I never played B-K as a kid so I don't have any nostalgia for it so that might be part of it. But even if this game is identical to B-K there's still the massive time gap between them. Even if B-K wouldn't be enjoyed if released as a new game today it was good in the context that it came out in. I think the issue is that trying to transplant that to today doesn't work and there are tons of ways you could do platforming today that isn't a nostalgia cash grab. People making platformers should try and breathe new air into the genre and not just remake the same shit that already came out years ago with a new coat of paint.

It looks like they took everything that went wrong with Banjo-Tooie, and made it worse.
Now, I think Banjo-Tooie is a great game, but it has a MAJOR fucking problem with the levels being too big. I don't mean in terms of contents, I mean too big spatially. You spend so much fucking time just running from place to place in order to get stuff done.

Yooka-Laylee ramps the problem up a fucking thousandfold. There are literally just gigantic empty rooms with NOTHING in them at all. They serve no purpose other than allowing them to say "LOOK, OUR LEVELS ARE E.V.E.N.B.I.G.G.E.R THAN TOOIE'S LEVELS!

Also, the main character's voice sucks, Talon Trot being on a fucking timer is retarded, and the whole game just feels soulless.

People should just fuck off with trying to make the levels as massive as possible and focus more on technical platforming. Make every level like those floating levels in Sunshine with difficult platforming.
