A rare sneak peak of Episode 48

Does anyone else think that the very first arc of Tamers was the best one? I felt the writing slowly declined in quality after the middle of the Deva arc, or rather, that the personality in it was diluted.

The first episodes make for a good conduit to the psychological vibe of the show. They're slow, character-focused and dry, coming closest to Lain's tone IMO which is a frequent praise of Tamers. Takato is still depicted as a goofy kid emulating things he saw on TV and the rest of the trio work very well as his foils before getting any real development. The horror subtext is much subtler than later in the show but it's also being actively contrasted to a real-world setting.

In comparison, I felt that the psychological/horror angle was either almost absent or done much more sloppily (the shitshow with Juri) for the remainder of the show, with the exception of episode 34.

No, I can't agree with that. You could maybe argue that the digital world was too bizarre to take seriously, but it is harsh and the show does not pull punches like with the circumstances of meramon's death or the fact that they were there for 5 real world months without any timeline compression.

It seems much nicer than it was because by this point the characters have toughned up and can take it in stride.
