Most up to date games out are Oras if you want to catch them all the only games you need are the four gen six games.
However if you want a game with a lot of content in general go with black and white 2 anything below that isn't really necessary to play for anything other than the story but those are the games you can get the most out of.

X/Y. The single player is fun to go through, if a bit easy, and you have a full representation of Pokémon from all regions. You also have full online features, and you can trade and battle with ORAS too.

The older DS games are fun, and they'll probably be mentioned here plenty of times. But for your first Pokémon game in a while, I can't recommend X/Y enough.

Gen 3 is my favorite (even with his flaws), but... FRLG is the worst remake that anyone can imagine.

This guy missed a lot of great things from each Pokemon generation. Don't throw that trash on his face, as the first thing.
In my opinion, all the Pokemon games (classic, no spinoffs) are, in the worst case, good.
So, every gaame, every generation is a good choice. But FRLG is the worst decision...
