In my deeply flawed casual opinion, on the Tactical side of things, LW2 is really really good. On the strategy side of things, it's flawed and covered in unnecessarily obscure and confusing mechanics.

I think overall i have 3 big complaints about the strategy side of things, 1 is that getting missions is RNG, second is that there are way too many mechanics involved in mission generation, Advent Strength, Vigilance, force level and maybe more(that not even taking into consideration how many things can modify these things), and third, they don't tell you dick about how any of it works. Oh and Dark Events spawning in countries that you haven't contacted so you can't stop them.

Not to mention the shear douchebaggary that is trap missions, another unexplained mechanic that is only there to be annoying since it's so obvious once you know they exist. I preferred the LW1 giant landed supply barge in the early months that you weren't expected to be able to take, but if you were good and prepared you could.

Instead, everything in the early game of LW2 is just too geared in favor of the computer, it's play near perfect, or lose. Even on Rookie it feels like the game doesn't pull any punches.

Well, it would probably be a stream. Since we're getting Hunter info in less than an hour, that leaves 4 weeks~ until the expac comes out, and coincidentally we are also getting 4 new enemies(Priest, Purifier, Lost and Spectre), so we'll probably get info on one every week until release. So challenge mode info will probably be a weekend stream.

>From those hunting blinds, it can fire a Tracking Shot and target an XCOM solider from wherever they hide on the map. As soon as you see the laser-sighting beam, you have one turn to break line of sight before he takes the shot.

So if you see the laser you just hide that soldier and he can't shoot him.

The only legitimate criticism here is the lack of documentation.

Advent Strength (aka alert level) is the biggest modifier, and modifies pod sizes and number of pods. It grows in response to XCOM operations. The growth does not occur if the supply raid/troop column reinforcement is interdicted by XCOM. ADVENT can also request emergency UFO reinforcements periodically if you're laying the smackdown hardcore.

Vigilance is a direct reflection of how scared the forces in that region are of XCOM. They will shut down certain mission types (namely VIP/jailbreak) at high levels. High vigilance also means they will attempt counter insurgency like retaliations.

Force strength is just how far you are in the game. ADVENT periodically gets new units as the campaign goes on.

Whining about RNG in XCOM is about as stupid as it gets. I get that you might feel shafted when you're having trouble getting a region liberated, but I heard for months that XCOM 2 had a too simplistic strategy layer; and they were right. In the base game, every campaign is pretty much the same on the strategy layer. Here there's a bit more planning involved, and frankly I think most players can cope with it.

And complaining about managing squads, weapons, resources and armor in XCOM is just laughable.

The strat layer in LW2 is sitll pretty damn simplistic and you don't get to interact with much of that in any meaningful way. Its just sit back and hope that something falls in your lap. A meaningful way to interact with those mechanics would be like the new missions that are going to be introduced in WotC, or use the haven soldiers in more meaningful ways than the three jobs they have right now. Let me put some rebels on a job that will help me reduce strenght or vigilance, instead of hoping RNG will throw me a bone and give me a mission. I lost my last Legend campaign because my starting region rocketed to 7 strength before I could branch out and no missions popped up for me to counter it. I got a couple troop columns, but it wasn't enough to keep it from spiraling out of control. You can't just make a game unwinnable because of RNG on the strat layer, enough actions happen in the tact layer that it evens out, but the strategy layer can screw you in one or tow actions and lose you a game you have spent a large chunk of time playing.

While I agree your influence over the strategy layer could use some work, like with resistance ring type missions that will be in WotC; I wouldn't say you're forced to wait for something to fall into your lap. Reapers don't really do anything Ranger like aside from Stealth. If anything they are what the LW Scout should have been, mixed with a little bit of a Saboteur kind of class. Explosives out the ass to make sure that their stealth is maintained or regained. Templar's seem super strong since they basically have implacable/deflect/reflect every time they use their melee plus they can swap places with enemy/squadmates and can also duplicate themselves (once per mission) while Reapers tho seem lacking when you look at them, seem insanely great with squad sight and their remote start doubles the explove dmg and range, plus with Covert ops reapers might have a lot more value if they botch it because of shadow concealment.

I think Templars will be the best of the bunch. Making cover? You know how insanely powerful that is both defensively and offensively? Tricking stupid Advent into taking it as a cover option to move up is going to be too easy and then it just disappears the next turn and they have no cover. Teleporting enemies so they are out of cover, while putting yourself next to the enemies that are easy to kill? We don't know how far Volt jumps, but I hope it's at least Grenadier grenade range. Some kind of disorient blast, possibly with a chance of stun. Being able to reflect a shot, meaning leaving them out in the open after slashing someone is not only completely safe, but also damage beneficial. And then the two holy mother of skills, Psi Storm and Ghost. I don't think anyone needs to tell you how stupid powerful these skills are.

Skirmisher's strength is just going to be very variable, since his abilities rely on enemy circumstance, rather then the Templar's more RNG ramp up of gaining focus drops from other peoples kills, or simply killing targets with Rend.

Having his cooldowns up for long chain of attacks is going to be key to using him well. I think the two will be pretty close to kills per mission. Reaper might edge them out just because of Remote Start though. It's easy to forget just how many fucking explosives are on a map and with that sit rep that fills maps with explosives, hell. I can't wait to blow up a ton of Advent that thought that car was a fine place to sit.

Yep, Skirmisher's lack of fire power (they do less damage) will be made up by how versatile they'll be with how much moves they can make and even on OW, with Layway they can take actions rather than shoot the first guy in their LOS. I think reaper would be kinda effective if they can bring at least 2 claymores but besides that they make great scouts at least and their damage while lacking is still good if you can keep staying in shadow conceal and they'll be valuable in stealth missions which I think WOTC will have a lot more like the rescue and assassination missions.

Yeah it was shown in the stream (that was never uploaded) they're basically highlighted so you see them when they enter fog of war which is pretty great. Almost all their skills too let them reenter shadow concealment too if i remember it correctly so you can take pot shots pretty frequently at higher rank and just go back to conceal which is pretty strong since A.I don't really know how to fight against concealed enemies although one strength of a chosen could be "REVEAL ALL CONCEALED UNITS" which will fuck your reaper up, imagine the hunter getting that strength, no conceal + his eagle eye see the whole map bullshit.

Yeah, I saw that on the Warlock. Fucking hell that is going to be too powerful. Having all my scouts get fucked and not even be able to re enter concealment until the chosen are gone is just horrific. Also, yeah, I have seen how poorly the AI handles not being able to 'see' you. Rogue class mod made that really clear with reposition. That do over has saved my ass and is completely broken. Any class that can attack and keep stealth just means the enemy runs around. I remember the day I started taking rapid fire pretty much any time I get the opportunity. I saw bagel do it once in an EXALT mission and have done it since in LW1&2.

Even when the shot is like 43% that's two shots as opposed to one 58%. And if it misses you get locked on for the second shot, if it hits hard then executioner will make it a 63%.

This is a known bug, it happens with Andromedons and Berserkers alike. Basically, what happens is that they go for a melee attack and are interrupted by a melee attack in return or by certain abilities triggered on overwatch. This causes them to get stuck in slow mo movement for awhile. They still do stuff, but animations won't play and that sort of thing. No real solution beyond just letting it happen, it usually resets itself over time.

Dead Rising 4 doesn't have psychopaths, doesn't have timers at all anywhere, survivors are instantly saved when you save them so no escorting, zombies are easier in general in that they are less aggressive and weaker and they very rarely grab you, you can no longer pick up food items they are insta-use when you pick them up, healing items are like medkits and shit that you carry around and they are an insta-use too, there's a lot less environment and misc. weapons now, more stupid crafting bullshit and you don't even need a table now, your inventory is humongous and is divided between healing and melee and ranged, and the whole game has this weird "Christmas" theme to it.
To top off this gigantic shit heap casualized trashfire, Frank dies at the end of the game. It's like those Candian hipsters did everything in their power to piss off the original fans and shit on the first game.

Closest one I found that I liked was the Scout from Escalation's classes. Always active reaper and a free action on flanked enemies means you don't have to worry about not having cover after a kill, and the ability to chain kill low hp enemies is great.

You can go for flanking shots from further away, which can be nice. If things go horribly wrong your Ranger won't necessarily end up stuck in a position where they're guaranteed to be counter-flanked and killed. Run and Gun plus Rapid Fire makes them an okay generic 'rifleman' type soldier.

On EU I used to always give my Assaults ARs because I thought the shorter range made shotties useless. In fact in general I saw Assaults as just supports without the extra medkits outside of Terror missions.

Latest Classic Ironman EW run changed that when RNG gave me lots of Assaults and I was forced to MEC my only Support to get her back in the fight two weeks sooner. However, Rapid Fire Lasrifles and plasmas are so effective, I still haven't found the time to spare for shotgun upgrades...

They occasionally did, but only when the situation happened to fall into place for it - I rarely made closing in my main strategy.

I just never realized just how OP a crit-spec'd Assault is since I always went for the defensive abilities. Having more Assaults that I knew what to do with got me to play around with their builds a bit, and made me realize I'd been using them the wrong way all along.

LOFTEMPS.DAT is found in the GEODATA folder. It contains "Line of Fire Templates", used to create 3D representations of the creatures and objects within the battlescape. These are used for Line of sight (LOS) (to see units, terrain uses MCD[31]) and line of fire (LOF) purposes.

In UFO there are 112 entries, 3,584 bytes in total (or, in TFTD, 114 entries spanning 3,648 bytes). TFTD stores the LOFTEMPS tables in the TERRAIN folder, but also keeps a copy of UFO's version in its original location - though this old version is unused.

I applaud Lump for his excellent tactical sense making the tactical layer in LW2 truly interesting and variable, but having seen his notion of a strategic layer, I'll believe it when I see it.

On one hand, I like it since it's logical that someone would need supernatural powers to defeat an enemy so much more advanced, but on the other I don't, because it takes away from the HFY spirit of the original and turns it into yet another young adult "chosen one" story.

Theory: That's the Ethereal you see in the very first cutscene, the first one you meet after being captured. He realizes you're [Ascended/a True Ethereal/whatever we're calling what Asaru is] and protects you from the others for some reason, helping to train you to defeat them. Or when he says "like you did before" he's actually talking about the Zudjari, although that's awkward language. Why? Could be the lead Ethereal from the first game who got usurped by Angelis looking to get revenge on her. But who knows.

They popped up on the temple ship at some point in the past and the Ethereals used them as a source of information and proof of humanities strength.

Since they know it meant humans and the commander managed to win.

Yeah same i literally have never had problems with them. Give them proper priority, spacing & compensate for them like any other type of differing enemy & you're completely fine.

Their stun lance is rather fucking cool though. Shame mods that add it give it almost no damaging ability.

I realized after it was because I was blocking the ladder up to my position because the other one I had blown apart in an earlier fight, and she has no way of climbing up to me, or attacking me from range.

When the Commander was hooked up in the stasis suit they had him run endless simulations of XCOM:EU/EW. Every time you won a game of XCOM that was a legitimate win, and really happened in the XCOM2 timeline, but it was a simulation.
The Elders basically used (the players) as a wargame to better understand how humanity might resist them.
"Beath them again like you did before." just means the Elders never intended you to win any of their simulations.

So basically if you have a low hit chance and low crit chance, if you hit them you're guaranteed to crit. And with Veteran and above's aim+ crit+ for ayys, this is why it feels like they're crit-machines sometimes. They'll gladly take a low % shot because they don't give a fuck, while you won't because it's a waste of ammo and you'd rather hunker down or overwatch or flashbang or anything else.

There's also the simple issue that crits benefit enemies more than they benefit you. They have larger numbers, all of their troops are completely expendable, you have fewer troops and if one even so much gets as wounded nevermind killed you're set back in a big way.
