Realism is hard to do right with natively cartoon styles, but at least the designers of Pokkén had a clear vision and knew what they were doing. Battle revolution didn't know if it wanted to be cartoony or realistic, so we ended up with simple cartoony models rendered with somewhat realistic lighting and shaders. The plastic looking tree on Torterra was horrible, among other things.

The Pokemon themselves look as they always did, they arent some edgy abominations you can sometimes see on the "Pokemon in real life" fan artworks. The realistic textures though are a complete novelity (pic somewhat related) I can see why some people might be turned off by them.
