I just realized another of my issues regarding the PT: They're rarely in conflict in spite of their varied backgrounds and it's part of why I don't find them as interesting as SEES or even the IT with their massive clash of values during the Namatame thing.

That the principal of Shujin couldn't identify the PT either feels a bit weird considering Ann and Ryuji have obvious links to Kamoshida and had the most to gain by changing his heart, but I'm okay with Confidants knowing since that's why they're Confidants.

Her writing is incredibly messy from the start because writer's bias. Forcing the audience to like her through pity moreso than the virtue of her character and constantly TELLING us her intelligence without showing it accurately is one of my biggest pet peeves. By extension, I feel like by the writers wanting her to do so much, the rest of the cast (sans Futaba) amounted to little after she joins. Her confidant is also one of my least favorites in the game, period.

After that, I feel like Atlus uses her as a magical tool to solve problems that PT otherwise would be fucked without. Your analysis of what makes Makoto's writing messy is close to mine, and another thing I'd add is that she's sick of being a model student but ends up looking like that anyway the entire game in spite of being a rebel, and while the High Priestess Arcana does focus on finding one's inner voice I find it incredibly bothersome that she homes in on a new friend's boyfriend, finds him shady and is completely accurate which defeats the purpose of the soul searching initially present in her overall and Confidant arc unlike with Fuuka and Yukiko who had to overcome other issues before getting there.

Futaba I think is largely an issue due to her effective deus ex machina powers, her dungeon and arc is one of the best in my opinion especially as the PT eventually wants to help her as opposed to how they just wanted to take down Medjed at first.

Another thing about Makoto: Ryuji has a bad leg from standing up for himself, Joker got expelled and had to go to jail, Ann suffered a lot of discrimination and was sexually harassed, Futaba lost her mom and nearly killed herself, Yusuke is still struggling with his feelings regarding Madarame and Goro is a fucking mess. Makoto in the meanwhile is pressured, yes, but there's never any real feeling of tension with her for me while what Mitsuru went through while also being student council president was considerably worse.

Yes, this. It just falls right back into the 'Makoto is always right, even when she seems wrong' to validate her supposed superior intuition/intelligence. And you know what's worst? It does nothing for her. It does not allow her to reflect, it does not allow her to change. She stays in that same box she was in the beginning.

Makoto also has the least climatic impact of being a PT because AT WORST, she has one principal manipulating her into investigating PT and she deliberately creates a worst situation for herself due to her pride. There is no 'Yes!' when she stands up for herself because Kaneshiro is not only a poor villian, but not even her abuser until she throws herself at him.

Yeah, Futaba's deus ex machina powers are probably the only real writing flaw I have with her. I think the writing for her dungeon is the most effort PTeam put into a character's arc since Kamoshida, period.

Speaking of, Ryuji's entire everything is a mess after Kamoshida. I'll elaborate in another post, this is getting long.

You hit it on the spot, all the other characters acknowledge problems with their way of thinking (For example Ann acknowledges she was also at fault for Shiho's fate and Ryuji decides he doesn't need fame to want to help others) while Makoto remains static in spite of having so much screentime. Aside from that she puts herself into danger more from blackmailing the PT and rushing off to Kaneshiro than circumstances she absolutely couldn't escape, yet no one really criticizes her for that.

"She was under pressure!" Yeah, try telling that to the rest of the PT- there was no guarantee she couldn't otherwise get a letter of recommendation while the rest were facing things like their life becoming as much of a mess as Goro's or killing themselves. Do elaborate on Ryuji too, I'm interested.

I think the whole 'Makoto investigates the PT because principal told her to' is just stupid in the first place when actual police were in the school and could've gotten the job done faster if he'd request it. I know it's just a convenient excuse for Makoto to get closer and join, but it's a poor one. She's just a honor student even by the principal's standards, what the fuck could she possibly do?

Ryuji suffers from just.. utter character neglect. I know alot of people say he was at his peak in Kamoshida's arc but he's not even the star of the show there. The entire arc focuses more on Ann and Shiho's abuse by Kamoshida than anything regarding Ryuji. In fact, after he awakens his Persona, it is almost like he is a cheerleader in Ann's arc.

Like imagine if there was a Cognitive Ryuji? It's just such wasted potential.

The worst part is that Ryuji's confidant is nice, but it fundamentally does not serve to give him any epiphany or purpose in life? He's just Joker's friend by the end of it. Looking back at the things he asks Joker's opinions on like whether the PT are truly just or if people even regard them as inspirations to do better, he obviously wants them to try and understand that what they're doing isn't as black and white as they think but looks so sad about it that I think in spite of his determination he had the feeling they wouldn't understand.
