I know a lot of people have come down from the hype about Undertale being "the best game ever", but personally not a day has gone by that I haven't thought about Undertale, and it's been almost two solid years now. I can't say the same for any other game I've played, and I think that says something about Undertale and just how impactful it was to me personally. It is my favorite game, and it will hold a special place in my heart until the day I die.

I think the simple reason is s dumb goat kid made me cry, which was a first for me with vidya. Aside from that, I've always been big with music in games, and Undertale's tunes were stuck in my head for over a year. Listening to certain songs brings me back to when I first played it, and how I felt. I don't think a video game will ever make me feel that way again. I think things like Undertale, when they click with you, are once in a lifetime experiences. I got bored of OFF quickly, I completed LISA The Painful with mild interest at best, but Undertale was the one that struck me.

I loved talking to the guy. He made a whole operating system for modern hardware because of nostalgia for programming Commodore 64 games, he invented his own interesting quasi-Christian theology based on the old testament and conversations with a random number generator, he drew funny comics about Moses. Conversations with him were full of wonderful things, and they were at their worst when they devolved into sad paranoid rants. And now the rants are overtaking the earnest passion.
I get why it happens, but it's really sad. There's more to him than this.

There are 7 main Monster characters, and 7 human soul children/souls (counting both reds together as one), with the Red SOUL as the main protagonist of the entire game, along with the Prince of the Monsters, Asriel Dreemurr. After these two, we ha 6 Monsters, and 6 Humans. If each Human and Monster had the opportunity to form a close bond, who would befriend who?

It's not much, but from this we can gleam some semblance of personality from these kids.

I have one hypothesis. Consider the following:
- Soulless flower: no empathy
- Six-souled flower abomination: no empathy
- Seven HSE boss monster form: empathy

It seems like he has no empathy as a flower, regardless of souls, and he does have empathy in his boss monster form, regardless of souls. But he needs souls to turn into a boss monster shape in the first place.
You could also explain this by Flowey not having a reason to show empathy in his Omega form while still being capable of it, and soulless Asriel being capable of empathy because of whatever residual power fuels his boss monster shape.

Patience likes to stay still, waiting for the right opportunity. They're most likely very cute and innocent, at least appearance-wise.
Bravery is always moving, can't stay still, they're impulsive and think with their fists. They put up a brave face of manliness and toughness against their fears and danger. Probably has a lot of fear deep down, which they hide and overcome with the manly bravado.
Integrity is a ballet dancer, and dances with their own unique style, and they strictly adhere to their own rules and ideals. Probably not the greatest person deep down, and most likely danced down a very dangerous and dusty path.
Perseverance is a studious bookworm. The location of their items implies they were engrossed in the history of the monsters, suggesting a strong interest in History in general. No matter what, they kept going and pushing forward to their goals, refusing to stop and give in. When they felt trapped, they took notes, to find a way to succeed or escape. Even if they are badly injured, they still push on. They might have a strong sense of Karma.
Kindness was a caring and concerned cook, showing love and compassion to all around them. They most likely loved cooking delicious food for everyone, wanting to ensure that everyone is living happy and healthy.
Justice was a cowboy with a mind locked on justice. Either they or their parents have faced many battles, and they were extremely precise with sure-fire accuracy, especially in the use of their gun. The four-leaf clover seen in the Omega Flowey fight suggests that they had a lot of luck.

It's the same reason why he doesn't instantly break down in tears when he gets his seven-soul form. You have to pull out the side of him that's been repressed and hidden away before he shows any empathy, and that was not part of the Omega boss fight.

In the Omega fight you call out to the souls, who were consumed with hatred and grief if Perseverance's attack was any indication, and once you do they turn against Omega so you can defeat him. If, instead of fighting, you had stubbornly tried to reach the sad scared goat deep inside, maybe something would have changed ...?

Flowey never needed souls to regain his emotions to begin with. He feels dead inside not because he lacks a soul, but because he's been traumatized over betraying his best friend and getting them killed. This becomes clearer in the genocide run, where one of the running gags is the player fixing everybody's emotional problems moments before ruining their lives. In both TP and Genocide, once Flowey fully deludes himself into thinking Frisk is Chara, they mellow out (relatively speaking) and don't want to destroy the world anymore. All he ever wanted was his best friend back.

Flowey already has almost everything besides love and compassion, and he makes it clear in one of the post-neutral speeches that even if he did find Chara, he likely would just be deluding himself into trying to feel love. Nonetheless, he definitely seems happy enough. One minor correction is that in Genocide, he only really starts to change his mind about killing everyone once he realizes there's nothing holding Chara back from killing him as well. It's less mellowing out and more like a desperate plea.

That's wrong wrong. Before Flowey realizes how fucked he is, he rambles on about his plans for the future. Having experienced everything the underground offers and his best friend is back, he says the last thing he wants to do is finish their plan to break the barrier so monsters can learn just how horrible humanity is. The relevant dialogue starts after that.

Flowey's personality and motivations change drastically when they think Frisk is their long lost friend. In TP, Asriel abandons his plan to destroy the world because he wants to be with his BFF. In genocide, despite not having any souls, Flowey comes to the same conclusion. Flowey is emotionally dead inside specifically because of his guilt (he tried to kill himself over it), and believing their friend is alive helps bring him out of his numbness.

I'm suggesting that Asriel believes it's all his fault his BFF is dead, and he's not able to get over the past. His BFF actually being alive the whole time would sure help with that problem. Remember, as far as Asriel is aware, his best friend came up with a plan to save everyone, but because he was a coward and a crybaby, he messed it all up and got them killed. This is why he's a mental wreck, unable to be consoled by his parents and even attempted suicide.

There's a great conversation after abandoning genocide that shows how badly Asriel wants his friend to still be friends with him. He's totally obsessed even in the neutral runs. This is what he really wants.

His survivor's guilt is really bad, because deep down he kinda knows he made the right choice, but won't admit it to himself and instead opts to mentally punish himself for getting them both killed. THe neutral runs are already filtered through the trauma and kinda show how Chara has always been more on the violent side.

Them killing everyone is exactly what Flowey expects and when they abandon that, he really doesn't get it. He derailed his own morals as well, so seeing Chara pull back from that has to be fucking with his head a lot.

Flowey is unnable to feel empathy because of his lack of a Soul. The stuff with Chara is a separate issue. Both issues together are what caused Flowey to be so messed up. It's why even though he becomes Asriel again in TP, he's still messed up until Frisk SAVES him.
