It was never meant to be a war, even. It was literally a giant scam.

The Grail robo-calls the Throne of Heroes phone directory and when a hero picks up, it asks "Hello I am a Nigerian prince, do you want to fight for the one and only Holy Grail?"

When the hero answers yes, they are told the "rules" and summoned as a Servant. Except then the Master uses the Command Spells to instantly gib their Servant in order to feed them to the Grail. Surprise!

This went perfectly during the first war, but they discovered that three Servants weren't enough to get a decent wish out of the grail. The second war they invited a bunch of rando mages to make up the numbers, but the randos went rogue and everyone ended up wiping each other out. That's when shit broke down.

Thing is, its not just the Servants who get scammed. The families who invented the HGW are literally trying to take a shortcut to reach the Root which is the aim of every Mage in the Nasuverse. Marie Antoinette is a surprisingly interesting character due to the amount of lies and false quotes that have been associated with her due to French revolutionaries.
Saint George is a neat character with surprising reach. Muslims were afraid of him for quite some time and associate him with insanity.
