Same setting, some of the characters from Cartagra including the MC are side characters in KnS, in KnS2 one of the Cartagra characters also plays a bigger role and some of its plot has callbacks to the plot of Cartagra.

You don't need to read Cartagra at all to read KnS2, all the stuff that was relevant in Cartagra gets explained again, and the returning characters are basically cameos that don't matter.
