All of the series' have completely new casts of characters and antagonists but you can start with Digimon Adventure which is the first series and then you can move on to Adventure 2 which is sort of a continuation of the first series since it includes older versions of the orginal protagonists but focuses on a new cast of protagonists. After that it'll be Tamers, Frontier, Data Squad (or Savers if you watch subbed), Fusion (or Xros Wars if you watch subbed), and by the time you finish those Adventure Tri (the latest "series" that's told in 6 movie long episodes) should be completed.

Dark Area normally gets combined with nightmare soldiers, Unkown with metal empire and/or nightmare Soldiers depending on the digimon.

each also has an associated element: Dragon's Roar is fire, Jungle troopers is electric, Deep savers is ice, Nightmare soliders is darkness, virus busters is light, metal empire is machine, Wind guardians is wind, nature spirits is earth.

You can also split it down further along the lines the Warrior 10 are: http://wikimon.net/Warrior_Ten , which subdivides it further (ex: jungle troopers is now split into plant digimon with wood element, and insect digimon with electric element. Others are split and combined, like Ore digimon with earth element, which is sorta split from both metal empire and machine digimon). Though beast digimon = light isn't really seen outside of this period, that's usually asociated with fair and angel digimon even if you go more specifically then field.

There's also digimon types (http://wikimon.net/Type), but those are more akin to species names in pokemon more then anything else, though they are shared more often then species names are.

Also, it's worth noting unlike in pokemon, evolutions, fields atttributes (which I forgot to mention) and sometimes but not usually types can vary from medium to medium.

I sorta got into this with "unkown and dark area digimon are usually just merged with nightmare soldiers", but it's actually quite common with everything but types: go search any random digimon on wikimon and chances are it will be listed in more then one field and having dozens of evolution depending on the specific game, anime adaption, or card.

This shot always reminds me of Evangelion.

These movies had fantastic animation.

So I watched a playthrough of Cyber Sleuth to see what the fuss was, and it does have an interesting story at least, although it does tend to drag. It has the same system as Dawn/Dusk, but it's made less annoying by the encounter rate being manageable and the battles are a lot faster. The dungeons also aren't so complicated you'll get lost in them, at least not until some of the later ones. I can't tell how grindy it is, though. I didn't think Dawn/Dusk was grindy, either, until I played it myself and felt how slow it is to become powerful enough to do anything. It doesn't look that bad to begin with, but later on, I don't know because they cut out long grinding sequences. I'm also concerned about the later bosses, since I don't know if regular digimon can fight them, they seemed way too powerful. That doesn't seem like good design if it forces you to get more powerful digimon, although they DO compensate by giving you more than enough time to grind for them should you so desire. Other than that, all of the well known digis are available right away and you can pretty much get what you want. I suppose I don't know unless I play it myself, but I'd only like to know if it is super grindy.

Well, I don't know. There's a flipping pile of digis that are important in some way or other, and a lot of them are stronger than normal, but I'm no longer sure if that makes them "legendary". It definitely does for the obnoxiously powerful ones, but I'm not sure about the rest.
