While I don't think it would ever do anything so drastic, they definitely do their part in creating a walled garden so to speak, to keep people within the microsoft bubble. Why can't I spectate on Valve servers? Valve is such a fucking amateur company. Reading glassdoor.com reviews about it make me wonder how they are still in business.

If you're going for something like popularity you can also do those engagement ring things and golden wrenches

realistically, this game makes too much money for shutting down the servers to be a profitable move on valve's part. this could change due to a heavily anti-valve atmosphere among the community that would cause them to completely boycott valve and not give them any money, but gamers are terrible at boycotts so that will never happen. even then, people will still make community servers. this isn't like a bunch of other online only games where the main servers are all you have and if those are gone, the game dies. granted, community servers still take money to run, so if valve shuts it down it'll never be the same, but you'll always be able to play tf2 in some capacity.

TF2 has been played once a year at the Insomnia Gaming Festival for many years in a row, and i61 is just another chapter in that epic saga. Many of the finest airshots, headshots, and matches in TF2 history have taken place at an Insomnia LAN, and despite the doubters I expect this one to be no different. Day 1 will feature the Open and Invite group stages. In the Open groups, 8 winners from 8 groups of 4 will advance to the double-elimination playoffs with the Invite teams. Meanwhile the Invite teams will be playing in their own group stages which will determine their seedings going into the playoffs. After the group stages conclude, Friday night will feature round 1 of the best-of-three playoffs.
That's right folks, tomorrow is stuffed full of the best TF2 action since Rewind LAN, and you can catch it all of the EssentialsTF stream.

It was explained in one of the threads. Once you've been to LAN, it's nothing special, and it's pretty darn expensive to go to an international LAN without a really big prizepool. The general consensus is that they're all exhausted after the regular season + irl stuff, and that they just cannot make that big a commitment to TF2 anymore, nor should they be obligated to, because TF2's competitive scene does not bring in that much money.
