Investigations 1 is pretty mediocre and most people say it's one of the weakest entries in the series, while the sequel is praised as one of the best games. Investigations 2 doesn't have an official translation, but there is a really good fan translation. 6 is also really good.
There's also DGS (Great Ace Attorney). Another spin-off, but that one is untranslated as well. There's a fan translation in the works, but they've been at it for over a year now and only translated 1 chapter out of 5 (even though there's a fucking playthrough of the whole game translated on youtube, so I dunno what the fuck they are doing). DGS 2 is coming out in Japan soon as well.

I don't really like discussing shit as a result, cause I think the reader's mental world plays a big part in what they get out of any given story.

Worldbuilding mostly and detail in NPCs. Makes it feel like the world is alive instead of everything revolving around you and your party. They're pretty verbose games so it kinda fits for an audience that likes VNs
The Cold Steel part of the series is the weakest though, but it's still a good JRPG

The games feel extremely grounded, and consistent within their world. They go to great lengths to instill a sense of completeness in the setting, and they don't tend to use cheap wow factor stuff.
It's hard to explain if you haven't played one of the Trails games. They set up a shitload of different plots and shit to the point where it can be hard to tell exactly what's "important", and that does a lot to lend legitimacy to the games.
When you hear about X happening in the region of Y, it might be important and you might go there later to help out, or it might just be a bit more background stuff. It's difficult to tell right off the bat, so I find myself actually paying attention to all the little details - and the hell of it is they never fuck it up. I've never once noticed a big fuckup in the games, even though so many little details are hidden in tiny conversations you might never see.
The script size is pretty comparable to VNs, by my reckoning. They're very, very good. If anyone's looking for a quasi-VN to tide them over, I couldn't recommend the Trails series enough. Start with Trails in the Sky, imo. That one introduces all the little intricacies of the world in a better way than Cold Steel, which just says "yeah theres books. just go read the books if you don't know whats up"

In CS the combat goes by really quickly due to all the AOE crafts that you can keep on using due to high CP regeneration. They're much more time consuming in TitS (glad I used cheat engine's speedhack to get through the battles quicker)

I never had any trouble finding quest monsters. I always had the quartz that shows enemies in the map and minimap so I just opened the map and looked for red dots that didn't move since, IIRC, quest monsters don't move on the map.
