Depends on the attack. Grabs are usually around 12 frames on startup, so any attack above 12 frames will lose to a grab. Jabs are 10 frames so jabs and high crush moves will always win out.
However, it also depends on the current frame advantage. If I hit you with a move that leaves me +3 or so on hit, I can immediately go for a grab, and even if you throw a jab, my grab will still come out faster.

I always at least give boxers a try. I started with King and Yoshi from T4 (pre fighting game awareness time, the mashing youth) but I always wanted to play Steve once he came out. For some reason I didn't pick him up once I started giving a fuck about fighting games. In T6 I played Lars and Feng. Finally got around to it in T7 and Steve feels better than any of the other characters, win or lose. He's a lot of fun. Yoshi is still my favorite character though (just not my favorite character to actually play).

there's always something to discover, learn, and improve on with him and he's explosive. never a dull moment in training mode or in matches. i never feel limited by the character.
i would make CH RFF b+3 do the standing nosebleed stun where he can get guaranteed JFSR after if close and done fast enough. i also want RFF 3~4 (launching power crush) to not launch and just do more raw damage like before. the scariest part of JFSR before was it would take chunk off and then RFF 3~4 takes another big chunk, but now it's just like normal damage for both.

in fighting games, i really like either super high damage characters who you have to read to get damage with or have relatively short combos that still do big damage but not as much as the hard read, but regardless they just absolutely lay you out (Pot, MvC2 Jugg) or insanely goofy gimmicky characters that are just always fun to watch. i played Jack-7 and Gigas for awhile because I figured big guys do big damage, but it wasn't quite what I wanted. I tried the capos and Yoshi for big funny jokes but none of it felt very rewarding or especially silly. I eventually settled on Paul in spite of all the hate he gets because in a game where you have mishimas with insane execution and even more insane looking moves (EWGF, Devil Jin in general), bears doing god knows what, Claudio and his anime hand, Alisa's whole situation and just all this crazy bullshit, there's this rooster karate man who just wants to fucking hit somebody. A good comparison is Gon from Hunter x Hunter. He isn't my favorite character in the show, but his power in relation to how borderline magic everyone else is I find endlessly entertaining. Your best friend makes lightning, this old man has a giant golden stand, there's this girl with this fucking vacuum cleaner. What can you do? Punch you really, REALLY good. You know what he can do. You know what he does. Everybody knows what he does. But what the fuck can you even do about it besides just not get hit? It's the giant club from Dark Souls. It has only one job. If you avoid it, you're in the clear. But god help you get clipped.

Eliza. What drew me to her initially was how cool her combos looked. What made me stick with her was the amount of fun I was having using her. She's tough and I can't do her high damage combos yet, but I haven't had this much fun playing a character before. Also, kind of a waifufag so that's another reason I stuck with her. I would prefer if she had more options to open up her opponent though. That's her biggest weakness.

He's got some nice meaty hits and his damage output is really nice. His playstyle of being defensive one second and on a dime changing the pace of the match is what drew me to him the most, being in control is what I like. Only real reason I've stuck with him is because I don't like anyone else as much and I already changed characters once before. I don't think I'd change anything about him. The way to improve is repeatedly losing. Keep that in mind while playing, it helped me get over it. Also, go for small goals. Like "I'm going to sidestep X attack and retaliate with a combo" or "I'll lowparry this and combo him" and when you succeed, winning or losing doesn't really matter because you've met your goal.
I'm a scrub too, but I can at least enjoy getting better for now.
