Rocket. There will probably be a salesman and a place to heal, and maybe a sidequest or two, which I haven't come up with yet.
From here on out, the player has the option to either go South or West. The Southern Route leads to another small village.
The Western Route leads to a big City which has indeed been occupied by Team Rocket.
You will meet the first NPC to journey with you here.
Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention that you will meet a total of 4 People that will accompany you on your travels (Not rivals per se) How you interact with these people is the Player's decision and may change a few things.
Later on in the game you find an old, abandoned house, which you then make your safehouse. A reliable healing station of sorts.

And that's all I've got planned out for now. Currently working on the very base.

I tried to make this sound the least "edgy" I could, but the final product (which will take a looong time) may have a few moments Anons here would conside edgy.
Let me know what you think, and come up with other special areas exclusive to Deserts/Mountains too, where you can catch other typed Pokes.
>>
>>25779221
That's a good reasoning.

Also I'm noticing Crystal has some pretty shitty selection in some routes. Just look at Route 43. In GS, in the morning you can get Mareep/Flaafy, Girafarig, and Venonat (and Pidgeotto). That's pretty good.

In Crystal, however, the morning selection (just chose morning since it has a slightly more diverse selection along with night) consists of:

>Pidgeotto
>Sentret
>Farfetch'd (only based one)
>Furret
>Raticate

That's all first-route trash, just some of it evolved. At night you can get Venonat at least but they neutered the route for the sake of making Mareep and Girafarig exclusive to GS.

I'm not a fan.

Mainly because of the concept getting in the way of the gameplay.

I get what you're doing- like Cycling Road from Hoenn- but you're missing a key aspect of it.

Obstacles.

There needs to be something the player does besides "hurr get from one place to the other."

This is exactly why all trainer battles being optional and grass on the side of the road doesn't work. You need those trainers to be up in the player's business, and that grass to be underneath their feet.

Looking good is one thing, but don't sacrifice game design for it.

I am >>25748723. I am FSBS.
Since the fire starters are the best starters (not something I literally believe), I am considering making the starters all the fire starters-Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic... but that's kind of stupid. Although I could do 3 different versions-Triple Fire Red, Three Leaf Green, Tri-Aqua Blue with only changes to starters, but that's a novelty.
You say I could make it to where the player could pick up their starter at the Nido Ranch. I love Nidoran/ino/king myself. It's the quintessential pokemon, really. I've conceived a broader idea for Nidos and the Nido Ranch though-see, the Route 1 Ranch is a breeding farm; the real ranching is done on a much bigger ranch somewhere to the east; I'm thinking that you pick up and egg there and it hatches into a special Nidoran with better stats than usual. I guess if I were to go with your idea, I'd have to make it to where the breedery give you the special Nido, and in that case you're stuck with either a Nido M or Nido F as a starter. I could call it Pokémon Nido Version. It'd be neato. Hell, Prof. Oak might have run out of Pokémon. Maybe you woke up late on the wrong day.
There are a ton of possibilities opened up by sharing things online from perspectives such as yours. It's a great idea. To be honest I'm not that good at scripting. I tried making a basic movement and hidesprite script yesterday. The NPC disappeared as soon as the tile activated. Gonna have to overhaul that entire map (thankfully it's an interior) and rescript it-this time with waitmovement.
>>
>>25780750
>>25780567
Not the OP of that map, but my project runs a similar thing-a unified road connecting all towns. However, with help from /heg/, I've realized that yes, you must have some sort of forced battling-but you can also keep the road. As seen here >>25748723 you can take the road-but you'll have to face trainers. Or you could take the grass, but you'll be dealing with wild encounters. The way home is much easier, but it only goes one way.
Keep the road, but make it to where the people on it are trainers, and you could even make a scripting tile occasionally where a wild pokemon battle triggers directly on the road. The road isn't an artificial linear safe zone for the player, it's another element of the game with its own surprises and tricks. Make it that way.

Make it a higher level or evolved form of a pokemon native to the road/route; so if you have level 4-6 Pidgeys, make it a level 9 Pidgey; if you have level 16-18 Sandshrews on the side of the road, script it as a level 22 Sandslash.
You'll need to script it appropriately. Pretty sure it's a regular wildbattle without hide/showsprite or cry commands.

All right, so turns out I HADN'T used Pksv, I'd used Pokescript, and I now remember that being a conscious choice over XSE back in the day. XSE is definitely missing features compared to Pokescript (most noteably, the ability to automatically find free data to compile into), but can't edit existing scripts like XSE can (which I'm having trouble finding a tutorial for) and has a much worse interface (if you can call Notepad an "interface").

It's going to take a while for me to wrap my head around how to find pointers to use and whatnot, but I'm gonna go ahead and whine a bit, asking for a new, up-to-date scripting program that combines the good things about not just XSE, but also Pokescript and Advance Text (automatically locating free space for you and being able to search for and edit already-in-game scripts, respectively)

Route 22 First Draft jpg.jpg
248KB, 768x544px
Expanded Route 22 by 10 down to allow more freedom to screw with it. Shrubs are events, it's been my experience that moving them is a bad idea so I built around. Might add a trainer because I don't know what else to do with it; I was going to stick a Fire Cave entrance somewhere here but since that's supposed to run under between Pewter/Mt. Moon I'm not going to.
Hows it look?
>>
>>25782055
It's okay. Hard to do anything interesting with such a short route that's just a glorified gate.
>>
>>25782055
The route looks weird around those shrubs, like the road's been cut off. What are they there for anyways? I don't remember anything of the sort in FR/LG.
>>
>>25783247

>>
>>25782055
Don't forget to clean up those corner tiles in the mountain to the right of the gate.

>>25783336
If you played Kanto you should be able to figure out that the shrubs are marking the event tiles for the Rival battle on that route, to mark them out to the mapper as a reminder to alter or remove them at a later time.
>>
>>25783394
Oh yeah. Now it makes sense.
>>
>>25783206
Tell me about it. I looked ahead to 23, or: A Series of Badge Checkpoints. Think I'm going to straight up turn that shit into a town and have a single guard at Indigo Plateau to check all the badge flags.
>>25783394
Yeah, it's all cleaned up now with movement permissions and encounters. WILD MAN, Spearow, Rattatta remain out of the original encounters while welcoming Zigzagoon and Nidos in a lesser capacity alongside a 5% encounter chance for Phanpy and Teddiursa. I'm trying to make maps have some overlap in regards to encounters so it feels more organic.
>>
>>25783567
>turn that shit into a town
Maybe model it after Blackthorn, hilly town on the side of a mountain, with the opening to Victory Road at the highest point.
>>
>>25780797
The rocky area with the Gym looks out of place. Could you replace the rocks with simple ledges to achieve the "Gym on a height" thing without all that rock?
>>25782055
The pathways between the rocks are too narrow. Also, what's the incentive for players to go into that grass? It's inconvenient.
>>
>>25784012
This. There's zero reason for the players to take the alternate route to the grass, and even less reason to go down the ledges.
>>
>>25784012
>>25784191
i assume the one square down the ledge without grass would have an item ball on it
but who knows
>>
>>25784012
The incentive is to grind and catch pokemon, why does everyone act as if people avoid grass if it's not forced? Do people actually do that? Do people not like to explore? I'll take your criticism into account anyways and look into the map again tomorrow.
As for Viridian, ledges don't work as well as mountain tiles for achieving that power and authority effect Gyms should have. I've often been criticized for my reliance on mountains over ledges but I feel ledges don't provide a drastic enough rise.

Finally seeing a bit of headway. I have my first route and 2 cities completed. All Pokemon are retyped accordingly, and starting to edit the sprites. Had a lucky encounter right off the bat, so I'm optimistic about this project.

Shown here is a Grass/Fire Oddish. Pidgey, like many others, will retain its type, but I will be going in a recoloring a few shinies.

What's your opinion on trainers that are on the first route? Should they be entirely optional? Should the dev make sure that potions are available for purchase if they do this?

http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?p=9186306#post9186306

So Jagold released a new beta for Broken Timeline, the rebooted beta with no relation to the awful five-regions beta.

I swear I cannot tell if this is an April Fools' joke or not.

Everything in the hack seems to check out, there are no glitches that I've run into, the new features he's mentioned working on are there, there's no clue on where to go until you talk to every trainer five times to activate all the right scripts but that's normal for Ruby Destiny, it seems legit and probably more polished than any of his past hacks.

But every NPC seems to have 50+ lines of dialogue when you talk to them. I have never had to mash A in a ROMhack as much as I have in this beta. This is what makes me think it's an April Fools' joke, but then again, it's Jagold, maybe he got it in his head that good hacks have lots of dialogue and went full retard with it.

>Stock phrases with "God" replaced by "Arceus"
When will people stop doing that shit
99% of the time the game doesn't even take place in Sinnoh
>>
>>25791855
The funny thing is Jagold never used stock "Arceus" phrases like this in his earlier hacks. He used it a lot in the old Broken Timeline beta though.

So, this hack is told through the framing device of the player telling a story to an unknown person (this is also words words words). From the snippet in pic related, we're apparently telling this story to one of the transformed humans in Rescue Rangers, whichever one I'm not sure.
>>
>>25791944
>receive an Exp. Share from someone
>don't look at it
>catch a couple Fakemon to check out its typing, etc. (by the way the Fakemon in this game are just as bad as in LoG, if sprited better)
>defeat a trainer
>Eevee gained 28 EXP. points!
>Furruny gained 28 EXP. points!
>Chirpich gained 28 EXP. points!
>Lameet gained 28 EXP. points!

So apparently this game has the Exp. Share from Gen 6, as in it's a key item. It also displays every single Pokémon gaining the points like in Gen 1. And it CAN'T BE TURNED OFF. You can deposit it, but this hack ALSO doesn't let you go to a PC without spending the night in an Inn (which replaces Pokémon Centers), which costs money.

"Pick a card."
>choose left, mid or right card
>One card forces a trainer battle ahead
>Another card lets you pass freely on to the other room/section
>The last card forces an unescapable wild battle or whatever the hell
>>
>>25795202
Layout similar to Norman's Gym or the Battle Pike. Tarot cards lay in front of each door. The trainer behind the door has a team that reflects that arcana (i.e. Death, upright, has a team centered around using moves like Memento and Healing Wish. Tower upside-down has a team focused on using Explosion and Selfdestruct. Strength upright is entirely physical).

For extra fun make the tarot cards randomized.

Got some progress on sprites started. Getting the easy ones out of the way first. Pokemon shown:
Oddish: Grass/Fire
Cubone: Fairy/Ground (Midas touch)
Zizzagoon: Ground/Electric
Shroomish: Grass/Psychic (Glowing mushroom)
Azurill: Water/Electric
Bulbasaur: Bug (Lucky charms)
Charmander: Ice
Vulpix: Fire/Poison

Standart Pokemon adventure, villains are some kind of "human supremacist" who want to give to Pokemon a wild beast status and lock them in captivity.
Also killing Arceus because muh Nietzsche killing God and prove how humans are more powerful than Pokemon.
They also have a villain team counterpart who are Sweden Yes mode with Pokemon, giving them more rights than humans and worshipping legendary Pokemon.

I think the Human supremacist angle has merit, as do the Kanto Yes team. I think you should make it a commentary on pokefags and waifufreaks and shit. That'd be cool. Looks like you're doing it in RPG maker. That's cool too. My machine is too slow for that, which blows but whatever. Best of luck!
