The only areas that felt like they crossed the line of fairness were Iron Keep and pre-patch Amana, that's it. If I got through the rest of the game with ease and a bit of patience then so must everyone else in this thread.

Nope, it's the main way to play anything larger than a longsword.

That's up to you. The PvP is not (and will never be) very competitive or deep. It's still just ganksquads and a shitty half-assed arena mode. The DLC has a lot of good weapons and spells, and +3 rings, so if you do seriously play the pvp (don't) you basically need the DLC. Bosses in the DLC are good but it's a mixed bag, definitely not as good as previous game's DLC.

Dark Souls 3 threw out any notion of a unified canon in the games by bringing back characters and locations in ways that made no sense. DS2 did that to some extent, but it was always on a separate continent so there was some plausible deniability that it was just a reference, not an actual canon re-occurance. DS3 straight-up re-uses locations though so you can't create a single canon.

Now it's best to think of each game as their own story, with loosely related themes and ideas between them.

Well, I mean comparatively. Very few games bother adding rapiers, and even then half the ones that do treat it like an extra skinny short sword that you swing around like anything else. Halberds are either used like a fucking spear or an axe. DS at least tries to make sense of it. Rapiers actually stab. Halberds can be used as spears, but are mainly used to slash and hack from a distance, and you're encouraged to actually use that distance to your advantage.

I just went through with that guide, and it does work. However:

You have to beat bosses to advance greirat's story. So that means after rescuing, you have to beat one boss once you unlock lothric castle before he will ask you to go, then another boss before he will die and you can pick up his ashes.

Same is true for sirris. Even if you "finish" her questline, if you don't beat a boss before engaging with rosaria she won't leave the game (and her items) and will act betrayed.

The things that make souls unique were not contributed or designed by Miyazaki. He's just the guy who had the idea to make it dark fantasy, and was a semi-competent project manager. A lot of the things that makes souls unique came from existing from soft team members and was present in their games before he joined.

Miyazaki's contribution was being a good businessman at getting the publishers to not smother the creativity. He turned the shitshow DeS into a solid game. I'm guessing he also contributed a lot to the story/plot of DS1 (but not DS2/DS3) since Armored Core For Answer was basically a demo story for DS1. He got the idea for corpse runs from Everquest, according to some interview from a few years back. He might have also contributed character design work, since that's what he did before becoming a director.

The visual style of souls is all Makoto Satoh, software design is Jun Ito. Yuzo Kojima also had a lot of contribution, since he directed or did graphic design on most of From's RPGs, and was a project manager for DS2 (which is why DS2 looks, visually, more like Evergrace than DS1).

The WAY the story is told (Faceless protagonist engaging with separate factions, lore revealed through item descriptions, endings based on who lives/dies and NPC questlines etc.) is from King's Field and Armored Core and pre-dates miyazaki. Same with most of the combat mechanics, which are lifted from Evergrace, and Otogi with AC's garage system. Even things like Poise were first introduced in AC games. The invasion system is just a multiplayer version of the NPC invasions from previous armored core games too, especially ones like AC2 that featured asymmetric (split screen) multiplayer.

Miyazaki is a good director, but he's just one guy and has a pretty limited skillset. He's more businessman than developer, and the things that makes Souls unique are not solely attributed to him.

It can be done, but most people who have attempted so far make the game really frustratingly difficult without understanding the design behind the difficulty of the main games, and they completely ignore the world the game takes place in.

A good Souls game needs to take place in a world that feels like it could really exist. It needs to feel alive, even if all we're doing is walking around after everything has already happened.

That said, yeah you can skip it. it's a tutorial and it gives useful advice if this is your first souls game, but it's by no means mandatory.

A few tips
>your dodge roll is your number 1 tool for avoiding damage, especially later in the game when it becomes harder to keep a shield up. It has invincibility frames that let you dodge attacks altogether. Use it. Since you're playing 2, level up Adapability some, that increases the invincibility frames
>don't try to spread yourself too thin. Health and stamina are important no matter what, but don't try to level up so you can use everything on your first playthrough. It's a lot easier down the road if your level ups are focused (like a purely physical dexterity/strength build).

Cleric has probably the most efficient armor in the game. Prioritize upgrading it, and you'll basically be shrugging off enemy attacks left and right.

You can go really anywhere, but some areas (like the area with the fog) will have to be revisited later. There is more levels to go to afterward.

There is no area in DS2 that is too hard for you when you have access to it, so feel free to explore as much as you want. The order doesn't matter either.

Drop it down to 50, and spend those points on Vigor and shit.

Make sure your staff is upgraded to +5, and infused with a Faintstone. Use the higher tiers of Soul Arrow, and make sure you have plenty of Attunement as it affects casting speed as well as number of slots. You'll also probably want Clear Bluestone Ring +2 and maybe even Southern Ritual Band +2.

You have to make sure you hit with 2 or 3 of the beams AND the circle. They all have a hitbox.

You can see in that video when he only hits with one beam, he does 197 damage. When hitting with 3 beams plus the circle, he does 1000 because he's hitting 5 times.

It's a powerful spell but hard to use and generally not worth the investment compared to just chucking crystal soul spears, which do less max damage but are way more reliable.

You might want to try soul Geyser instead, it's basically 4 soul spears at once, and I think it has the highest damage potential for one spell in the game.

There are a few weapons that deal actual damage as blessed but worse than just going sharp and most healing miracles aren't easy to pull off in pvp. You need to diversify your build. If you have an enchanted weapon, don't even try to use spells in iron passage just melee the whole thing.

A good sorceror ready for the DLC in DS2 would look something like this:

No, blocking only affects steam messages. I'm pretty sure you can still connect. Obviously you can't just be invading the same player over and over again. First, there's cooldown timer, which prevents you or anyone else invading someone who's already been invaded in the past 5-10 minutes or so. He might not be embered after dying once. And the game prioritizes hosts with some friendly phantoms already summoned for invasions, so even if he's embered and not on c/d, you're still unlikely to invade him if there are other players in the area, who have summons with them.

If that helps, the clutch rings do pretty much nothing in PvP, but decrease your DR, so they're useless in case you get invaded. So you can trade those off for some other rings. You'll just lose some damage in PvE.
But honestly, trying to use all magic types is a bad idea in Souls. If anything I just opt for some utility spells on my main PvE character which I bring to the super late game. So I don't need the damage rings for those.

There's a magic weapon buff (magic weapon, great magic weapon, crystal magic weapon) and there's a magic infusion, and an enchanted infusion.

Magic weapon adds 50 magic damage and multiplies existing magic damage by 1.15, 1.20, or 1.25 depending on whether it's normal, great, or crystal. So magic infused weapons (which have magic damage). Using this (plus abusing counter hits) is how you make your magic infused weapons do absurd damage because something with 400 magic AR goes to 560 AR or more.

Enchanted infusion makes physical damage scale with intelligence, so crystal magic weapon will only add 63 (50 * 1.25) damage. But it DOES stack.

But it's fun. Gouging attunement so you have half a dozen spells that you can use to mix it up and play mindgames. Spamming soul spear so they think you'll fall apart at close range, only to hit them with chaos storm after you conveniently present an opening for them to get close. Hitting other sorcerers with GMB and watching them have to resort to melee, only to get right in range of one of the magic greatswords. Luring them into a tight space, using iron flesh, and casting WotG. Get tired of your current setup? You have an entire library to choose from, at no additional cost.

It's the only real reason I recall 2 fondly. I'm kind of disappointed I'll need to take up 3 ring slots at minimum to make it work in 3, and that I might need to cut it down to 2 at a time at the most to be even close to viable.

I'm sorry you didn't like DS2, but every game From Software made after 2004 has a completely different game engine with different stats and systems, despite being in the same series. Just like DS2. And since King's Field 1, they always change the story and setting drastically and leap forward hundreds of thousands of years. They always try different priorities and controls with each new iteration. This is nothing new, it makes you part of that 0.01% group of players that couldn't move past the fact that it wasn't an expansion pack on DS1.

You probably played DS1 and just expected DS2 to be identical, and wanted it so bad you didn't pay attention to the very obvious signs that it was a different kind of game aimed at different players.

Thrust attacks gain 20% extra damage on counter hits. Otherwise, just look at the AR. 100 AR thrust on a spear is the same as 100 AR thrust on a longsword, if it feels weak, try to increase the attack rating.

Depends on the enemy and the rest of your build. Some areas are easier with one, some are easier with the other. Customize more.

Kind of. you might want to switch to a plain weapon or an elemental weapon if an enemy is resisting most of your damage, but other than that, you're fine to use whatever you feel like

Again, personal preference.

The biggest draw for dark souls for a lot of people is that there's no "meta" way that you have to play; you can use whatever weapon strikes your interest and easily take it to the end game (with a few obvious exceptions, like the broken sword). What's far more important than which weapon is better than another is how you're using the one you have. A weapon that scales with the stats you're leveling up, that you're upgrading, that you are comfortable with, will take you all the way to the end easily.

If you want to play the game on the easiest possible difficulty, just about everything can be cheesed with magic. If you want a more "legit" easy mode, straight swords and shields are the way to go.

Honestly, a non elemental weapon can easily carry you throughout the game without an issue. I don't think there's much that resists Lightning, though.

Technically, they're not twinks. Twinks have to play through the game at the invasion range they choose to get the items they want and the estus needed to handle password phantoms. These guys are just password summoned from their max level

If it was a host using CSS though, that's a hacker, you can't get crystal spells until Duke's Archives

Basically, if you want a chance of winning at low levels, play through the game at that level (Just pump VIG to 27 minimum and get the base stats for some raw weapons, 14/14 is ideal for most, 20/xx if you want Vordt's) and then clear through the game. I can consistently hit SoC at those levels and I'm no expert player, so it's not the most daunting challenge in the world, just understand that you will be fighting most if not all of the later bosses without help

By the time you hit NK or Even dancer one could easily have 13 I-Frames so It'd be possible to dodge them.

Sure, except with the sole exception of DS2 every game has been easily beatable at soul level 1, in large part because of the trainwreck that was ADP locking the fundamental cornerstone of movement and damage avoidance in souls games behind levels, which made it unreasonably difficult to play the game at soul level 1.

Well it's a good thing that DS1 casters were game breaking no matter what they equipped. As for DS2, I literally never had a problem with running out of casts in that game; you had weaker spells for weaker enemies but you also had plenty of casts of the stronger spells, too.

I disagree, the attunement system was a much more unique and nuanced mechanic that encouraged more consideration of resource usage as well as having a charming retro feel to it.

It also gave more incentive to character building, since you would need to gather multiple copies of spells that you wanted to have more casts of, though this was also a downfall of the system since neither DaS1 or DaS2 had a satisfying acquirement mechanic for spells. DaS2 was better about it, but eh.

I really liked it and was dissapointed that DaS3 dumbed it down with the FP bar. I will give it one thing, though, I much prefer WAs using that than using weapon durability. I'd have preferred WAs to have a separate usage limit based on the weapon, and the old attunement system being kept.

I respectfully disagree. Mana/FP is streamlined, yes, but it's a vastly less interesting system purely due to it's flexibility. Limitation is a good thing.

More regen for FP sounds like a lot of cancer, since the wizard already wants to run away if there is anybody in the same postcode as him. It just engenders passivity, which isn't something you want to encourage more than it already is.

This is actually bad. As with ds3 you only need a spell equipped and you can choose how much FP you want to burn on a spell. Ds2 you are extremely limited and are stuck spamming which ever spell you stacked copies of. In ds3 I could equip 5 different spells and only cast each as many times as I need or want instead of being forced to only spam one of them until I run out of copies of that spell.

If you needed more than the base 3(ish, it's been a while, I don't remember) casts of wog you were spamming it and were thus an even worse player. Especially since you also admit you only used it for pvp, so you can't say "oh but 3 casts isn't enough for a level".

I don't even dislike FP that much, I was actually kind of hyped for that change, but the way it is now is pretty disappointing. giving yourself ashen flasks means gimping your estus pool. Most spells worth having drain your FP bar like nobody's business, but they also leave leftovers, and unless you're carrying around useless low level shit you're going to waste that when you take a blue sippy. It feels so inefficient. Like, I'd rather know how much I can cast each spell rather than guesstimate mid combat how I can use my FP bar the most efficiently and feel like I'm being wasteful anyway.

FP's biggest problem, IMO, is that it's competing with estus as a resource, and fast, easy healing is way more valuable. Its why I feel like I have to be so careful with my FP use. Regenerating FP would solve that, but that would also make caster regen stall builds a thing and that wold be even more cancerous than normal regen builds.

typical ds3 sorcerer flask spread is 9 normal flasks/6 ashen flasks which gives you enough firepower for all your needs, with pyromancer you can incorporate things like sacred chime of filianore and parting flame into your build to be even less reliant on normal flasks and you can go full ashen flask mode with your cleric while gaining an entire shitload of more efficient healing options

currently faith builds are already absolute monsters in my opinion
lighting arrow is quite possibly the best bread and butter miracle in the entire series, it's versatile, it's fast, it costs almost nothing, it's greatly usable in pvp as well, especially when combined with some regen miracle so people will actually be pressed to rush you before you can heal back
you have sunlight spear for crazy burst damage if needed, especially good in pve where it goes up to 1500 damage per cast, you have lighting storm which is probably the best aoe spell in the game for dealing with small annoying enemies thanks to poisecast
they can also branch into regeneration builds which are quite annoying to deal with during invasions, i have SL75 blessed lothric knight ugs build and i can waste all host flasks without even using my own
that's not to mention the motherfucking crucifix

It's an absolute shame that this is the consensus shitters have come to. Some of my most fond souls memories are playing an in-your-face caster using close range attacks like chaos storm and the great sword attacks to play mindgames with enemies. Sorcerers in souls games are traditionally long-ranged.
Only pyromancers and to some extent clerics are a mix of ranged and close-combat abilities.

You should try it on warden twinblades. You get approximately 90-100 bleed build up for each L1. That's enough to proc bleed in 3 L1s..
