Doesn't it explain why you might like her for superficial reasons? This image even points out she's not actually any "brains" of the PT. What she's got going for her is simply put, extra scenes and more attention.
My confusion is that she has these traits, yet other girls have their own. Why then is Makoto so popular? Are her combination of traits just magically a perfect blend?
Or is it just because she gets enough attention that the player is, well, in a way convinced to think she's the best girl. I can't think of a better way to explain it. I don't want to say tricked, but it kind of feels that way. It's almost like propaganda to like Makoto.
She's portrayed as just perfect, really. She has all the traits. She can be cute and shy, but also fierce and commanding. It doesn't really make the most sense to be honest. Her behaviours in the Kaneshiro arc are quite different from her behaviours in the rest of the game. Did no Makotofag find that jarring?

I honestly think the pushing thing is crap. I played it, and I can remember a few scenes of Makoto getting that solo focus with Joker. But I also remember Futaba getting moments. They all do. And it's a small thing, in the length of the game. Like, she's not my favorite P5 girl by a long shot but I never felt bothered by it.

She's likely popular because people like her design, she's got the leather-clad biker look combined with a straight-forward beat-down fighting style and they liked her more serious attitude. Like, it doesn't have to be complex. Most people don't exactly write essays on what appeals to them about a girl. A lot of people play these games pretty casually.

This is essentially what I'm suggesting. I am suggesting that players aren't thinking and essentially "default" to Makoto. Hell, I did. I didn't like any of them enough so I just did her. I didn't know why myself. When you do that, you get asked "Who do you like the most"? You say "Makoto". You talk about her more, more and more until you create a stronger feeling for her simply from there. I think this might be it honestly. People start off with "yes she's the best I guess" and gradually like her more for no reason other than familiarity in talking about her. But not familiarity with her, at least not her character. This isn't a catch-all of course. People could have solely discussed her character critically. But this is the internet. We're more likely to post about the cute or that one thing she did.

Mary Sues came from old Star Trek Fan fictions. It was generally used for a character who showed up as a relative newcomer and yet for no reason the entire plot and everything in the universe would just revolve around the character. Not just like them being involved in some new story, but everything had to be about them directly because reasons. They did tend to be perfect, and any flaws they posses were often of the "not really a flaw at all" type, like "so beautiful it's a curse" crap. But not every character who is good at a lot of things is a Mary Sue.

Generally you can make an argument that the protagonists are Mary Sues, but this is more a thing that just has to happen in a video game, because if things didn't revolve around you, well it's pretty boring not doing anything because other characters do shit instead of you.

The thing is, Makoto largely just fills the role of exposition dumper. Since the protagonist can't talk that much, there's always a character who does this. Yosuke did it in 4 until Naoto came and took up that position. And other than Makoto and Futaba, I can't think of anyone who would really fill the role of general information dispenser.

Why do I like Makoto? I pretty much love everything about her, that's why she's my waifu. I love her design, short brown chestnut hair really gets me. Her voice both in Sub and Dub is fantastic and really fits her (though around here that's very debatable). But it's not her just aesthetics that won me over. I fell for her because of who she is. Makoto was eerily similar to how I was back in High school. I was a straight A student, involved in many honor clubs. But like Makoto, I never had many friends, I rarely did anything social. All I did was spend my time on schoolwork and playing video games in my free time and nothing else. I was always pushed around by my parents, I never really had a choice in many things, I constantly did what I was told. Seeing Makoto go through that was very relatable for me, I felt for her because I knew what it was like being in a position similar to that. I love her because she is my ideal girl personality wise. She is intelligent reserved girl who consistently demonstrates her amazing work ethic and her compassionate side throughout the game. Of all the girls I liked this the most because it feels like she would be your equal in a relationship, not just a lover or only somebody to rely on.

Yeah but Yosuke is the first character to join, and gets dumped on alot by the plot as a counter, while Naoto is the last, and thus has the shortest amount of time to matter and needs all the help she can get.

Makoto meanwhile shows up halfway and steals the thunder of basically everyone that comes before or after except for Futaba a little.

As for the her role in the game, even I will admit that she had a little too much presence in the game but I never felt like all of it was an attempt to push her on us. Yes she had that scene in Sojiro's house and that one in the wakaba fight, but she isn't the only girl to experience this. Ann gets two entire animated cutscenes dedicated to her, but you don't really see many people claim that she was pushed on us. The mary sue comments do bother me, but I think think people have drawn those conclusions because of how poorly she was handled in the story. Makoto does have flaws, she isn't perfect. The problem is is that the game never focuses too much on those flaws. She's a very angry person and tries to hide it with her reservedness, but outside of the kaneshiro arc and the one scene in her confidant its never shown again. (similar to haru who displays some distinct traits that very rarely who up) Had Makoto not been involved as much as she was in the story I think people wouldn't have these thoughts as much. Also the complaint that she has a lack of flaws also kind of urks me. Yes she might not have as many glareing flaws like Ann and Ryuji, but that's also because most human beings don't have such well defined major flaws to their character. Many people are like Makoto, reserved and prone to bouts of anger. But not very many people like Yusuke and Futaba, having a major flaw that practically defines them as a character.

I think you're right in that there is probably a clear character that was intended, but in the end it wasn't properly executed. I think this goes for most of the game, honestly. Different writing teams who aren't very good in the first place not communicating properly.
The only thing I don't agree with, and it bothers me for a good reason, is saying Makoto is intelligent.
I don't think she ever exhibits intelligence, and it bugs me to think that people associate grades with intelligence. I'm not memeing here, they really aren't the same thing to me. She makes a fair few observations which may make her seem smart, but it's only by comparison to the PT who are either silent or stupid for the sake of it to make her look smart. Again, that's just bad writing of course. Instead of devising a means for her to show intelligence, they made it so she seemed smart only by comparison.

And what it means now isn't just being good at a lot of things. It also means that the plot revolves around a character unnecessarily and for ill-defined reasons. As much as she talks, Makoto is rarely the acting principal characters. Of all the memes /pg/ has had, Marie being a Mary Sue was closer to the truth, the way she just sort of tied herself to the main plot and had a bunch of characters become so close to her despite them having no reason to do so, or only meeting her for like 5 minutes.

That's exactly why I didn't like her at all, Futaba was designed as someone you want to protect too but at least in-game her issues still exist after recovering like when she's genuinely afraid when Sojiro finds her calling card. I don't think that it's necessarily easy to portray intelligence in a Persona game of all things. I just dislike that people might misinterpret Makoto as smart.
Intelligence, as I understand, is a measure of someone's ability to use information. How quickly they understand and process a situation. Makoto doesn't display this in a more than average capacity, because she just says the obvious. Honestly speaking, did you ever hear an observation of Makoto's and think "that's really clever of her" as opposed to "well yeah"

Honestly, Makoto is the hardest character to do that to, and not just taking into account the shit-flinging that surrounds her here. She's objectively the least disenfranchised human member of the PT, and most of her problems are self-inflicted. The game could remark on her less than noble actions, like blackmailing her way onto the team (which Akechi also does, and Futaba threatens them similarly as well), or make her experience more fallout for standing up to the Principal. But instead her life changes for the better by standing up for herself, she's not the same as Yusuke who skirts the line of being homeless or Futaba who was horrifically abused and has to relearn how to interact with people outside of Sojiro, and sometimes even with Sojiro himself.

I kind of wish they made her athletically disinclined. Like a Mementos line where Ryuji talks about running and Makoto mentions that she can't sprint two blocks.

Just more things like that to round her out, because she does come off as an ace at everything. Because she's not atheletically disinclined, she's a pro at aikido (we argue how effective that is here, but casual fans generally think this makes her strong and kickass). She says she has trouble relating to her peers, but she makes a new friend easily enough and is even savvy enough to know her new boyfriend is going to trick her, based on her friend's homelife and his demeanor.

So the game doesn't recognize Makoto at being good at schoolwork and nothing else. If anything it's trying to get me to see that she has strengths she's unaware of, and that she's selling herself short.

It's a bit funny how much she gets mocked for that. I always took it to being similar to the classic Frank West "I've covered wars, you know." A character trying to sell up their strengths while being bad at it and the player knowing they're in over their head with their real skillset.

Actually yeah, it does feel that way. A lot of people see different things in Makoto, and that may well be because she has all these smaller moments that display a different positive trait, whereas there seems not to be much in the way of negative traits. Any of those seem like potential pluses if anything, such as when she snaps at Kaneshiro's palace. You could think that speaks to anger management issues, but people instead are more likely to perceive this as assertive, which is a good thing to most, and badass.

In the scene we were discussing, Sae was becoming testy to the point of being abusive. I don't think there was any chance of Makoto being in the wrong in these scenes.

Because this scene happens before Futaba actually knows anything beyond her mother's research. She knows nothing of the Thieve's actual methods. Which isn't that far off from Makoto getting impatient and running off on her own before she understands how the PT operate.

I can see why someone doesn't like her, but in some of these scenes she's obviously going to be right by default.

Yeah, the way you portray a character is critical to how well they're ultimately done and I don't think Sae got a fair shake either with how Goro is one of the sole people who both criticizes her yet expresses understanding of how difficult justice is. IT has the best defined relationships with each other, in that you can see how the interact differently with each member of the group. But I don't think being "closer" than SEES or PT is a part of that, they're just written so that their dialogue can bounce off each other better.

Because even then, IT still under-utilizes some of its characters, and there's some really good interactions they could have had but didn't take enough chances with like Kanji/Yukiko or Naoto/Chie.

For me, answering why I love Makoto will always be inefficient or lacking because I'm a retard who can't put it into words but I'll try.
Her looks is what first got me interested in her. Brown, short hime cut and she can also be good with long hair too, red eyes and pale skin. And a hair band which I first thought it was her real hair. Out of all the PT girls she's the one who won the first impression for me.
She's academically smart, elegant and polite but gets really dumb in certain situations like when she tries to stalk you or snapping and go into danger's face head on. I also like her "childish" or unladylike behaviors: liking action, video games and cute mascots.
Her awakening is not my favorite Yusuke’s is my favorite but it sure was the most badass of them all. Her outfit and a bike persona are really cool. She has brass knuckles and a revolver which I think reflects the “baddass” vibe the best.
The only thing I don’t like about her is her SL, but at least we knew something about her past and her resolve of continuing her studies for herself and not for others.
I know this my not be "good enough" justification for you /pg/ but I tried my best to explain.

I agree, but they still felt the closest group throughout the games. Every game has missed chances with the party, but I feel like IT has the least missed chances and showed the most. SEES, on the other hand, might be the most loyal group at endgame because of the whole fire-forged friends trope and shit. It's all a matter of what you see and what you expect out of people in their situations.

Don't get me wrong, I like Futaba's flaws more. When it comes to P5 I'm a Futabafag so that should go without saying And I think that makes her more interesting as a character.

This I take issue with. When it comes to issues, I don't think being self-inflicted makes something less interesting. A conflict doesn't become more interesting because it is external.

This came up a lot in P4 where I'd hear people complain they didn't have "real" problems, but I'd argue that problems with self-perception and worth not only are real problems but they're also a lot more relatable. Like I cared very little about Akihiko's dead sister complex in part because I can't really relate and it's never shown or put in a way that really interested me.

I get where Makoto was coming from, though. I understand thinking grades and school are everything and if you fuck them up your life is over and you're worthless. I've been there. It gets me invested.

Which isn't to say external conflicts are boring and internal is always interesting. Obviously how it's handled is a huge part of it.

Not the anon you were responding too but I disagree. Her appearance is the most "safe" and someone unconventional (like Ann) or more cutesy (like Haru) catches my attention way more. I really am not a fan of Makoto but as you can see it's all a matter of interpretation. If you like those things, shit, more power to you. I still think she's too much of a Mary Sue for my tastes. Good day Makotofag.
