In the new series, Ash travels with a Cubchoo, which is then treated as a forced mascot a la Oshawott/Piplup, complete with a running gag involving it's snotcicle. Don't know what the gag would be, but it relies on gross-out humor. It also happens at least once an episode. However, the Cubchoo belongs to Swanna Girl, who now travels with Ash and Serena (into the new region), gaining a name, a character and a success story.

Definitely, but I prefer BW2's to both. Good balance between plot and freedom. I despised how much BW railroads you throughout the whole game, Unova is a straight line without even side towns between the first gym and the league. And Team Plasma shows up like clockwork without almost ever being interesting.

I actually didn't mind Hoenn's water routes for this very reason. Team Magma (I first played Ruby) told me they were moving out to sea, but wouldn't tell me where, and they challenged me to find their next move in a wide-open sea. The novelty wore off after hoards of Tentacool and Wingull, but the idea of having to find your own way around a huge open area was cool to me.

Think about it this way: they are going to keep Trainer Customization for S/M because there is literally no reason not to, and that would lead to reasons for Serena to return with a new look. There's no reason to introduce new girls (even if the game protag is different from Serena) if the anime team only cares about the eye-candy appeal (which was cited in an interview), so they will likely keep the same girl who has a lot of character potential with a new design and voila.
