I've been expecting this since the "date?!" episode, and it's only become truer and more extreme as time goes on.

I actually told a friend of mine who doesn't even follow the show to at least keep track of what happens to this ship, because whether this thing arrives in port or sinks traumatically, either way there's gonna be a hell of a reaction out of some significant sector of the internet, across many, many websites.

Either way we're gonna see SOMEBODY put on a shit show, and I'll be glad that I lived to see it.

I don't have any solid numbers data to back me up on this (but I kinda want to read a study or something on this now), but it seems that shipping fandoms are a risk/reward kind of deal: they can bring in a considerable crowd to a show, but they tend to react to things in terms of extremes. Small bumps in either direction in the canon material has a tendency to create massive waves within the shipping part of the fandom before renormalizing to the same state as the non-shipping sector of the fandom.

It's why I compared shipping fandoms to nitroglycerin earlier. Especially with the writers and marketers pushing it so hard, both explicitly and implicitly, it'd be... rough, to say the least, if they kept on ramping the ship up the way they have been to date only to send it suddenly careening over the edge.
