If you are going to play a comprtitive game, you most certainly will play to win. (Yes, it is a game but even this childrens game has a goal).
If there are "superior" mons it is only logical that the competitive gameplay focuses only in those.
Picking any "inferior" mons is practically chosing to lose unless you come up with some awesome strategy or a personalized strategy for each team you are facing, which I think is very possible.

Accelgor is honestly one of the coolest Pokemon to come out of Gen 5. I loved Alder's team in general. I think I just loved Alder.
