I don't understand why people have such a hard time figuring out Chara's character. It's ridiculously simple. They fall down, get adopted, perhaps earnestly want to free monsterkind or just avenge themselves upon humanity, and either way they end up manipulating Asriel, go to the surface, prepare to attack the humans, are stopped, and die. Actually, this is false. Chara was already awakened at the moment Frisk fell, and this is where the Narrator thing comes in. They wake up, confused and attached to Frisk, and they comment on everything around them while being confused and lost at first as to what's going on. And from there, Chara guides Frisk while Frisk guides Chara. Chara relays any and all information that Frisk needs and what choices they have, and Frisk makes the decisions on what path to go down. Depending on what path is taken, Frisk inadvertently teaches Chara a lesson on whether Asriel was right or wrong to go against them, and Chara can either spiral out of control and fall into evil demonhood, or Frisk can show them the light and Save them and stuff.

Either way, they weren't the best person at the start.
