Hello /vip/.

Judging from some of the OPs here, this seems as good as place as any to ask.

I've decided that I want to become a weeb after becoming obsessed with a handful of Nihon Falcom games lately, and because I'm turning 28 later this month, and things aren't looking up on the tfw no gf front, so I might as well go all the way at this point.

I've never watched a single anime or read manga in my life. I know of many of the more popular series out there like Naruto, DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, etc., but only in the sense that I'm aware of their existence.

Basically I want to know, where do I start? I was browsing Crunchyroll earlier and it was quite overwhelming. Is there a list or something I can start with? I'd also like to learn some of the lingo and verbiage, history, and anything else that comes along with the culture.

Serious post by the way. Thanks in advance.

Attack on Titan is really good. Sword Art Online is good also.

Okay OP. They call me the AniGod and the Otaking as well as AoG. You might ask me anything you want to know about anime and I shall give you my wisdom.
>>
>>9998
op, i'm going to be 100% serious here: what kind of shit do you like

like you watch regular tv and movies and maybe read books and play games, right? what genres of stuff do you like? do you like serious things? do you like comedies? sci-fi? drama? action? do you like dumb fun or do you like to think?

asking "what anime should i watch" is like asking "what book should i read," we need more context or that's a worthless question.

You said you wanted to be a weeb. Well you've just got shown a New York Times best selling manga every volume since the beginning. You're not a weeb unless you like this series. Either give it up now or cut your teeth into the best manga ever written.
>>
>>10427
that series is shit
>>
>>9998
Start with the classics, like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and Black Lagoon

These are very western-styled Action-focused animes which should remind you of a blockbuster, but with an actual plot

Descend into more weeb-y shit like Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Shinsekai Yori, Shiki, and One-Punch Man. These are fantasy in nature, but they are very Japanese in terms of their social settings

If you have the interest, watch some artsy stuff like Kaiba, The Count of Monte Cristo-Gankutsuou, and Mononoke.

To become a degenerate, you will need to descend even further into the depths. Let's start with Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Spice and Wolf. These are emotionally focused, although Madoka has several action sequences. Spice and Wolf (II) is primarily an economics and relationship center.

Now, it's time for what is basically softcore porn. Shimoneta is a good one.

After you've completed all of that, remove all Western media from your life and only watch currently airing series.

Congrats, you are now a weeaboo.

Sorry Anon. I mean classics in terms of the action/western-styled cartoons.

not that dude but just because /a/ is sick of discussing something and shits on anyone who talks about it doesn't make it not good

Did Hiroshimoot lower the file size limit already? I have a big old chart I was gonna post, but it seems to be too big.

OP should start with the REAL classics.

Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Love hina, Girls Bravo and TLR.

Unless you're dead set on just watching anime you could go to /a/, find the One Page Thread and look for random interesting looking manga to read.

Sorry Anon. I tried to focus on transitioning from Western to Japanese-style media, because that's what the OP wanted.

If you have suggestions as to what OP should watch, maybe you could post them?

Although I don't recommend telling him to dive balls deep into momu for example.

Well, like I said, I've been obsessed with Falcom games lately. Ys, Trails in the Sky, but especially Trails of Cold Steel. So I guess I'm looking for something along those lines.

Also, I'm looking at some of the more popular series and there are a bunch of different versions (for lack of a better word) of each one. Do I always follow by release date?
>>
Yuyushiki, the threads on /a/ are always so much fun. It's about three girls in high school in the data processing club (aka the looking shit up on Wikipedia and talking about it club) and doing their thing. Pic related is Yuyushiki.

K-ON, nice and cute slice of life show about five girls that start a band.

Barakamon, comfy summer feel, and the whole thing is about the MC growing as a person and stopping himself from being a little PUSSY NIGGA. Also there's a kind of father-daughter dynamic going on with MC and island loli (before you assume anything, no, she isn't sexualized in any way whatsoever.)
>>
>>10721
Can you give us some examples for what you're looking at?

Things like .hack//sign are mostly chronological, but FMA:B was a complete remake of FMA, so we can't give you a good answer otherwise.
>>
OP!
Ebichu is a good gateway for anime since it's very crude and full of sexual humor that you will totally understand lol
>>
/a/ has a recommendations page on their wiki. Go look it up.
>>
Just watch K-On about twenty times, it's what I do
>>
>>10721
>Also, I'm looking at some of the more popular series and there are a bunch of different versions (for lack of a better word) of each one. Do I always follow by release date?
Not sure what you're talking about here, unless it's a case like Fullmetal Alchemist where the 2003 anime and 2009 one, Brotherhood, turn wildly different at a certain point because the earlier one was made while the manga was still ongoing.

If it's seasons you're talking about then obviously by release date. Some if not most anime name their seasons with a subtitle instead of "Season 2" or whatever.
>>
>>10751
That page is shit full of mainstream bullshit without actual good anime like Ebichu
>>
>>10721
Yes always follow release date. Those "versions" aren't actually different versions, they're seasons. In Japan, instead of having new seasons labeled as "(Show) Season 2" they're labeled as "(Show) DokiDoki!" and stuff like that.
>>
>>10721
If you like fantasy, Record of the Lodoss War is kinda the gold standard I guess.

There are also tons of sites meant to help with recommendations. Even if the userbase is retarded, they generally have stuff sorted by genre tags and the like.

Actually, .hack was one of the ones I was looking at. Sign, Legend of the Twilight, Gift, etc.

Then there's Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, etc. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, etc.

Do they follow different characters in the same universe, or what?
>>
>>10767
RAAAH IT'S HAMTARO
>>
>>10814
You can usually just look at wikipedia for this kind of thing bro
>>
>>10814
Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT are seasons 2 and 3 of Dragon Ball. As for GitS, some of those are remakes of the original show and some of them are new seasons.
>>
>>10721
i'm not good with fantasy genre, desu, but i'm sure other people will have some recs for you

idk, maybe toaru majutsu no index? ofc the anime's basically dead at this point, you'd have to go to the ln if you wanted to pick up after s2.

anyway, i'm out for now, later
>>
>>10830

Wait, so "seasons" last for damn near close to a decade? Does season mean the same thing in this context as it does when talking about western TV shows?

It depends entirely on the show.

For Dragon Ball, Z and GT are less like seasons and more like self-contained continuities, even though that's not really the right word either. You should still watch them in order.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is an example of a show that follows different characters in the same universe like you said.
Hidamari Sketch names its seasons like 365, Hoshimittsu, Honeycomb etc. and they're purely just seasons 2, 3 and 4 with a fancy name.

IT'S EBICHU REEEEEEE!
>>
>>10873
In the case of DB each of these would be more accurately called a series. This is a really long-running franchise.
In the usual context, a season is 12ish episodes/weeks.
>>

>>
>>10873
Seasons isn't a good word for it.

You probably shouldn't watch Dragonball, though. There are a few of these super long running shows (generally meant for young boys, called "shonen") and they're basically never worth the investment.
