If you're wanting to know what they are, they aren't a file extension but a folder with a titleID for the game and the game contents inside. MaiDumpTool installs that folder.

The DS has a "main" graphics engine with more VRAM and the 3D engine, and a "sub" graphics engine without that stuff. According to this document, bit 15 in this register controls whether the main engine's output is sent to the upper or lower screen.
Should be possible with a cheat code, but I've never written one so I can't say.
