Now that we're here: speculate on the future of aerial combat. Think 50-75 years out.

>dogfighting, obsolete or not?
>drones vs piloted craft
>changes in standard fighter size/dimensions?
>weapons systems
>stealth still viable?

Personally I suspect that fighters will to a fair extent remain the same sizes/dimensions that they are at present, even if unmanned. Beyond that I don't have much of a clue though.
>>
>>183249823
Drones, probably. Maybe we could find a way to make them smaller if we can reduce the size of their engines and payload.

it is a part of my strangereal headcannon that Knight Rider was aired in strangereal as well, but with a jet instead of a car. the question is, what is the jet equivalent of an 82 Trans-Am? it has to be a two seater where they can hide the actual pilot from the cameras.

>>dogfighting, obsolete or not?
Its obsolete now. Unless we all get amnesia and forget how to manufacture decent missiles and sensors, close range gunfights are dodo-tier.

>>drones vs piloted craft
We're gonna say greater integration of drone combat craft for sure, but they aren't going to completely replace pilots for now. The sixth gen of fighter aircraft is probably going to go the mothership with drone wingmen route, like in Yukikaze.
>>changes in standard fighter size/dimensions?
Probably the same as it is now
>>weapons systems
Lasers for anti missile defence are gonna be a thing. Smaller missiles as well, so you can pack more into the internal weapon bays of most 5th gen fighters.
>>stealth still viable?
Yes.

>>183250074

Slightly crap, but with a dedicated following worldwide and exceptionally simple to keep running. Also takes well to questionable paintjobs.

...MiG-21UTI?
>>
>>183249916
My thinking is that making them smaller would give them advantages in the maneuverability department, but that may not even be paramount in the next decades anyway. Their weapon capacity would be severely limited, but that's ok since you could probably count on having two smallish drones for every standard-size fighter you'd otherwise be building.

A more serious limitation would be operational range; despite their reduced size and weight, I imagine that they'd still get quite a bit less range than a full-sized fighter, especially since their wingspan would be reduced as well (I'm still assuming these drones are designed for A2A). They could still be quite handy for fleet defense and shorter-range operations though.

>>183250197
Yeah, I know dogfighting is in the dumps already, and I really can't anticipate much that would change that. But who knows. I concur about lasers and such for point defense against missiles too.
Coincidentally, I just started watching Yukikaze tonight, so I'm not watching your webm. But drone wingmen make a certain degree of sense; I'll have a better idea of what you're referring to sometime tomorrow when I finish the show, I guess.

I'll check it out; I dig the OVA so far. I haven't watched much of this stuff though, so I guess I don't have much to compare it to. Not that that matters. Macross seems to be pretty popular, but as a franchise it seems a bit daunting. I'll probably give it a go sometime later anyway.

What in actual fuck was that. I was thoroughly entertained but very VERY confused. Will playing the other routes help flesh this out a bit? Especially in regards to Rena and why the player character goes nuclear. are you playing as another "evolved" human like Dision, being controlled by Simon or something?
>>

>>
>>183251693
Hey, thanks. Appreciate it.
>>
>>183252489
>>
>>183252373
I haven't played the Dision route but the other ones look more tame. UPEO has a pretty comfy ending, the Neucom Fiona one is a bit sad and I don't remember much of the GR one with Keith.

Rena just has flight autism, not much more there from what I remember.

You are an AI tested by Simon in a simulation of a hypothetical war. None of what happens is real
>>
>>183252616
I guess you recommend you play that route then because it was truly batshit crazy in a good way. So there's just the 4 routes in total right? Can you play through them on the same save/profile or how does that work?
>>
>>183252750
I guess I*
>>
>>183252373
full spoilers here. The player character, N.E.M.O., is an advanced AI program in an artificial world within the electrosphere whose entire purpose is to simulate the entire world during the corporate wars in order to contain and repeatedly Abyssal Dision. Abyssal Dision is a digital copy of the real Dision that was uploaded to the electrosphere. shortly after that happened the real dision died in an explosion. Basically you're the antagonist and each route/ending is another simulation. that's why each save file has 6 slots, one for each ending and when you get all of them I believe it unlocks another ending. you kill Dision in the end in every route.

Macross isn't that daunting. You can start at pretty much any point in the franchise and not miss out on much since all of the series are pretty self contained as far as story goes.
Production order is still the way to go, but if your strapped for time, you can start off with Zero or Plus and just whittle down the rest through attrition.
>>
>>183252750
5 routes I think. UPEO, Keith, Dision, Fiona and whatever her sister was called.

I think the easiest way to go theough the game is to just save at the decision points and then reload from there while making a save for all endings. It kinda works if you save over the decisions of routes you have completed.

Or you can just replay it all at all times. I don't know if the game recognises that you did all the endings if you use just one save.

That said I will have to do his route at some point. But his views kinda kept me from it the first time around.

Zero and Plus are the comfiest ones tbqh. Zero just a bit more because the characters arent asshats.

Frontier is alright too minus whatshisname femboy being a shit at times. And then oddly grounded at other times. They also strap way too many packs to their VFs

SDF is QUALITY ANIMATION and the same Minmay songs over and over. But it is also up there.

Can't speak for 7 or Delta except that those have a lot more singing in it.

Ultimately I recommend Area 88 if you just want jets doing jet things.

to put a cherry on top of Abyssal Dision's suffering the first thing he sees when he is created is his real self starting to get it on with his scientist girlfriend, but he doesn't realize that the real Dision is him and so he thinks it's some other guy. then he sees the explosives being planted in the lab and watches his real self and girlfriend getting blown up.

What is your favourite US Navy paintjob, buddies?

>>183254152
Seven is much less serious than the rest. THE POWER OF ROCK is a tangible, quantifiable force throughout the series. Still one of my favourites in the franchise.
It does provide a good part of the setup for all the "music magic" plot points in Frontier and Delta.
The problem with Delta is its second half: it was meant to be 13 episode + movie, so when they changed it to 26 episodes they just murdered the series.
>>
>>183255329
Seven also has the best OVAs of the series. Dynamite is fucking awesome. The main series is a bit of a slog to get through, but the payoff is absolutely worth it in my opinion.

Are you kidding, his rock and roll autism was the best part, aside from Mylene/Guvava and the VF's. Plus, when he ANIMA SPIRITIA'd Gepelnitch, it was one of the top moments in any mecha show I've watched.
>>
>>183255712
At least I can relate to Rena's autism.

That said to this day I wonder why they bothered with the idols and music at all instead of just making a space opera with VFs, I would've loved that shit way more. I'm also still disappointed that ot was just the Zentradi and noone else. Yamato was boring like that too.
>>
>>183255998
I don't know why people want Macross to be some kinda serious gritty scifi war drama when there's a trillion shows and books that do that stuff already, like Gundam, or LoGH, or The Expanse, or Battlestar Galactica.

I like the uniqueness of Macross, not a lot of shows feature such a heavy emphasis on war machines while relying on entirely peaceful means to resolve their central conflictsplus I love the songs
>>
>>183255919
That scene was a blast (no pun intended) to watch. Still, I didn't enoy him as a character.
I was quite fond of Gamlin, tbqh.

>>183255998
My guess is that they wanted to set themselves apart from the rest of the mecha franchises of the time (even if the transformation mechanics of the VFs are outstanding, they weren't the only franchise boasting a transformation gimmick) by introducing pop music: Minmay.
It just became embeded into the series' formula and the executives probably don't want to take the risk of lowering their benefits by removing it.
>>

Then again you kill Rena and Dision in just about all of the endings too, Keith looses his buddy for his route and the UPEO buddy whose name I forgot ends up being alone after everyone leaves the force in most routes.

Hard tie between 04, 5 and Zero, desu. I like all three equally but if it had to come down to one, 04's is probably the best of regards to minimalistic simplicity. 5 is the most dramatic and cinematic whereas Zero is a slightly stripped down version of that borrowing from 04's minimalism.

Story's not even a contest. 5 used cardboard cutouts for everything from villains to protagonists.

Zero has a pretty weak story as well, but is saved by the strength of the presentation and the interviews.

4 has basically the only worthwhile story in the series, because it's more human. It's not really about the gods of the sky, but about a more grounded view of war's effects.

I don't like Infinity's Assault Horizon physics!

Also, when I went from 04 to 5, I felt 5 had much lighter controls and was an easier game in general. I'm still not sure if that change was for the better or if it made it more realistic.
>>
>>183282608
i enjoyed it as i prefer the more twitchy aspect it offered, but the main problem i found with the change from light and loose in 5 compared to 4's controls was that they didnt improve the AI to use it and thus made everything easy as hell
it was only improved in Zero where AI could pull also sorts of crazy shit as it used it fully

Assualt Horizon on 3DS worth a buy? Is it a good remake?
>>
>>183284958
It's an AC2 remake. And it's very good. Just get the eShop version.
>>
>>183284958
Yeah. It has more of a story, and special elements of 2 that were just there have plot significance now. ZOE is a party crasher.

There's a stripped down version of DFM that plays more like the counter maneuvers in Sky Crawlers so gameplay doesn't get too monotonous.

Only downside is the best tracks from 2 don't make it in.

As of 2017, there are ~550 MiG-21s, 500 Su-25s, 450 F-7s, 400 J-7s, and 400 F-5s in service worldwide. Except for the most heavily upgraded MiG-21s, I would give the modern F-4 an advantage against all of these.

There are also nearly 900 MiG-29s in active service worldwide, and against any of those which haven't been upgraded since the early 80s, I'd give the F-4F even odds as long as it stayed out of WVR combat.

I didn't think it was possible for a human to feel as much hate as I feel towards sea goblin right now.

How did I do this shit when I was 12? This fucking waste of oxygen keeps getting shot down after deliberately running into SAMs and enemy fighters and then making me spend 6 more minutes finding nagase just to repeat his fucking circus of bullshit. I have cleared out the whole area of fighters before and after calling him using SMAA and the asshole somehow manages to go down because he fucking sneezed or simply because since he's just a horrible, disgraceful piece of human garbage, an insult before god, just to spite me into doing this fucking cacophony of digital diarrhea which you call a mission. There is no excuse for this sub human trash to be within a 500 meter radius of any vehicle, and yet here he is, flying a helicopter, or, more appropriately, crashing a helicopter into the ground and into my soul.

I am seriously considering shutting off the PS2 and just going to bed, but I'm even scared of doing that, simply because I have full belief in Sea Goblin following me into my dreams and haunting me by repeatedly asking me if I know how to understand the distress signal sensor on my HUD.

I find no more joy in this game anymore. No more fun. No more challenge. It's not a video game anymore. It's fucking torture. Torture by repeatedly making me spend 6 fucking minutes holding down the throttle button and making me wish for the sweet release of death.

This is the Japanese's payback for the nukes, but instead of harming the body they're harming the soul.

Speaking of music, how the fuck does Chopper relax to angsty music like Blurry anyway? Not sure if Puddle of Mudd are generally that way, but it's like listening to Linkin Park to relax. Such emotional and desperate-sounding music, how do you relax to that?

Maybe if AC5 gets an HD version or something then they'll change it to something actually relaxing, maybe Cocteau Twins! Although I doubt that the royalties for Puddle of Mudd songs are very costly, considering the state of the band.

Well yeah, there's all kinds of tastes of course!

I like that sound too. (Unless it's Limp Bizkit because they're not angsty, but silly)
I'm sure it exists today still but it's a very defining sound of the 00's. That and the whole emo thing.

It's too emotional for me to relax to, and it's not my go-to genre at all, but I do quite like it when I'm feeling a bit angsty myself! And of course, it is the defining sound of AMVs and probably every (back then) 12-year-olds online gaming experience. One of those things I'll never stop liking probably.

If you don't watch much anime, please don't start with watching a dub. Stand Alone Complex has a good dub, but honestly, subtitles are usually better for voice acting quality.

Finished my second playthrough of AC3.
I went UPEO the first time, as for this second I went Neucom.
Fucking Sole Survivor was a shit mission though: downing Rena is a piece of cake, but Dision is pure bullshit, he keeps doing 180s turns while staying close af to you and when I went full speed ahead of him to turn and joust he'd steer to another direction, fucking up my missiles.
Also, can anyone confirm if there are any unlockables except for the true ending and the simulator?

I don't know if I should just go ask /k/ instead, but why all the hate for the F-35?
I can understand how goofy it looks with that one single engine for its larger frame, and it's mechanical issues. But why is it so universally disliked?
>>
>>183405480
People get angry about silly things like "development costs". They just don't love planes like we do and don't know what's important in life.

In all seriousness though, that is the argument I know is most prevalent beyond the "it's already outdated" and all that. Some also just don't like that their air forces bought this now over some other jet. The usual politics.
>>
>>183405480
All the hate comes from severe misunderstandings of how the program works, or how aircraft development in general works.
There has been some sever delays, but the plane is pretty much in service already, so people will begin to like it soon enough.
I'd wager most of the people who hate it are foreign nationalist types.

It lacks a smile.
On a more serious note, as far as I can tell it's mostly due to cost overruns (as usual with new fighters), the back-and-forths between producing it or upgrading existing airframes, the push towards exporting in spite of the prices still changing and unfavourable comparisons with existing airframes for missions the F-35 is geared towards.
To many it's the new Bradley. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXQ2lO3ieBA

I sorta meant among jet enthusiasts, but I can understand how the usual political shit can sway those people as well.
I know some pals who flat out hate it just due to its looks and specs, claim it's shoddy and shit. Other friends who work at an actual air force base absolutely love the plane.
Even here occasionally, I see anons complaining about it.
>>
>>183407061
My point still stands. You can be a "jet enthusiast" and not know jack shit about the intricacies of RFP's and IOC's and all the other alphabet soup combinations that is involved in developing, testing, and buying a brand new aircraft.
>>
>>183406853
That aircraft produces lift via smugness alone.

>>183407061
As a drawfag, I dislike it on a merely aesthetic ground. It looks chubby, not fat, but stocky with stubby wings.
I prefer aircraft looking somewhat lithe. It's a matter of proportions and viewing angles.

Paint one in republican colours and you get:

People are still pretty hung up on the Civil War, it's a touchy subject.

>>183419142
Yeah, It was cheap as well. I was looking at the nuclear stores release panel previously, but it was going for $70 plus and getting bid up as I watched. Sold for nearly $150. Sweet thing to have eventually, but maybe not what I start out with. Now I just regularly check ebay, and If I see something under $50 I'll throw an offer at them.
>>
>>183419595
Yeah that sounds like reasonable prices.

Saw a fully assembled Lancaster dash for about 1000.- or so. I wish I had that much money to waste on that shit And I wish I didn't know that those gauges will irradiate your balls. Still looking for a propeller to put on the wall, that seems a bit more reasonable.
>>
>>183419841
Props from a lancaster? Those would be some big props. I saw 4 blades for a P-47 going for something like 48,000.00

It'd be cheaper just to buy an assembled front cockpit for the F-4 for like 2-3 grand, but it's almost more fun to just collect this stuff piecemeal.
>>

Just props in general. Some fixed, two blade, wooden ones tend to go for around 100.-, or you know, just a replica.

Even with ferry tanks it only had enough fuel for 35 minutes flight so he'd have to declare a fuel emergency before he took off."

So this is some form of VTOL that's clearly only contained within those pods since there's no way they can move exhaust gas from the engines through those papercut wings.

I'm just going to assume this is advanced belkan/german antigravity technology since this apparently takes place on another world as well.

Wouldn't this cause the wings to bend upward? The F-104 has paper wings, and I don't think they could handle the torsion.

There's no Hollywood bullshit, except maybe one part towards the end, but it's a very good, suspenseful movie overall. I'd recommend it.

That's the CL-704 VTOL strike and reconnaissance proposal. It's a real concept.

>F-33 Freedom Flanker (still needs an F-4/F-14 style Navy livery)

>QF-4 or QF-16 mecha musume (if the OR is around, I'd like to ask which he prefers)
>>

It's probably a similar system to the Dornier VTOL plane where they just put a bunch of small jet's into pods.
>>
>>183461184
Yes. It's pretty good. I just found it entirely unrealistic; There was only two tea breaks in the whole movie
>>
I'm tinkered with Geogebra to get an (inacurate and likely absurd) estimate of the weapons bay capacity.
The main weapons bay for the modernized F-105 is 240 inches long (50 more than the real F-105) and 32 inches wide and tall. That is, it's a little over twice the length of the AIM-9, so it could mount two head-to-tail.
The end result is that the bay could hold 22 missiles, four of them already on the lauch rails that would rotate out of the bay when it is opened. The side bays would be standard 2 missile bays, but due to the length of the aircraft I could fit four of them along the fuselage instead of 2, or just 2 long (240 inches) ones for a total of 30 missiles carried internally. I haven't decided how many external weapons installations I should put. If they're even needed.
As an afterthought, an additional pivot could also allow the rails to rotate to face backwards.
Can I be a belkan citizen?

It's always fun to see how people go about it. I rely heaviliy on reference, doing a sketch placing the lines as I see them and then drawing a more correct drawing on top, erasing the sketch layer as I go to avoid confusion.
The F-33 is mid-lining, for example. The empty space is a placeholder for the F-105.
I should try properly constructing aircraft instead of just relying on reference sometime.
>>
>>183508203
I usually just lower the opacity of the sketch layer to like 10% and then draw over that. I hate erasing things because that'd mean I couldn't go back in case I wanted to mess with it again.

I also like to just make grids because it helps sometimes. Or I just make some basic scene or model in sketchup to go over, but that also feels like cheating a bit at times.

>constructing
Now you lost me, what do you mean then? Or did you mean that you redraw a reference picture when you said to use references?

My sketches are usually at 50%, enough to be visible without bothering me.
By constructing I mean breaking down the aircraft into simple shapes (a cylinder, an isocele triangle and four slabs for a Fishbed, for example, in order to easily imagine it in 3D and draw it from whatever angle you want.
(The example is obviously not mine)

I do try that sometimes, but not nearly often enough either. Issue is that most aircraft "flow" quite a lot, because they want to be as aerodynamic as possible, which makes the shapes a bit harder to figure out.

It kinda works well for cylindrical aircraft, like that one racer with retractable floats that I still haven't fully designed or made a model of.

Since I already posted a WIP of the F-33 Freedom Flanker, I'd like to get some opinions on how it looks.
For the moment, other than previously suggested changes, I've chosen to go with F-15 style wingtips rather than missile rails and I'm wondering whether I should keep the IRST, given it has FAST packs.
>>
>>183512632
Really liking the design so far. Any other views of it?
>>
>>183512632
Remove the grills from the bottom.
They are on top of the air intakes so that no objects get in during take-offs from rough fields. Better put some missile rails there.
You could move the IRST to the underside of the nose, like on the Tom Cat

Although it is worth noting that it isn't called a Spitfire for nothing.
Early Merlins on early Spitfires weren't easy to keep going and ultimately the plane demanded more attention than the 109 it faced off against.

And here is the S.6, which contributed a lot to the Spitfire's design and to the development of the Merlin engines.

Currently playing the main AC series for the first time, starting with 5. How normal is it to run out of missiles early? In Desert Arrow, I ran out well before the enemy AWACS units even arrived. Was using Mig-29. I wasn't sure what the most effective thing to do at that point is. Gunfighting feels sort of ineffectual, but maybe I'm just shit. I had some UGBs left so I hit some enemy planes with those, but once I was out I felt like I had no real damage. Should I try to gunfight, or just strafe some buildings to rack up my score and let the wingmen handle the other targets?

Do my wingmen ever run out of ammunition as well?
>>
>>183536818
Saw a few V-22s though, and that's pretty neat.
>>
>>183536849
Don't you have a retreat line to go resupply in the desert missions? Usually you only really run low in those get x points missions, which usually have a resupply thing.

Guns are pretty strong though so they work well against aircraft, if you know how to aim.

The only real tip is to not spam missiles against air targets and to wait until they actually have a chance to hit.
>>
>>183536849
>shit with guns
>skilled enough to hit planes with bombs
the belkans must have done this.
>>
>>183536849
>In Desert Arrow
Everybody runs out of missiles in that mission. It's one of the biggest and longest missions in the entire series, it's kinda a pain to be honest.
>>
>>183537276
Didn't know about the retreat line; I thought that was just the soft border for the combat area, which I would only be able to stay outside of for a few seconds without failing the mission. Good to know that I can restock.

Yeah, I learned pretty early that I shouldn't spam missiles. In the last mission, I just felt that there was no way I had enough damage to last for every target I'd engage, even if all of them hit. But if I can resupply, that changes things.
>>
>>183537474
Well, I was going for the bigger planes, like the B 52 and AWACS, and I was at close range.
>>
>>183537639
It usually says if there is a resupply thing. Otherwise it's just a white or yellow dotted line in front of the red border.
